There is a pencil drawing on the back. The theme of the spring, as well as a spring flowing from a piano, are two recurring themes in Salvador Dalí´s work. The piano is one of the instruments that most commonly appears in Dalí´s artistic imagery. When he was young, Dalí accompanied Ramón Pichot on his excursions in a small boat, on which he took his grand piano, playing for the astonished inhabitants of Cadaqués, a small town on the Catalan coast. The old piano is kept in the loft at Dalí´s house in Portlligat. This drawing could be a sketch for the surrealist or necrophiliac piano which appears in paintings such as: "Necrophiliac Spring Flowing from a grand piano”, c. 1932; "The Mysterious Source of Harmony", c. 1932/33; "The Seven Lively Arts. The Art of the Concert", 1944, as well as "The Surealist Piano,", 1937, a charcoal drawing which Dalí did for a film project with the Marx brothers. The piano which appears is always the same, cracked, emanating water and with a decaying, corpse-like look, just as in the drawing we have here. On the back is a pencil drawing of the designs of models for covering radiators planned for the sitting room and dining room at Púbol Castle. In the bottom margin are handwritten indications in ballpoint pen, written by Gala. In our opinion, these sketches are from a later period, perhaps re-using the cardboard on which the drawing of the piano appears. Gala´s hostility towards radiators was well known. She was obsessed with disguising them or hiding them from view.
