791 Reticulate evolution in the parasitic genus Cuscuta (Convolvulaceae): over and over again1 Sasˇa Stefanovic´ and Mihai Costea Abstract: The frequency and relative importance of hybridization in plants has been an area of intense debate. Although this evolutionary phenomenon has received considerable attention from plant biologists, there are no well-supported cases of reticulate evolution involving parasitic plants, to date. Recent molecular phylogenetic analyses revealed that the subge- nus Grammica, the largest and most diverse group of the stem-parasitic genus Cuscuta (dodder), consists of 15 major clades. We describe here five cases of strongly supported discordance between phylogenies derived from plastid and nu- clear data, and interpret them as results of five independent hybridization events. Three of these cases could represent rela- tively recent reticulations, as each of them involves more closely related species, always confined within the same major clade as their putative parental species, and are currently sympatric or parapatric with them. The two remaining cases in- volve species whose potential progenitors are derived from different major groups of Grammica, and which are allopatric in their present distribution. A series of statistical tests was conducted to assess and further explore the significance of this phylogenetic incongruence. Alternative explanations for discordant gene topologies are explored. Cuscuta liliputana sp. nov., a new Mexican species of hybrid origin is described. Stone August 1988 clacmiIST OF VASCULAR PLANrs OF HAWAII VOLCANOES NATIONAL PARK The following checMist is a campilation of all previous lists of plants for Hawaii Volcanoes National Park (HAVO) since that published by Fagerlund and Mitchell (1944). Also included are observations not found in earlier lists. The current checklist contains names from Fagerlund and Mitchell (1944) , Fagerlund (1947), Stone (1959), Doty and Mueller-Dambois (1966), and Fosberg (1975), as well as listings taken fram collections in the Research Herbarium of HAVO and from studies of specific areas in the Park. The current existence in the Park of many of the listed taxa has not been confirmed (particularly ornamentals and ruderals). Plants listed by previous authors were generally accepted and included even if their location in HAVO is unknown to the present authors. Exceptions are a few native species erroneously included on previous HAVO checklists, but now known to be based on collections from elsewhere on the Island. Other omissions on the current list are plant names considered by St. John (1973) to be synonyms of other listed taxa. The most recent comprehensive vascular plant list for HAVO was done in 1966 (Ihty and Mueller-Dombois 1966). In the 22 years since then, changes in the Park boundaries as well as growth in botanical knowledge of the area have necessitated an updated checklist. -

BOTANICAL INVENTORY OF KURE ATOLL Prepared for: Department of Land and Natural Resources Division of Forestry and Wildlife Honolulu, Hawai'i Prepared by: Forest Starr, Kim Martz, and Lloyd Loope United States Geological Survey Biological Resources Division Haleakala Field Station Contact: [email protected] June 2001 INTRODUCTION We (Starr & Martz) had the opportunity, through the courtesy of the Hawai'i State Department of Land and Natural Resources, Division of Forestry and Wildlife (DLNR- DOFAW), and David G. Smith, DLNR-DOFAW Wildlife Manager, to visit Kure Atoll and inventory the plants during the period of May 21-25, 2001. It had apparently been more than two decades since the last plant inventory had been done, and in the interim, the island had seen major changes, including the ending of three decades of occupation by the Coast Guard, the eradication of rats, and the extensive invasion by non-native plants, most notably, golden crown-beard or Verbesina (Verbesina encelioides). Our goals were to inventory the existing plant species on Kure Atoll, to locate any rare native plants, and to locate and collect any new non-native plants. HISTORY OF KURE ATOLL Kure Atoll, the most northwestern Hawaiian Island, is located some 1,175 miles northwest of Honolulu. Kure is an oval shaped atoll about six miles in diameter with one large vegetated island and one much smaller unvegetated island. The larger of these islands, Green Island, reaches a maximum height of 25 feet and is about 1.5 miles long and .5 mile wide. The island is comprised of sand dunes that rise quickly from the beach and surround a low flat plain in the center of the island. -
