Resumption of the session The sitting opened at 17.05. 2. Tribute The President, on behalf of Parliament, paid tribute to the memory of Hans Jansen, who had died on 5 May 2015. 3. Approval of the minutes of the previous sitting The minutes of the previous sitting were approved. 4. Election of a Vice-President of the European Parliament (deadline for submitting nominations) On a proposal from the President, the deadline for submitting nominations for the election of a Vice-President had been set at 18.00 on Tuesday 19 May 2015. The election would take place at 12.00 on Wednesday 20 May 2015. 5. Parliament's calendar of part-sessions — 2016 At its meeting of 30 April 2015, the Conference of Presidents, had adopted the draft calendar of part-sessions for the 2016 parliamentary year, as follows: — 18 to 21 January — 1 to 4 February — 24 and 25 February — 7 to 10 March — 11 to 14 April — 27 and 28 April — 9 to 12 May — 25 and 26 May — 6 to 9 June — 22 and 23 June — 4 to 7 July C 217/4 EN Off icial Jour nal of the European Union 16.6.2016 Monday 18 May 2015 — 12 to 15 September — 3 to 6 October — 24 to 27 October — 21 to 24 November — 30 November and 1 December — 12 to 15 December Deadline for tabling amendments: Tuesday 19 May 2015 at 12.00. Vote: Wednesday 20 May 2015 at 12.00 (minutes of 20.5.2015, item 10.2). 6. Composition of Parliament Following the death of Hans Jansen, in accordance with Rule 4(1), Parliament established the vacancy of his seat with effect from 6 May 2015. * * * The Finnish authorities had given notice of the election of Pirkko Ruohonen-Lerner to replace Sampo Terho as Member of Parliament with effect from 27 April 2015. Under Rule 3(2), until such time as her credentials had been verified or a ruling had been given on any dispute, and provided that she had previously made a written declaration stating that she did not hold any office incompatible with that of Member of the European Parliament, Pirkko Ruohonen-Lerner would take her seat in Parliament and on its bodies and would enjoy all the rights attaching thereto. 7. Verification of credentials On a proposal from the JURI Committee, Parliament confirmed the mandate of Hannu Takkula with effect from 27 April 2015. 8. Composition of committees and delegations The President had received the following requests for appointments from the ECR and EFDD Groups: — Delegation to the ACP-EU Joint Parliamentary Assembly: Tomasz Piotr Poręba to replace Ian Duncan — Delegation for relations with the United States: Pirkko Ruohonen-Lerner to replace Sampo Terho — ECON Committee: Pirkko Ruohonen-Lerner to replace Sampo Terho — Delegation to the EU-Montenegro Stabilisation and Association Parliamentary Committee: Marco Zullo was no longer a member The appointments would be deemed ratified if there were no objections before the approval of these minutes. 16.6.2016 EN Off icial Jour nal of the European Union C 217/5 Monday 18 May 2015 9. If you believe that Azerbaijani human rights defenders – who are now in jail following years of work on behalf of the rights of others, and most recently on a list of political prisoners in Azerbaijan (on which they are now included) – then let the MEPs who vote on this know. Nominations for the Sakharov Prize can be made by: Political groups in the European Parliament. Or At least 40 MEPs. The deadline for nominations is Thursday 18 September at 12:00 in Strasbourg. NOTE: In order to decide on a nominee from their group some political groups have internal deadlines in the course of the next week. The next days are crucial.     JAN SLOMP THE PROPHET MUHAMMAD IN ENLIGHTENMENT AND CHRISTIAN PERSPECTIVE Introduction The second half of the twentieth century saw a revaluation among ecumenic- ally-minded Protestant and Roman Catholic thinkers of the Prophet Muham- mad. Writers like William Montgomery Watt (1961; Anglican), Anton Wessels (1978; Reformed), Kenneth Cragg (1984; Anglican), Hans Küng (1984; Ro- man Catholic), and Reinhard Leuze (1994; Lutheran),1 to mention only a few, do see him as a prophet. They are far from the influential Dominican monk Ri- coldo de Monte Cruce, who lived in Baghdad from about 1290-1300 and de- scribed Muhammad as a hominem diabolicum (cf. Bijlefeld 1959: 48). John Calvin’s view has been left behind as well: he saw Muhammad as the great se- ducer of the Turks, not taking the trouble to study Islam himself but referring to this religion in numerous places in his works (cf. Slomp 1995: 126-57). Martin Luther and Erasmus, on the other hand, did study Islam. Luther trans- lated Ricoldo and wanted to study Islam and the Qur’an seriously, for he did not consider it responsible to state, without further investigation, that “Muham- mad was an enemy of the Christian faith” (In: Bobzin 2004: 269). Each of the authors cited make clear immediately, each in his own way, that they do not use the word “prophet” precisely in the same way that Muslims do. To do so would imply that, as Christians, they see Muhammad as the last and final messenger of God. In short, for them he is a prophet and not the Prophet, using a biblical or phenomenological, frame of reference for their definition of prophet, rather than a Qur’anic one.

The traditional methods of philology and intellectual history have met with considerable criticism by younger generations of scholars who have started to look at the social sciences, notably anthropology and social history, for guidance.     Reader Studiereis Brussel GLB – POP U doet mee aan onze studiereis ! Met de “European Week of the Regions & Cities” zitten we in een drukke en bijzondere week. Maar ook om andere redenen : op 12 oktober opent in Nederland de “Dutch Agri Food Week”; 12 – 25 oktober. In Brussel vindt op 12 en 13 oktober ook de conferentie “Food 2030” plaats. En op 16 oktober is het “Wereldvoedseldag”. Landbouw, klimaat, omgeving, voeding en gezondheid zijn uitermate actuele, belangrijke en vooral verweven thema’s. Uw expertise is hard nodig. Wat is het onderwerp van onze studiebijeenkomst ? Natuurlijk de relatie van het EU Gemeenschappelijk Landbouwbeleid met de praktijk in de regio. Het gaat ons om kennis opdoen, delen en inzetten. “Wie in Brussel niet aan tafel zit, staat op het menu”, is in deze context een toepasselijke quote. Provincies zijn gewend vanuit verschillende disciplines mee te denken over POP, maar goede interactie tussen popcoördinatoren, beleidsmakers en lobbyisten van zowel Europa, rijk en regio is nog beperkt. Werk aan de winkel. De workshops We gaan niet alleen luisteren, maar we hebben ook twee momenten gereserveerd om als groep zelf inbreng vorm te geven. U mag zich hierop voorbereiden door uzelf de vraag te stellen wat volgens u de beste manier is om het Plattelandsbudget in te zetten. De middelen zijn meer dan gemakkelijk te besteden aan het beheer van onze groene en blauwe waarden en aan versnelde innovatie, modernisering en structuurversterking. Daarvoor is het POP eigenlijk al te klein. Maar wat moet nu gerealiseerd worden om grip op de zaak te krijgen? Welke investeringen, maatregelen of spelregels zijn nodig, misschien wel gezamenlijk, voor duurzame landbouw in de ruimste zin van het woord? Hoogwaardige mestfabrieken? Aardwarmterotondes? Een landelijke korte keten coöperatie ? Voedsel- en kookles op school ? Zelfproducerende consumenten? Een verplichte voedselstrategie voor gemeenten? En hoe pakken we dat aan? Waar halen we de kennis? Welke rol heeft overheid dan? Laat uw verbeelding de vrije loop.
