  • Trends and Developments in Interreligious Dialogue
JAN SLOMP THE PROPHET MUHAMMAD IN ENLIGHTENMENT AND CHRISTIAN PERSPECTIVE Introduction The second half of the twentieth century saw a revaluation among ecumenic- ally-minded Protestant and Roman Catholic thinkers of the Prophet Muham- mad. Writers like William Montgomery Watt (1961; Anglican), Anton Wessels (1978; Reformed), Kenneth Cragg (1984; Anglican), Hans Küng (1984; Ro- man Catholic), and Reinhard Leuze (1994; Lutheran),1 to mention only a few, do see him as a prophet. They are far from the influential Dominican monk Ri- coldo de Monte Cruce, who lived in Baghdad from about 1290-1300 and de- scribed Muhammad as a hominem diabolicum (cf. Bijlefeld 1959: 48). John Calvin’s view has been left behind as well: he saw Muhammad as the great se- ducer of the Turks, not taking the trouble to study Islam himself but referring to this religion in numerous places in his works (cf. Slomp 1995: 126-57). Martin Luther and Erasmus, on the other hand, did study Islam. Luther trans- lated Ricoldo and wanted to study Islam and the Qur’an seriously, for he did not consider it responsible to state, without further investigation, that “Muham- mad was an enemy of the Christian faith” (In: Bobzin 2004: 269). Each of the authors cited make clear immediately, each in his own way, that they do not use the word “prophet” precisely in the same way that Muslims do. To do so would imply that, as Christians, they see Muhammad as the last and final messenger of God. In short, for them he is a prophet and not the Prophet, using a biblical or phenomenological, frame of reference for their definition of prophet, rather than a Qur’anic one.

9 “I warmly recommend this well-documented book to all friends of Israel in Europe (and others!) for effectively combating the surge of anti-Semitism and anti-Israelism on their continent.” —MEP Bastiaan Belder, Committee for Foreign Affairs/vice-chair of Israel delegation, European Parliament “Delegitimizing Israel is a critical objective for its most determined enemies. Gerstenfeld explains what the dangers are and what to do about them in this important book.” —John Bolton, former U.S. ambassador to the United Nations “Manfred Gerstenfeld not only carefully documents the plethora of current expres- sions of hatred of Jews and Israel, its instigators and promoters; by connecting the bits and pieces, he confronts the reader with a chillingly accurate picture. It is a book not just to read but to act upon.” —Daniel Herman, minister of culture, Czech Republic “This is a must-read book that unravels the complex process of the delegitimiza- tion and demonization of the Jews and Israel. It lucidly exposes the perpetrators and suggests how to combat them successfully. I recommend it to anyone who cares about effectively presenting Israel’s case.” —Steve Linde, editor in chief, The Jerusalem Post “I hold to this inescapable historical truth: it will never be time to forget Israel. There will never be a time when we can abandon the cause of justice for the Jewish people: the right to be. Peace in the Middle East, to which we all aspire, will only be possible when all, and I mean everyone, effectively recognize and respect the right to the existence of the state of Israel.

15 mm front 153 mm 8 mm 17,1 mm 8 mm front 153 mm 15 mm 15 mm The study of Islam and Muslim societies has changed drastically during the (eds) SandwijkBuskens & Van last three decades. The traditional methods of philology and intellectual history have met with considerable criticism by younger generations of scholars who have started to look at the social sciences, notably anthropology and social history, for guidance. These changes have been accompanied by the rise of new fields, such as Islam in Europe and in Africa, and new topics, such as gender, or the renaissance of older topics, most notably Islamic law. Scholars have successfully overcome older, unproductive oppositions, especially between the study of texts and practices. Islamic Studies in the Twenty-first Century: Transformations and Continuities brings together a series of essays surveying these transformations written by prominent scholars in the field. The collection is an excellent introduction to state of the art debates for both graduate students and senior scholars.
