The Beach Boys' idea of wedding the rhythm of rock'n'roll and the melodies of pop music was taken to its logical conclusion in Britain by the bands of the so- called "Mersey Sound". The most famous of them, the Beatles, became the object of the second great swindle of rock'n'roll. In 1963 "Beatlemania" hit Britain, and in 1964 it spread through the USA. They became even more famous than Presley, and sold records in quantities that had never been dreamed of before them. Presley had proven that there was a market for rock'n'roll in the USA. Countless imitators proved that a similar market also existed in Europe, but they had to twist and reshape the sound and the lyrics. Britain had a tradition of importing forgotten bluesmen from the USA, and became the center of the European recording industry. European rock'n'roll was less interested in innuendos, more interested in dancing, and obliged to merge with the strong pop tradition.

    SELLING THE SIXTIES Was pirate radio in the sixties a non-stop psychedelic party – an offshore discothèque that never closed? Or was there more to it than hip radicalism and floating jukeboxes? From the mavericks in the Kings Road and the clubs ofSohotothemultinationaladvertisers andbigbusiness boardrooms Selling the Sixties examines the boom of pirate broadcasting in Britain. Using two contrasting models of unauthorized broadcasting, Radios Caroline and London, Robert Chapman situates offshore radio in its social and political context. In doing so, he challenges many of the myths which have grown up around the phenomenon. The pirates’ own story is framed within an examination of commercial precedents in Europe and America, the BBC’s initial reluctance to embrace pop culture, and the Corporation’s eventual assimilation of pirate programming into its own pop service, Radio One. Selling the Sixties utilizes previously unseen evidence from the pirates’ own archives, revealing interviews with those directly involved, and rare audio material from the period. This fascinating look at the relationship between unauthorized broadcasting and the growth of pop culture will appeal not only to students of communications, mass media, and cultural studies but to all those with an enthusiasm for radio history, pop, and the sixties.     Syllabus for Women in Rock: From the 1950s to the 1980s Instructor: Richie Unterberger, [email protected] OLLI Berkeley Week One: Women in Rock: The Early Years and The Girl Groups In the 1950s, rhythm and blues singers like Ruth Brown and LaVern Baker have some of the first rock’n’roll hits; Wanda Jackson and the Collins Kids are top rockabilly acts; and Brenda Lee becomes the first woman rock superstar. As New York’s Brill Building becomes established as the top place for rock publishers, women like Carole King, Cynthia Weil, and Ellie Greenwich become some of pop-rock’s most successful songwriters. Girl groups like the Shirelles, the Crystals, the Ronettes, the Chiffons, and the Cookies have numerous hits in the early 1960s, forming one of the major trends in rock of the period. In the early 1960s, some of the most R&B-oriented girl groups become some of the first soul stars, especially for Motown Records, with the Marvelettes, Martha & the Vandellas, the Supremes, and Mary Wells. Week Two: Women in Soul and British Rock Women soul singers emerge throughout the country, some of them more pop-oriented (Maxine Brown, Dionne Warwick), some of them earthier (Carla Thomas, Irma Thomas, Etta James). Aretha Franklin is anointed the Queen of Soul after moving to Atlantic Records and adopting a tougher, more spiritual sound. Other women soul singers with a forceful style emerge and increase in popularity, like Gladys Knight, Nina Simone, and the Staple Singers. Although all-male guitar bands dominate the British Invasion, a good number of women singers also make an impact both in their native UK and in the US.

As a result, these recordings differ in more ways than simply length, because there are “long song” characteristics that distinguish this music. In order to better discuss these characteristics, it was important to develop a method for visually depicting songs in a manner that clearly outlines each groove. These “groove analyses” are used to discuss each piece of music in detail. As a result, groove is a primary point of discussion throughout this study, because most long song characteristics are directly linked to this quality within music. This type of analysis is explained in detail, and afterwards, it is utilized throughout much of the dissertation. It is also hypothetically possible that the structures and techniques in question can impact the listener’s perception of time when used outside of the context of a long song. A simple experiment was run in order to better understand how these concepts influence a person’s sense of duration, and the results were promising and demonstrated trends that merit further research.

SPECIAL DANCES: Please note that we will need to have your special dance requests, (i.e. First Dance, Father/Daughter Dance, etc) FOUR WEEKS prior to your event so that we can confirm that the band will be able to perform the song(s) and so that we have time to locate sheet music and audio. In cases where sheet music is not available or an arrangement for the full band is needed, this gives us time to properly prepare the music. The JB Project song list is divided into two categories: HIGH ROTATION SONGS & LOW ROTATION SONGS. Requests for LOW ROTATION SONGS (not performed regularly) need to be made FOUR WEEKS in advance to give the band time to review. Clients are not obligated to send in a list of general song requests. Many of our clients ask that the band just react to whatever their guests are responding to on the dance floor. Our clients that do provide us with song requests do so in varying degrees. Most clients give us a handful of songs they want played and avoided.     Rick Derringer Young guitar great, vocalist and entertainer Rick Derringer was just 17 when his band The McCoys TM recorded the No.1 hit "Hang On Sloopy" in the summer of 1965, knocking "Yesterday" by The Beatles out of the top spot. The McCoys had enjoyed four years of successful touring, when Rick merged his talents with Johnny Winter in 1969 forming Johnny Winter And ( And referring to The McCoys ). Rick was the only producer of all gold and platinum Winter Brothers recordings. In '71 Rick was featured on three records, "Johnny Winter And", "Johnny Winter And-Live" and "Edgar Winter's White Trash". "And" featured the first version of Derringer's "Rock and Roll Hoochie Koo" which was also released as a single, then selected again for "And - Live". Eventually, the busy Derringer joined Edgar Winter's White Trash full-time and produced the gold LP, "Roadwork". Derringer's solo album, All American Boy was released in '73 with the now already popular "Rock and Roll, Hoochie Koo ", this time as a 'hit' single. Rick was writer/producer of Johnny Winter's Still Alive and Well album and player/producer of the hit album, They Only Come Out At Night . The latter featured the No. 1, Grammy nominated monster hit, "Frankenstein" and "Free Ride". In 1976 Rick created the Derringer Band. He released four albums and in '83 returned to his solo career with the LP, Good Dirty Fun . Throughout the 70's and 80's the popular Derringer appeared on numerous albums with artists Alice Cooper, Richie Havens, Todd Rundgren and Steely Dan.
