The band's halftime show that day honored the arts, and they formed a ballerina while playing Tchaikovsky's Waltz of the Flowers before dancing Watusi-style and playing Hang on Sloopy. Director Charles Charlie Spohn said the juxtaposition would amuse the crowds at Ohio Stadium without realizing that it would become a tradition at Ohio State. The Legendary Vibrations sing My Girl SloopyCarl Fisher, right, was the lead singer of The Vibrations when she recorded the rhythm and blues song My Girl Sloopy for Atlantic Records in 1964. He played this song 50 years later with The Legendary Vibrations in Los Angeles, California in November 2014. John Tatgenhorst '70 was honored by the Ohio State University Marching Band on September 13, 2014. Tatgenhorst was a percussion student when he arranged the 1965 hit Hang on Sloopy by The McCoys for the marching band. He never expected it to be a tradition at Ohio State that would last more than 50 years. Courtesy of Ohio State University Marching Band. The Beach Boys' idea of wedding the rhythm of rock'n'roll and the melodies of pop music was taken to its logical conclusion in Britain by the bands of the so- called "Mersey Sound". The most famous of them, the Beatles, became the object of the second great swindle of rock'n'roll. In 1963 "Beatlemania" hit Britain, and in 1964 it spread through the USA. They became even more famous than Presley, and sold records in quantities that had never been dreamed of before them. Presley had proven that there was a market for rock'n'roll in the USA. Countless imitators proved that a similar market also existed in Europe, but they had to twist and reshape the sound and the lyrics. Britain had a tradition of importing forgotten bluesmen from the USA, and became the center of the European recording industry. European rock'n'roll was less interested in innuendos, more interested in dancing, and obliged to merge with the strong pop tradition.

  • The Pirates and Pop Music Radio
SELLING THE SIXTIES Was pirate radio in the sixties a non-stop psychedelic party – an offshore discothèque that never closed? Or was there more to it than hip radicalism and floating jukeboxes? From the mavericks in the Kings Road and the clubs ofSohotothemultinationaladvertisers andbigbusiness boardrooms Selling the Sixties examines the boom of pirate broadcasting in Britain. Using two contrasting models of unauthorized broadcasting, Radios Caroline and London, Robert Chapman situates offshore radio in its social and political context. In doing so, he challenges many of the myths which have grown up around the phenomenon. The pirates’ own story is framed within an examination of commercial precedents in Europe and America, the BBC’s initial reluctance to embrace pop culture, and the Corporation’s eventual assimilation of pirate programming into its own pop service, Radio One. Selling the Sixties utilizes previously unseen evidence from the pirates’ own archives, revealing interviews with those directly involved, and rare audio material from the period. This fascinating look at the relationship between unauthorized broadcasting and the growth of pop culture will appeal not only to students of communications, mass media, and cultural studies but to all those with an enthusiasm for radio history, pop, and the sixties. Robert Chapman’s broadcasting experience includes BBC local radio in Bristol and Northampton. He has also contributed archive material to Radios One and Four. He is currently Lecturer and Researcher in the Department of Performing Arts and Media Studies at Salford College of Technology. Professor Werner Sollors Jack Hamilton Professor Carol J. Oja Rubber Souls: Rock and Roll and the Racial Imagination Abstract This dissertation explores the interplay of popular music and racial thought in the 1960s, and asks how, when, and why rock and roll music “became white.” By Jimi Hendrix’s death in 1970 the idea of a black man playing electric lead guitar was considered literally remarkable in ways it had not been for Chuck Berry only ten years earlier: employing an interdisciplinary combination of archival research, musical analysis, and critical race theory, this project explains how this happened, and in doing so tells two stories simultaneously.

  • Women in Rock OLLI Berkeley Course Material
Syllabus for Women in Rock: From the 1950s to the 1980s Instructor: Richie Unterberger, [email protected] OLLI Berkeley Week One: Women in Rock: The Early Years and The Girl Groups In the 1950s, rhythm and blues singers like Ruth Brown and LaVern Baker have some of the first rock’n’roll hits; Wanda Jackson and the Collins Kids are top rockabilly acts; and Brenda Lee becomes the first woman rock superstar. As New York’s Brill Building becomes established as the top place for rock publishers, women like Carole King, Cynthia Weil, and Ellie Greenwich become some of pop-rock’s most successful songwriters. Girl groups like the Shirelles, the Crystals, the Ronettes, the Chiffons, and the Cookies have numerous hits in the early 1960s, forming one of the major trends in rock of the period. In the early 1960s, some of the most R&B-oriented girl groups become some of the first soul stars, especially for Motown Records, with the Marvelettes, Martha & the Vandellas, the Supremes, and Mary Wells. Week Two: Women in Soul and British Rock Women soul singers emerge throughout the country, some of them more pop-oriented (Maxine Brown, Dionne Warwick), some of them earthier (Carla Thomas, Irma Thomas, Etta James). Aretha Franklin is anointed the Queen of Soul after moving to Atlantic Records and adopting a tougher, more spiritual sound. Other women soul singers with a forceful style emerge and increase in popularity, like Gladys Knight, Nina Simone, and the Staple Singers. Although all-male guitar bands dominate the British Invasion, a good number of women singers also make an impact both in their native UK and in the US.
