BILLBOARD COUNTRY UPDATE JUNE 24, 2019 | PAGE 2 OF 19 Plummeting album sales have reduced the mechanical royalties for non-hits, and streaming partners pay artists bigger royalties than they do writers. Meanwhile, recording has become less expensive while the advent of self-run websites, social media and streaming platforms provide a source for at least moderate exposure for the songwriter/artist, who can then tour modestly. “There’s a lot more performing going on and picking up gigs and taking [corporate] industrials,” says Hummon. “There are side projects, and there’s a boutique industry of songwriters who teach in camps.” The Music City Hit-Makers album — which also features Hillary Lindsey (“Girl Crush”), Chris DeStefano (“From the Ground Up”) and Rivers Rutherford (“When I Get Where I’m Going”) — is an extension of one of those loosely built tour packages. Luke Combs (center) checked in with WYRK Buffalo, N.Y., staff The shows (organized by Charles Dixon, who plays viola in the Nashville Symphony) when he played the station’s Toyota Taste of Country concert typically feature a handful of songwriters performing their established hits with a at Sahlen Field on June 14. Chris Crowley. Not so unique, however, is fans reminding the behind-the-scenes songwriter at the end of a show that they could have been a full-time, front-of-stage performer had the cards fallen differently in their careers. “I don’t know that I’ve ever played a Bluebird [Café] show where somebody didn’t come up to me afterward and [ask], ‘Why aren’t you singing your songs?’ ” says James, who has a deep appreciation for the way his life turned out. “That wasn’t meant to be for me,” he reasons. “I get to stay home, and I’ve gotten to raise a family and not be on the road all the time. There’s a lot of blessings to not being that guy out there.” That said, artists and their advisers have the final say in the material they record, which creates some frustration for songwriters, most of whom pursue their craft hoping that their compositions will make a difference in the world in addition to Former Country Radio Broadcasters executive director Bill providing them an income. Hemby, for example, has more sympathy when an artist declines to pursue a promising idea during a co-writing appointment. “I’m much more objective when I’m writing with somebody,” she says. “I’m trying to figure out, ‘OK, is this the direction they’re going toward right now?’ ’Cause that’s what I would want someone to help me figure out.” Ultimately, developing an artistic path on top of a songwriting career has both economic and creative benefits. Just 50 profitable shows a year in clubs and small theaters provides a solid income stream. More importantly, says James, connecting with an audience reinvigorates the songwriting muse. “When you’re 15 years old and you pick up a guitar, you don’t dream of sitting in a room writing a song with two other people and never playing that song again,” he says. “If it ends up being a hit, that’s great, but the next day, you’re doing the same Aaron Watson (center) visited KILT Houston as his Red Bandana thing over and over again. • Narrative Representations of Gender and Genre Through Lyric, Music, Image, and Staging in Carrie Underwood’S Blown Away Tour
COUNTRY CULTURE AND CROSSOVER: Narrative Representations of Gender and Genre Through Lyric, Music, Image, and Staging in Carrie Underwood’s Blown Away Tour Krisandra Ivings A Thesis Presented In Partial Fulfillment of the Requirement for the Degree Master of Arts in Music with Specialization in Women’s Studies University of Ottawa © Krisandra Ivings, Ottawa, Canada, 2016 Abstract This thesis examines the complex and multi-dimensional narratives presented in the work of mainstream female country artist Carrie Underwood, and how her blending of musical genres (pop, rock, and country) affects the narratives pertaining to gender and sexuality that are told through her musical texts. I interrogate the relationships between and among the domains of music, lyrics, images, and staging in Underwood’s live performances (Blown Away Tour: Live DVD) and related music videos in order to identify how these gendered narratives relate to genre, and more specifically, where these performances and videos adhere to, expand on, or break from country music tropes and traditions. Adopting an interlocking theoretical approach grounded in genre theory, gender theory, narrative theory in the context of popular music, and happiness theory, I examine how, as a female artist in the country music industry, Underwood uses genre-blending to construct complex gendered narratives in her musical texts. Ultimately, I find that in her Blown Away Tour: Live DVD, Underwood uses diverse narrative strategies, sometimes drawing on country tropes, to engage techniques and stylistic influences of several pop and rock styles, and in doing so explores the gender norms of those genres. ii Acknowledgements A great number of people have supported this thesis behind the scenes, whether financially, academically, or emotionally.

  • THE MUSICAL FEATURES of 2015'S TOP-RANKED COUNTRY SONGS
THE MUSICAL FEATURES OF 2015’s TOP-RANKED COUNTRY SONGS By Mason Taylor Allen Senior Honors Thesis Department of Music University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill April 22, 2016 Approved: Dr. Jocelyn R. Neal, Thesis Advisor Dr. Allen Anderson, Reader Dr. Andrea Bohlman, Reader © 2016 Mason Taylor Allen ALL RIGHTS RESERVED ii ABSTRACT Mason Taylor Allen: The Musical Features of 2015’s Top-Ranked Country Songs Under the direction of Dr. Jocelyn R. Neal The 2015 top-ten country songs analyzed in this study are characterized by the various formats of their song form, harmonies, and lyrics. This thesis presents a comprehensive study of the structure and narratives in sixty-seven songs that summarizes the distinctive features within those domains of contemporary commercial country music. A detailed description of the norm along with identifiable trends emerges. The song form that features most prominently in this repertory includes a verse-chorus-bridge form with three iterations of the chorus, an intro and outro section, and instrumental sections immediately following each chorus. The top-ten country songs have varying degrees of departure from this typical model. Primary features of the harmonies of these top songs include the frequent use of a double-tonic complex, the absence of a 5-1 authentic cadence, the same chord progression throughout the verse, chorus, and bridge, and the use of only two chords throughout the song. Lyrical analyses show that 2015 songs are continuing the traditional themes about romantic attraction, love, heartache, good times and partying, home, family, nostalgia, religion, and inspiration, within the context of small-town country life that this genre has used for years.

  • Multimillion-Selling Singer Crystal Gayle Has Performed Songs from a Wide Variety of Genres During Her Award-Studded Career, B
MultiMillion-selling singer Crystal Gayle has performed songs from a wide variety of genres during her award-studded career, but she has never devoted an album to classic country music. Until now. You Don’t Know Me is a collection that finds the acclaimed stylist exploring the songs of such country legends as George Jones, Patsy Cline, Buck Owens and Eddy Arnold. The album might come as a surprise to those who associate Crystal with an uptown sound that made her a star on both country and adult-contemporary pop charts. But she has known this repertoire of hardcore country standards all her life. “This wasn’t a stretch at all,” says Crystal. “These are songs I grew up singing. I’ve been wanting to do this for a long time. “The songs on this album aren’t songs I sing in my concerts until recently. But they are very much a part of my history.” Each of the selections was chosen because it played a role in her musical development. Two of them point to the importance that her family had in bringing her to fame. You Don’t Know Me contains the first recorded trio vocal performance by Crystal with her singing sisters Loretta Lynn and Peggy Sue. It is their version of Dolly Parton’s “Put It Off Until Tomorrow.” “You Never Were Mine” comes from the pen of her older brother, Jay Lee Webb (1937-1996). The two were always close. Jay Lee was the oldest brother still living with the family when their father passed away.

  • MARTY STUART TRAVELS from SATURDAY NIGHT to SUNDAY MORNING by Mario Tarradell
MARTY STUART TRAVELS FROM SATURDAY NIGHT TO SUNDAY MORNING By Mario Tarradell Country music singer, songwriter, guitarist, TV show host and historian continues to mine the rich treasures of American roots music Marty Stuart spent nine years journeying from Saturday night into Sunday morning. That’s no hyperbole. The country singer, songwriter, guitarist, TV show host and noted historian took nearly a decade to craft his expansive and ambitious double-album, Saturday Night/Sunday Morning. The just-released effort not only combines Stuart’s predilection for all things American roots music – country, rock ‘n’ roll, R&B, gospel and bluegrass – but it also tells a story. “I wanted it to flow as a continuation, as an evolution,” says Stuart, 56, by phone from his home in Nashville. “We toured all the while making this record. The more we developed the idea, the more songs started piling up.” As the title suggests, Saturday Night/Sunday Morning captures the dichotomous reality of raising hell and seeking heaven. It’s about night and day, dark and light; the balancing act of feeding the flesh and nourishing the soul. The Saturday Night disc is all about the honky-tonk, while the Sunday Morning CD is all about the church. Stuart calls it “spiritual warfare,” noting that it’s a fine line we all struggle with in our lives. The gospel harmonies on the Sunday Morning side are particularly impressive, recalling the best of the Oak Ridge Boys and the Staple Singers. Stuart and his longtime band, the Fabulous Superlatives, found common ground as people in that musical world of Southern gospel.
