The Interplay of Authority, Masculinity, and Signification in the “Grunge Killed Glam Metal” Narrative by Holly Johnson A thesis submitted to the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Affairs in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts in Music and Culture Carleton University Ottawa, Ontario © 2014, Holly Johnson ii Abstract This thesis will deconstruct the "grunge killed '80s metal” narrative, to reveal the idealization by certain critics and musicians of that which is deemed to be authentic, honest, and natural subculture. The central theme is an analysis of the conflicting masculinities of glam metal and grunge music, and how these gender roles are developed and reproduced. I will also demonstrate how, although the idealized authentic subculture is positioned in opposition to the mainstream, it does not in actuality exist outside of the system of commercialism. The problematic nature of this idealization will be examined with regard to the layers of complexity involved in popular rock music genre evolution, involving the inevitable progression from a subculture to the mainstream that occurred with both glam metal and grunge. I will illustrate the ways in which the process of signification functions within rock music to construct masculinities and within subcultures to negotiate authenticity. iii Acknowledgements I would like to thank firstly my academic advisor Dr. William Echard for his continued patience with me during the thesis writing process and for his invaluable guidance. Lemmy Kilmister: Dogged Insolence in the Face of Mounting Opposition to the Contrary www.slickstermagazine.com /lemmy-kilmister-dogged-insolence-face-mounting-opposition-contrary/ Joe Mitchell In 2013, at the age of 67, rock icon Lemmy Kilmister, best known for his work as the leader of thrash metal progenitors, Motörhead, had a cardioverter defibrillator implanted in his chest. Though his notorious drug usage had been restricted since the early 90s when he began suffering from diabetes and hypertension, he refused to completely give up drinking and smoking after the procedure. It did make him reduce his alcohol intake. He finally gave up his “daily bottle of Jack Daniel’s” habit that he’d had since the mid-70s. Still, he readily admitted he had could not completely give up alcohol and cigarettes . He called this refusal, “Dogged insolence in the face of mounting opposition to the contrary.” That phrase may well distill not only Kilmister’s life, but the entire philosophy of Rock ‘n’ Roll as well. More than two years later, just days after being diagnosed with an aggressive form of cancer, Kilmister died at about 4:00 p.m. Pacific Time in his two- bedroom apartment not far from his favorite hang-out, the Rainbow Bar & Grill, on Sunset Boulevard, where he was often enthralled in the playing of a particular video game. When Kilmister became too ill to leave his apartment, the owners of the Rainbow had the game moved to his home so he could continue to play it. It is said that Kilmister died sitting upright in a stool in front of the machine. -

Blue Cheer There’s a worn leather wallet in the back of my top dresser drawer. It’s long and thin, calf skin soft and black, with tiny tucks in the leather where the snap on the long edge holds it closed. I love this wallet with its plaid interior, its fine stitching that held until the leather itself started to tear. Finally, too worn to be used, it was relegated to hold something more important: my last tab of Ludiomil. A tab of Ludiomil is not something one saves for a rainy day. It wouldn’t do anything on its own, like a faded hit of acid might, a bit of shriveled mushroom, a nip bottle res- cued from some uncertain vacation. It needs at least thirteen others of its kind to be effective, doled out steadily one per day until two weeks later, swallowing the fourteenth tab, one might feel something a little different; More likely, one would sense an absence of a familiar feeling. Day Fourteen: not so sure about slashing my wrists today. This tiny hard oval of robin’s egg blue is a placeholder, a miniscule iconic bombshell. Just looking at it brings a whole world home to roost. With over 4,000 legitimate variations and an untold number of underground permutations, the ability of pharmaceuticals to provoke a steamer trunk-full of associations, opinions, and emotions, is new only in its industrial and technicolor nature. Drugs have been around. These new drugs, though, bring a cartoonish sheen to the shriveled earthtones of innumerable entheogenic plants and animals. -

Hawkwind More Serious Now NME - 27 November 1971 Nik Turner: "When Silver Machine was a hit record, when we were getting success with big gigs, it was quite exciting... And then it stopped because our drummer was taking all his clothes off." Right now, Hawkwind (at Ewell Tech on Saturday and Hammersmith Town Hall on Thursday, Dec. 2) are probably more involved in their music than ever before. Said Nik Turner (alto sax): "Apart from our bass player, none of us had ever been in a group before. When we started it was just a loon. It was great just to be in a band. Now, after two years it doesn't seem to be a flash in the pan and we're taking the music more seriously. "Personally I'm surprised we've got so far., I never thought our music would appeal to anybody simply because we've never pandered to public taste never compromised and just played exactly what we wanted., By a happy accident people seem to be digging it... And the band has good reason to be satisfied with progress so far. A community band in the true sense of the word, Hawkwind have taken experimental music to its' outer limits and combined sound, colour and lights perhaps more effectively than any other band currently working in Britain. "Originally we just wanted to freak people out," said Dave Brock (guitar). "We used to portray different trips -you know, acid trips- and because of our own experiences knew exactly how to get through to people. Although we've got away from that, we still seem to freak people out. -

Hawkwind, 1973 Transcription of excerpts from interviews with David Roberts, Bruce Enzer and Will Stone (2018) David: It was 1973, I was 14 in the September. And it was to go and see Hawkwind, they were doing what they called The Space Ritual Tour. So Lemmy was still playing bass with them then. Had a hit single with Silver Machine. So I'd seen them on Top of the Pops and really wanted to see the band. Ian, who is a year older than me said, “We can go David, I’ll get some tickets.” And I remember he said, “We’ll go to the Beauchamp Hotel for a drink first.” Now I was only 14, so not only was it my first gig, but it was my first under age drink really. I remember him going up to the bar and buying me a bottle of Newcastle Brown in the Beauchamp Hotel. And I remember everybody outside of the Winter Gardens, there was a big, what I remember to be a very large crowd outside the Winter Gardens waiting for the doors to open. And that was a feature of going to the Winter Gardens then, was people would get there before the doors opened and would be waiting outside. And I remember feeling very excited about this, and a little scared. I then remember going in the hall and everybody, everybody sat down on the floor. It's effectively a dance hall, there were no seats in there, and everybody sat cross legged on the floor. And we got quite close up to the front. -

The Message serves the areas of and is the paper of record for Chester, Londonderry, Ludlow, Rockingham, Springfield, West River Valley and Weston, Vermont. Plastic Crimewave Sound Review by Joe Milliken The Chicago-based Plastic Crimewave Sound is a band that is hard to describe. How about; a spaced out, nightmarish, psychedelic punk band. Of course that does not nearly begin to describe the scope of this band, but you get the idea. With the CD rerelease of No Wonderland, originally recorded as a concept, doublealbum on Eclipse Records and since out of print, the indie label Prophase offers this mind bending concoction of roaring psychedelic punk jams, heavy pulsating rhythms, sweeping minimalist soundscapes, fuzz tone, acoustic guitars and orchestral strings, all offset by some eerily poetic lyrics. An 18track concept piece, No Wonderland weaves in and out of all these different textures, taking the listener on a surreal, exploratory, almost frightening at times journey through this fuzz drenched, multifaceted rock sound. Imagine the Syd Barrett led Floyd submerging themselves into a modern, industrialized format. If it is hard to wrap your imagination around these descriptions, just imagine listening to the music. For this is not a collection of songs for the faint of heart or those looking to create some nice background music for a social gathering. No, Plastic Crimewave Sound is some serious music for a serious music fan, as this fivepiece, self proclaimed ³space punk² band rages through 70 minutes of stunning rock virtuosity reminiscent of classic 1970¹s prog rockers (the aforementioned) Pink Floyd, Hawkwind, Tangerine Dream and Pink Fairies.
