It is important to note the continuing stability of VACT’s core competition business and to recognise the hard work of a dedicated and effective volunteer workforce who service our clubs, State junior teams and other activities. Junior Development was identified as a strategic priority in 2007 and following a planning forum early in the year a number of initiatives were undertaken, including the commencement in May 2007 of a weekly junior competition targeted at high school and upper primary age participants. The structure and content of the State Junior team preparation program have continued to improve under the direction of a committed group of coaches and managers. In particular we are confident the alignment of technical preparation across age groups will assist in producing improved results in future national competition. In 2007 VACT entered teams in all but one division at National Junior Championships. The State League competition ran effectively during the reporting period with some growth in the number of teams competing in the league. Further development of our clubs has been identified as a key priority for the next period and some initial work has been undertaken to establish an understanding of the current level of organisational development of each of our clubs. It is imperative that the ACT Volleyball community is able to provide adequate opportunities for both new players and players aspiring to a higher level. Our clubs continue to be supported by a key group of volunteers that plays a critical role in keeping our sport vibrant. Our flagship event, the Good Neighbour Tournament, remained healthy in its 42nd year with 106 teams participating in the late November tournament. The tournament continues to attract entries from at least 4 states and remains the largest and most enduring of any club tournament in Australia. We are pleased to report a positive financial result for 2007-08 noting that ongoing financial viability of the association remains dependent on the stability of our competitions and the contributions of a large number of volunteers across a range of areas. VACT continues to enjoy the support of Sport & Recreation ACT who provide financial assistance to underpin our core operations. After 2 years with VACT Holly Richardson resigned the VACT General Manager role in August, with her efforts recognised through the awarding of the AVF Administrator of the Year Award. Alex Vallentine commenced as VACT General Manager in October and amongst other achievements to date has delivered a new image for VACT in the form of a vibrant modern logo. I would also like to thank the Board and VACT staff for their commitment during the year to improving the Volleyball experience on offer to the ACT community and to enhancing the profile and reach of Volleyball in the ACT. Phil Borgeaud President Volleyball ACT 7 TREASURER’S REPORT I am pleased to announce that for the financial year ending 30 June 2008, the ACT Volleyball Association recorded a profit of $40,536. Our financial report was again prepared by RSM Bird Cameron Chartered Accountants. The profit margin shows a healthy increase over the previous year’s outcome, which is in part due to good budgeting but is also attributable to an overall increase in team numbers within most of our competitions. Our grant income from Sport & Recreation ACT was again stable this year and an increase of teams competing in the Good Neighbour tournament has improved our final figures. The financial success of this past year owes a great deal to our General Manager, Alex Vallentine and I am expecting a similar if not better result next year. Gary Antognelli Vice President – Finance Volleyball ACT 8 GENERAL MANAGER’S REPORT Firstly I would like to thank the board, staff and Volleyball ACT community for their assistance and dedication to the sport since I took over the role of General Manager in October 2007. It was a hectic initiation period with the 42nd Good Neighbour tournament being held just a month after starting but it turned out the event was a major success with 106 teams from right across Australia competing and the Men’s Honours division in particular proving to be very strong. Good Neighbour continues to be a major source of operational revenue for VACT and as such all efforts need to be made to ensure the event continues to be well regarded and attended by the Australian volleyball community and also that the event continues being profitable. Our top level competitions continue to be successful, with both the VACT Cup and State League season attracting more team entries in 2008 than in 2007. Open League participation is down slightly while the Recreational Leagues continue to be highly consistent. We were very pleased to send a team in every division to the Australian Junior Volleyball Championships, held in Melbourne during July. It was a tough week of competition and we are hoping to improve performances at next year’s event. We also fielded 3 teams at the U15 Nationals in Albury, with the ACT Gold girl’s team in particular performing extremely well to finish 4th overall. VACT also sent 6 teams away to the National Junior Beach Championships and were very pleased with performance as all teams reached or passed their expected seeding for the event. The VACT office has undergone a full IT transformation during this period which has allowed the office and staff greater functionality and reliability which has improved communication and office effectiveness substantially. VACT was also pleased to release a new logo during the reporting period and it has proved to be hugely popular and well received by both the ACT and Australian volleyball communities. After a long period of service the outdated ‘Bird Logo’ was replaced by a vibrant and visually appealing modern logo. The Board of Volleyball ACT conducted a development forum in January to establish an achievable plan of action for 2008. The main outcomes from the forum included Club Development, Marketing, Communications and Junior Development. These outcomes were moulded into an action plan and work is being done in these areas to achieve VACT’s set goals. Our sub-committees continue to play an important role in providing advice and suggestions to management. As always the clubs forum and competitions committee continue to be the most active of our committees due to the vital role they play in ensuring that our competitions are appropriate to the needs of the members. Alex Vallentine General Manager 9 LEAGUES 10 LEAGUES ADMINISTRATOR REPORT I would like to start by extending my thanks to Megan Hughes, who did an excellent job in the Leagues Administrator role during my time overseas. A special thanks must also go to all court supervisors and referees, without whom our competitions could not operate, and to Bruce Fuda for his assistance in compiling the 2008 VACT Cup & State League draws. The 2007-08 period has been one of mixed results for Volleyball ACT competitions. State League has continued to build with a much healthier competition for the 2008 season. Open League Men’s Divisions One and Three remained strong, while Men’s Division Two and Women’s Division One along with some Recreational Leagues saw a decline in team numbers.
