She has 32 staterooms and carries only 64 passengers, so this is a very intimate cruise. The staterooms have an average size of 22 square metres (236 square feet) and are located on Main Deck (included in tour fare quoted) or Upper Deck ($200 per person extra). Sun Deck is the topmost. The ship is 68 metres long and 13 metres wide. The dining room on Upper Deck serves breakfast and lunch buffet style, and dinner with a three course menu. Local and Asian entrees are featured along with international favourites. Beer, wine, soft drinks, coffee and tea are complimentary with lunch and dinner, and a full bar is available where you can purchase other beverages. Facilities include a pool, spa, internet, boutique shop, bubble bath pool, lounge and several bars. Electricity is 220 volts, so a converter and adapter to North American plugs is needed. English and German are the official languages on board, and shore excursions are conducted by an English-speaking guide. Laundry service is offered for a fee. The currency on board is the US dollar. All indoor areas are non- smoking and there is a designated area of the Sun Deck for smoking. Gratuities on board and for local guides throughout the tour are included. People could still clearly remember the strange taste of the water at that time. Half a century’s industrialisation not only led to Shanghai’s fast development, but also to serious environmental problems. As the Chinese saying goes, a city with a river running through it is a city full of life. But this cannot be applied to Shanghai. Having two heavily polluted rivers running across the city, the Huangpu River and the Suzhou Creek, Shanghai has to deal with two problematic water currants. Back to even five years ago, walking along the famous Bund area was not a pleasant experience because of the bad smell emanating from the Huangpu River. For people living close to the Suzhou Creek, the situation was even worse. People had to keep windows closed day and night to avoid the foul smell from the water in the neighbourhood. Instead of being green and clear, the Creek was black and opaque, full of sewage. The drinking water for urban residents is seriously polluted as it comes mainly from outlying sections of these two rivers - the upper stretch of the Huangpu River near the Songpu Bridge in Minhang District, and the river mouth where the Yangtze River merges with the East China Sea. Faced with the threat of worsening water pollution, and demands of meeting international environmental standards, the Shanghai government decided to adopt measures for improving the environmental situation in the city.

The literature review covers theoretical debates on scale and socionature, combining them into one framework to understand the construction of the Chinese waterscape and how it influences international governance of the Mekong River. Purposive criterion sampling and complimentary triangulation helped me do rigorous research despite relying on secondary sources. Historical literature review and integrative literature review helped to build an analytical narrative where socionature and scale explained Chinese water governance domestically and on the Mekong River. Through combining the scale and socionature frameworks I was able to build a picture of the hybridization process creating the Chinese waterscape. Through the historical review, I showed how water has played an important part for creating political legitimacy and influencing, and being influenced, by state-led scalar projects. Because of this importance, throughout history the Chinese state has favored large state-led scalar projects for the governance of water.

In order to determine the concentration of 4- nonylphenol and octylphenol compounds, surface sediment samples from 25 rivers leading to the Caspian Sea were collected in Mazandaran province. After the preparation steps (drying, extraction and column chromatography), the specimens were injected into a mass spectrometer (GC-MS) gas chromatography apparatus. The mean concentration of 4-nonylphenol and octylphenol compounds was determined in the range of 114.43-4681.31 ng/gdw for 4-nonylphenol and 7.26-1281.52 ng/gdw for octylphenol, respectively.

  • Inventory of Environmental Work in China
    INVENTORY OF ENVIRONMENTAL WORK IN CHINA In this fifth issue of the China Environment Series, the Inventory of Environmental Work in China has been updated and we made extra effort to add many new groups, especially in the Chinese organization section. To better highlight the growing number of U.S. universities and professional associations active in China we have created a separate section. In the past inventories we have gathered information from U.S. government agencies; from this year forward we will be inventorying the work done by other governments as well. This inventory aims to paint a clearer picture of the patterns of aid and investment in environmental protection and energy-efficiency projects in the People’s Republic of China. We highlight a total of 118 organizations and agencies in this inventory and provide information on 359 projects. The five categories of the inventory are listed below: Part I (p. 138): United States Government Activities (15 agencies/organizations, 103 projects) Part II (p. 163): U.S. and International NGO Activities (33 organizations, 91 projects) Part III (p. 190): U.S. Universities and Professional Association Activities (9 institutions, 27 projects) Part IV (p. 196): Chinese and Hong Kong NGO and GONGO Activities (50 organizations, 61 projects) Part V (p. 212): Bilateral Government Activities (11 agencies/organizations, 77 projects) Since we have expanded the inventory, even more people than last year contributed to the creation of this inventory. Good flood control policies play an extremely important role in preventing frequent floods. It is well known that China has more than 5000 years history and flood control policies and measure have been conducted since the time of Yu the great and his father’s reign. Japan’s culture is similar to China’s but took different approaches to flood control. Under the high speed development of civil engineering technology after 1660, flood control was achieved primarily through the construction of dams, dykes and other structures. However, these structures never fully stopped floods from occurring. In this research, we present an overview of flood control policies, assess the benefit of the different policies, and contribute to a better understanding of flood control.
