The entire Gainesville music scene was built around songs: Top Forty songs on the radio, songs on albums, original songs performed on stage by bands and other musical ensembles. The late sixties was a golden age of rock and pop music and the rise of the rock band as a musical entity. As the counterculture marched for equal rights and against the war in Vietnam, a sonic revolution was occurring in the recording studio and on the concert stage. New sounds were being created through multitrack recording techniques, and record producers such as Phil Spector and George Martin became integral parts of the creative process. Musicians expanded their sonic palette by experimenting with the sounds of sitar, and through sound-modifying electronic ef- fects such as the wah-wah pedal, fuzz tone, and the Echoplex tape-de- lay unit, as well as a variety of new electronic keyboard instruments and synthesizers. The sound of every musical instrument contributed toward the overall sound of a performance or recording, and bands were begin- ning to expand beyond the core of drums, bass, and a couple guitars.

  • Black Tie Dinner Announces Stellar Lineup for Nov. 14 Event
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE PRESS CONTACT: 972-865-2239, Ext. 29 [email protected] Interviews and photographs available. BLACK TIE DINNER ANNOUNCES STELLAR LINEUP FOR NOV. 14 EVENT MARRIAGE EQUALITY PLAINTIFF TO SPEAK; TREVOR PROJECT, MELISSA GROVE TO RECEIVE HONORS; TOP-NOTCH ENTERTAINERS WILL IGNITE THE STAGE DALLAS (Aug. 6, 2015) – The plaintiff in the historic U.S. Supreme Court marriage equality case will be one of this year’s distinguished guest speaker at the 34th annual Black Tie Dinner, organizers announced this evening. The dinner gala will be held Nov. 14 at the Sheraton Dallas. The theme for this year’s dinner is “IGNITE!” In June 2013, Jim Obergefell and John Arthur decided to get married to obtain legal federal recognition of their relationship. They married in Maryland. After learning that their state of residence, Ohio, would not recognize their marriage license, they filed a lawsuit, which eventually made its way to the U.S. Supreme Court. Decided on June 26, 2015, the case required all states to issue marriage licenses to same- sex couples and to recognize same-sex marriages validly performed in other jurisdictions. The 5-4 vote legalized same-sex marriage throughout the United States. “As plaintiff in this historic case, Jim Obergefell will forever be known for standing up to protect the marriage equality of all Americans,” said Black Tie Dinner Co-chair John Lawrimore. “Obergefell is one of so, so many people in our community who ignite passion, ignite community and ignite equality.” The Black Tie Dinner Board of Directors announced other program highlights, and promised more to come.

The Beach Boys' idea of wedding the rhythm of rock'n'roll and the melodies of pop music was taken to its logical conclusion in Britain by the bands of the so- called "Mersey Sound". The most famous of them, the Beatles, became the object of the second great swindle of rock'n'roll. In 1963 "Beatlemania" hit Britain, and in 1964 it spread through the USA. They became even more famous than Presley, and sold records in quantities that had never been dreamed of before them. Presley had proven that there was a market for rock'n'roll in the USA. Countless imitators proved that a similar market also existed in Europe, but they had to twist and reshape the sound and the lyrics. Britain had a tradition of importing forgotten bluesmen from the USA, and became the center of the European recording industry. European rock'n'roll was less interested in innuendos, more interested in dancing, and obliged to merge with the strong pop tradition.

  • “The Stories Behind the Songs”
“The Stories Behind The Songs” John Henderson The Stories Behind The Songs A compilation of “inside stories” behind classic country hits and the artists associated with them John Debbie & John By John Henderson (Arrangement by Debbie Henderson) A fascinating and entertaining look at the life and recording efforts of some of country music’s most talented singers and songwriters 1 Author’s Note My background in country music started before I even reached grade school. I was four years old when my uncle, Jack Henderson, the program director of 50,000 watt KCUL-AM in Fort Worth/Dallas, came to visit my family in 1959. He brought me around one hundred and fifty 45 RPM records from his station (duplicate copies that they no longer needed) and a small record player that played only 45s (not albums). I played those records day and night, completely wore them out. From that point, I wanted to be a disc jockey. But instead of going for the usual “comedic” approach most DJs took, I tried to be more informative by dropping in tidbits of a song’s background, something that always fascinated me. Originally with my “Classic Country Music Stories” site on Facebook (which is still going strong), and now with this book, I can tell the whole story, something that time restraints on radio wouldn’t allow. I began deejaying as a career at the age of sixteen in 1971, most notably at Nashville’s WENO-AM and WKDA- AM, Lakeland, Florida’s WPCV-FM (past winner of the “Radio Station of the Year” award from the Country Music Association), and Springfield, Missouri’s KTTS AM & FM and KWTO-AM, but with syndication and automation which overwhelmed radio some twenty-five years ago, my final DJ position ended in 1992.
