  • I INTRODUCTION Moldavia, the Smallest Republic in the Soviet Union, Has Been a Territorial Football Between Romania and Russia
INTRODUCTION Moldavia, the smallest republic in the Soviet Union, has been a territorial football between Romania and Russia for well over 100 years. Like the Baltic republics, it fell within the Soviet sphere of influence under the l939 Molotov-Ribbentrop pact, and there is reason to believe that some Moldavians may now wish to follow the lead of the Baltic republics in pressing for secession from the USSR. The 64 percent of the republic's population that is ethnic Moldavian has its cultural heart in Romania and, at the very least, seeks freer contacts with Romanians across their common frontier. In the past 18 months Moldavian political and social life has been transformed. Fledgling independent groups have developed into major new political movements, such as the Moldavian Popular Front with a membership of between 700,000 and one million. Other independent groups include the Alexe Mateevici Club which led the successful drive to establish Moldavian as the official language of the republic, the Moldavian Democratic Movement aimed at establishing a state that adheres to the rule of law, the Moldavian Green Movement which works to increase public awareness of ecological issues, and others. Groups of citizens in late l988 began braving the wrath of the local authorities by organizing small public protests. By March l989 the rallies had grown to include as many as 80,000 demonstrators who were calling, among other things, for the i removal of Moldavia's Party leaders. Both the protestors and the Moldavian government often turned to violence. The most egregious such instances of reciprocal violence occurred in l989 on February 12 and 26, March 12 and November 7.

  • The Reign, Culture and Legacy of Ştefan Cel Mare, Voivode of Moldova: a Case Study of Ethnosymbolism in the Romanian Societies
The reign, culture and legacy of Ştefan cel Mare, voivode of Moldova: a case study of ethnosymbolism in the Romanian societies Jonathan Eagles Thesis submitted for the degree of PhD Institute of Archaeology University College London 2011 Volume 1 ABSTRACT The reign, culture and legacy of Ştefan cel Mare, voivode of Moldova: a case study of ethnosymbolism in the Romanian societies This thesis seeks to explain the nature and strength of the latter-day status of Ştefan cel Mare in the republics of Romania and Moldova, and the history of his legacy. The regime and posthumous career of Ştefan cel Mare is examined through studies of history, politics and archaeology, set within the conceptual approach to nationalism that is known as “ethnosymbolism”. At the heart of this thesis lie the questions why does Ştefan cel Mare play a key role as a national symbol and how does this work in practice? These questions are addressed within an ethnosymbolist framework, which allows for the ethnosymbolist approach itself to be subjected to a critical study. There is a lacuna in many ethnosymbolist works, a space for a more detailed consideration of the place of archaeology in the development of nationalism. This thesis contends that the results of archaeological research can be included in a rounded ethnosymbolist study. First, the history of archaeological sites and monuments may contribute to understanding the way in which historically attested cultural symbols are adopted by communities over time. Secondly, if studied carefully, archaeological evidence may have the potential to trace the evolution of identity characteristics, in line with ethnosymbolism’s attempt to account for the formation of national identity in the pre- modern era.

The emphasis on its popular and national character transformed the Resistance into the struggle of the whole country to rid Italy of the German invaders and the small number of Italian fascists who remained their allies, but in ways that took no account of the complexity of people’s reactions and the different ways in which Italians experienced the years immediately after the fall of fascism. In the last decade, however, numerous accounts have been published that contradict the images of the Resistance that for 30 years have constituted the ‘official’ memory of the Italian Republic. As a result, the Resistance offers a classic example of the ‘public use of history’, in which historical interpretation has served primarily to justify party political, instutitional and idelogical ends.

  • Romania: State Sponsored Hate Speech Against
PC.SHDM.NGO/6/16 OSCE SUPPLEMENTARY HUMAN 14 April 2016 DIMENSION MEETING. APRIL 2016 ROMANIA: STATESPONSORED HATEENGLISH only SPEECH AGAINST MOLDOVANS AND THE REPUBLIC OF MOLDOVA In March 2016 Iulian Chifu, former national security adviser to Romanian President Traian Basescu, published a ‘road map’ for the transition of the Republic of Moldova to Romanian jurisdiction and a forced relocation of Transnistria’s population. This document is just one of numerous examples of the Romanian officials’ hate speech against ethnic Moldovans and the Republic of Moldova. Major ideas of the official Romanian ideology include denying ethnic Moldovans and the Republic of Moldova the very right of independent existence, deliberate violation of the rights of the Moldovan ethnic minority in Romania and removing any references to an independent Moldovan ethnos from all official statements. There are an estimated 5 to 10 million ethnic Moldovans residing in Romania1. However, they were denied a possibility to indicate their ethnic origin as ‘Moldovans’ in the questionnaires which they filled out during the population census. At the same time any resident of Romania was free to choose among a hundred other ethnic origins, including rare ethnic groups such as Jordanians, Cypriots and Japanese. Romanian RϒFLDOYLHZ 1R0ROGRYDQV 0LOOLRQVRI0ROGRYDQV 1 According to the Wikipedia article on Moldovans, there are 4.7 million Moldovans in Romania, while in his interview to the Moldpres agency, V.Voronin — President of Moldova — estimated the number of Moldovans residing in Romania at 10 million. A policy aimed at infringing the rights of the Moldovan ethnic minority in Romania is manifested in repressions against civil society organizations.

  • Competing Identities the Construction of National Identity in the Republic of Moldova
COMPETING IDENTITIES THE CONSTRUCTION OF NATIONAL IDENTITY IN THE REPUBLIC OF MOLDOVA Valentin Florin Ion “A dissertation submitted to the faculty of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts in the Department of Russian and East European Studies.” Chapel Hill 2013 Approved by: Robert M. Jenkins Graeme Robertson Peter Sherwood ©2013 Valentin Florin Ion ALL RIGHTS RESERVED ii Abstract VALENTIN FLORIN ION: Competing Identities The Construction of National Identity in the Borderland Moldova (Under the direction of Robert M. Jenkins) This paper discusses the competing processes for national identity construction in the Republic of Moldova between a Moldovan national identity and a Romanian national identity. The paper follows three main theories of national identity construction coined by Keith Darden, David Laitin and Rogers Brubaker and surveys the implementation of mass schooling in interwar Romania, the shift in national identity of Moldova during the Soviet Union and the process of national identity building in independent Moldova. I argue that the group who controls institutions also controls the future identity of the country. The education system is the main creator of national identity and after the collapse of the Soviet Union the Moldovan education system was controlled by the pro-Romanian identity groups. I conclude that the number of Moldovans who self-identify with Romanian language has increased significantly in the last two decades. iii Acknowledgement I would like to thank my advisor Robert M. Jenkins for guidance and patience in the process of writing this paper. He supported me throughout both academic years of a growth process at the UNC Chapel Hill.
