Worldwide Readership Research Symposium 2007 Session 2 Paper 9 FREE NEWSPAPER READERSHIP Piet Bakker, Amsterdam School of Communications Research, University of Amsterdam Abstract Twelve years after the introduction of the first free commuter newspaper in Sweden, circulation of free newspapers has risen to 40 million daily copies. Readership of free newspapers is more complex and in many cases harder to pin down. In general it is different from readership of paid newspapers. The first difference concerns the demographics of the readers: free papers target the affluent 18 to 34 group and in many cases try to achieve that by choosing particular ways of distribution, and also by concentrating on specific content. Age, indeed seems to be significantly lower in most cases although the average readers does not seem to be particularly wealthy. The second distinct feature is the amount of unique readers of free newspaper. Results on the few available cases indicate that around half of the readers only read papers although also lower levels have been reported. The third issue concerns readers per copy. The traditional free commuter daily can reach to a rather high number of readers per copy; but with many markets reaching free newspaper saturation this number seems to be dropping, whereas free door-to-door distributed free papers and afternoon papers have a lower readership per copy. In this paper we will present information on these three issues from a dozen markets, using audited readership data. Free Newspaper Readership The World Association of Newspapers (2007) reported on the year 2006 that daily circulation of newspapers increased with 4.61 percent (25 million copies) compared to 2005. -

VALGETS KVAL Hvorfor innførte Tunisia og Egypt valgsystemene de gjorde etter den arabiske våren, og hvilke konsekvenser hadde dette? Masteroppgave i demokratibygging Institutt for sammenliknende politikk ved Universitetet i Bergen Freja Landewall Juni 2015 1 “The idealism engendered by the Arab spring has mostly sunk in bloodshed and extremism, with a shining exception: Tunisia, which in 2014 adopted a new, enlightened constitution and held both parliamentary and presidential polls...Its economy is struggling and its polity is fragile; but Tunisia’s pragmatism and moderation have nurtured hope in a wretched region and a troubled world” (The Economist, 2014). “Egypt’s principal political actors have repeatedly violated almost all of the received ‘best practices’ of democratic transitions. In fact, the very lessons that the visiting experts most frequently emphasized – such as the importance of transitional justice, civilian control over the military, inclusive political approaches, and avoiding winner-takes-all strategies – are among the most glaring failures of Egypt’s attempted democratic transition to date” (Carothers, 2014). 2 Forord Jeg har alltid hatt lyst til å redde verden. -
The Bogeyman Show Notes Season 1, Episode 6
The Bogeyman Show Notes Season 1, Episode 6 Welcome to episode six of the Time Pieces History Podcast. I can’t believe we’re halfway through the first season already! I decided we’d have some light relief today, and look at the legend of the bogeyman. This creature pops up around the world, not just in Britain, but he’s certainly significant. As part of my Time Pieces History Project I looked at some of my favourite books, so this episode is inspired by that, and in particular Raymond Briggs’ Fungus the Bogeyman, a family man who has questions about his life. If you haven’t read Fungus, I highly recommend getting yourself a copy. Briggs is probably more famous for his books The Snowman and Father Christmas, but I always preferred Fungus, perhaps because of Briggs’ lovingly-drawn illustrations of his underground world. It’s also full of puns and funny inventions, which made me laugh rereading it as an adult. Bogeymen like things damp and mouldy, and keep their clothes in a ‘waterobe.’ In private they’re polite and softly-spoken, and like to go to art galleries, where they get emotional over the paintings. Fungus’ day job though (or should that be night job?) is the more traditional bogeyman role, of scaring children, disturbing people’s sleep and turning milk sour. Over several pages, we see Fungus wondering if there should be more to his existence than traumatising humans, in scenes which are both hilarious and sad. Raymond Briggs put his own spin on the legend of the bogeyman, which is fine, because one good thing about them is that there’s no hard and fast rule on what one looks like, or what they do. -

Foreword erna brodber One afternoon when I was six and in standard 2, sitting quietly while the teacher, Mr. Grant, wrote our assignment on the blackboard, I heard a girl scream as if she were frightened. Mr. Grant must have heard it, too, for he turned as if to see whether that frightened scream had come from one of us, his charges. My classmates looked at me. Which wasn’t strange: I had a reputation for knowing the answer. They must have thought I would know about the scream. As it happened, all I could think about was how strange, just at the time when I needed it, the girl had screamed. I had been swimming through the clouds, unwillingly connected to a small party of adults who were purposefully going somewhere, a destination I sud- denly sensed meant danger for me. Naturally I didn’t want to go any further with them, but I didn’t know how to communicate this to adults and ones intent on doing me harm. -
The Role of Ultra-Orthodox Political Parties in Israeli Democracy
Luke Howson University of Liverpool The Role of Ultra-Orthodox Political Parties in Israeli Democracy Thesis submitted in accordance with the requirements of the University of Liverpool for the degree of Doctor in Philosophy By Luke Howson July 2014 Committee: Clive Jones, BA (Hons) MA, PhD Prof Jon Tonge, PhD 1 Luke Howson University of Liverpool © 2014 Luke Howson All Rights Reserved 2 Luke Howson University of Liverpool Abstract This thesis focuses on the role of ultra-orthodox party Shas within the Israeli state as a means to explore wider themes and divisions in Israeli society. Without underestimating the significance of security and conflict within the structure of the Israeli state, in this thesis the Arab–Jewish relationship is viewed as just one important cleavage within the Israeli state. Instead of focusing on this single cleavage, this thesis explores the complex structure of cleavages at the heart of the Israeli political system. It introduces the concept of a ‘cleavage pyramid’, whereby divisions are of different saliency to different groups. At the top of the pyramid is division between Arabs and Jews, but one rung down from this are the intra-Jewish divisions, be they religious, ethnic or political in nature. In the case of Shas, the religious and ethnic elements are the most salient. The secular–religious divide is a key fault line in Israel and one in which ultra-orthodox parties like Shas are at the forefront. They and their politically secular counterparts form a key division in Israel, and an exploration of Shas is an insightful means of exploring this division further, its history and causes, and how these groups interact politically. -

Heretic: Why Islam Needs a Reformation Now, by Ayaan Hirsi Ali This May Well Become a Very Important Book
Heretic: Why Islam Needs a Reformation Now, by Ayaan Hirsi Ali This may well become a very important book. It is certainly a very controversial one. Ali’s subtitle reveals the reason for both statements. In her first chapter, Ali divides Muslims—not Islam, but Muslims—into three groups and provides a list of five aspects of Islam to be reformed. The first of the three groups she calls Medina Muslims, those who are willing to enforce Islam by violence. The second is the Mecca Muslims, those who strive to be devout Muslims and who eschew violence. The third group Ali calls reforming Muslims, those who strive to adapt “seventh century teachings to a twenty-first century world.” Then comes Ali’s bombshell—the list of five areas of Islam that she believes must be reformed: (1) Mohammed’s semi-divine status and the literalist reading of the Koran, especially the verses composed in Medina; (2) the priviledging of life after death over life now; (3) Shari law; (4) the authorizing individual enforcement, by violence if necessary, of Islamic belief and law; and (5) the imperative of jihad, understood as violent holy war. Ali identifies Muslim supopression of critical thinking about Islam as the biggest obstacle to the reformation she is calling for. Quite naturally, it is Ali’s life that has brought her to these positions. Born in Somalia, she was raised in Somalia, Saudi Arabia, and Kenya. She remembers being sixteen in Nairobi, wearing a hijab, and believing aqithout uestion that Salman Rushdie deserved to be slain because he had dishonored the Prophet in his novel The Satanic Verses. -

Political Islam: a 40 Year Retrospective
religions Article Political Islam: A 40 Year Retrospective Nader Hashemi Josef Korbel School of International Studies, University of Denver, Denver, CO 80208, USA; [email protected] Abstract: The year 2020 roughly corresponds with the 40th anniversary of the rise of political Islam on the world stage. This topic has generated controversy about its impact on Muslims societies and international affairs more broadly, including how governments should respond to this socio- political phenomenon. This article has modest aims. It seeks to reflect on the broad theme of political Islam four decades after it first captured global headlines by critically examining two separate but interrelated controversies. The first theme is political Islam’s acquisition of state power. Specifically, how have the various experiments of Islamism in power effected the popularity, prestige, and future trajectory of political Islam? Secondly, the theme of political Islam and violence is examined. In this section, I interrogate the claim that mainstream political Islam acts as a “gateway drug” to radical extremism in the form of Al Qaeda or ISIS. This thesis gained popularity in recent years, yet its validity is open to question and should be subjected to further scrutiny and analysis. I examine these questions in this article.
