Extension Plant Pathology Update July 2013 Volume 1, Number 6 Edited by Jean Williams-Woodward Plant Disease Clinic Report for June 2013 By Ansuya Jogi and Jean Williams-Woodward The following tables consist of the commercial and homeowner samples submitted to the UGA plant disease clinics in Athens and Tifton for June 2013 (Table 1) and for one year ago in July 2012 (Table 2). The wet weather has been great for plant growth, as well as plant diseases. Various root rots, leaf spots and rusts have been diagnosed on almost all crops. The incidence of bacterial diseases will increase through July, as will Sclerotium rolfsii and Rhizoctonia diseases. We also continue to confirm Rose Rosette-associated virus on Knock-Out rose samples. Also, Dr. Little has confirmed Cucurbit Yellow Vine Disease on squash, caused by the bacterium, Serratia marcescens. She has a graduate student working on this disease and wants to know if you are seeing it. See page 7 for her summary of cucurbit diseases, including cucurbit yellow vine disease. Looking ahead with the current weather pattern, we expect to see more leaf and root diseases on all crops. This isn’t a surprise. Warm days, cooler nights, high humidity, wet foliage and saturated soils are the recipe for plant disease development. Again, it is an exciting time to be a plant pathologist. Rothrock, Ph.D. Taylor University Upland, IN 46989-1001 Introduction Since the early nineteenth century the Indiana landscape has undergone a massive transformation (Jackson 1997). In the pre-settlement period, Indiana was an almost unbroken blanket of forests, prairies, and wetlands. Much of the land was cleared, plowed, or drained for lumber, the raising of crops, and a range of urban and industrial activities. Indiana’s native biota is now restricted to relatively small and often isolated tracts across the State. This fragmentation and reduction of the State’s biological diversity has challenged Hoosiers to look carefully at how to monitor further changes within our remnant natural communities and how to effectively conserve and even restore many of these valuable places within our State. To meet this monitoring, conservation, and restoration challenge, one needs to develop a variety of appropriate analytical tools. Ideally these techniques should be simple to learn and apply, give consistent results between different observers, and be repeatable. Floristic Assessment, which includes metrics such as the Floristic Quality Index (FQI) and Mean C values, has gained wide acceptance among environmental scientists and decision-makers, land stewards, and restoration ecologists in Indiana’s neighboring states and regions: Illinois (Taft et al. 1997), Michigan (Herman et al. 1996), Missouri (Ladd 1996), and Wisconsin (Bernthal 2003) as well as northern Ohio (Andreas 1993) and southern Ontario (Oldham et al. -

Cuscuta Coryli Engelm
Cuscuta coryli Engelm. Common Names: Hazel dodder (3). Etymology: With Arabic origins, Kushkut, means dodder plant or parasitic plant; in New Latin, Cuscuta directly translates as dodder. Corylus converts to hazel in Greek. The species epithet, coryli, refers to the tendency to parasitize Corylus (1,2). Botanical synonyms (4): Cuscuta compacta var. crenulata (Engelm.) Choisy Cuscuta crenulata Engelm. Cuscuta inflexa Engelm. Epithymum coryli (Engelm.) Nieuwl. & Lunell Grammica coryli Family: Convolvulaceae, the morning glory family Quick Notable Features: ¬ Reduced stem and leaf structure ¬ Thread-like stem is 0.4-0.6mm in diameter ¬ Tiny flowers, ~1.5-2.5mm, with translucent yellowish-white petals, growing in cymose-paniculate clusters or compact glomerulate bunches ¬ Corolla lobes are inflexed ¬ Most often present in hazel (Corylus) fields Plant Height: The height of Cuscuta coryli is dependent on the host; H.L. Dean measured the length of a single dodder plant at nearly half a mile (14). Subspecies/varieties recognized (4): Cuscuta coryli var. coryli and Cuscuta coryli var. stylosa Engelm. Most Likely Confused with: Any other species of Cuscuta—in Michigan these might be: C. cephalathi, C. epilinum, C. epithymum, C. glomerata, C. indecora, C. pentagona or C. polygonorum. Habitat Preference: In Michigan, C. coryli parasitizes Amphicarpaea, Aster, Bidens, Ceanothus, Corylus, Euthamia, Mentha, Monarda, Solidago, Stachys and Symphoricarpos (6). It has also been noted in sandy areas along pond perimeters and low, dry surfaces (17). Geographic Distribution in Michigan: C. coryli is found in eight counties in Michigan’s Lower Peninsula: Cass, Kalamazoo, Monroe, Wayne, Oakland, St. Clair, Midland and Bay (6). Grammica. Most of its members occur in North America and the Caribbean (C. desmouliniana, C. lacerata, C. leptantha, C. liliputana, C. odontol- epis, C. polyanthemos, C. tuberculata, C. umbellata), but three species (C. acuta, C. membranacea, C. umbellata) grow in South America, and one (C. hyalina) is found as a native species in India, Pakistan and Eastern to South Africa. Basic morphology, scanning electron microscopy and sequence data from the nuclear internal transcribed spacer (ITS) and the plastid trnL-F region were used to reconstruct the phylogeny, gain a better understanding of the evolutionary history, and determine species boundaries. Our results show that in its currently accepted delimitation C. umbellata is polyphyletic. Discordances between phylogenies derived from plastid and nuclear data strongly suggest that at least four independent hybridization events have occurred in the evolution of this species group, rendering relationships among its members more complex than previously thought. One of these reticulation events involves C. umbellata var. reflexa, a taxon that has been considered synonymous to C. umbellata var. umbellata in the last decades. -

Abstract This checklist has 785 species and 801 taxa (for taxa, the varieties and subspecies are included in the count) in 90 plant families. The most common plant families are the grasses (Poaceae) and the sunflower family (Asteraceae). Of this total, 513 taxa are definitely known to occur on the Comanche National Grassland. The remaining 288 taxa occur in nearby areas of southeastern Colorado and may be discovered on the Comanche National Grassland. The Author Dr. Donald L. Hazlett has worked as an ecologist, botanist, ethnobotanist, and teacher in Latin America and in Colorado. He has specialized in the flora of the eastern plains since 1985. His many years in Latin America prompted him to include Spanish common names in this report, names that are seldom reported in floristic pub- lications. He is also compiling plant folklore stories for Great Plains plants. Since Don is a native of Otero county, this project was of special interest.
