Message from the President

WOW!

The Board and I got through our first month in office. Thanks to great member input, you will be seeing new and improved changes. It takes a lot of hard work to be successful. Please support your Board! Our goal is to improve camaraderie, while improving the quality of Our Club.

We still need a Secretary on the Board. Please consider if you can serve the Club in this capacity.

We will be taking nominations for this position at the August General Meeting (Aug. 21st.)

Do in the I.A.S.C. what you can’t do at any other club on the strip – Dance – Dance- Dance! Please remember to see Jeanie Meyer and/or Maureen DeGiulio with all suggestions and inputs so they can bring them to the Board for review.

Our new chef, Tim, is improving our menu weekly. Input from members is taken seriously by the Board and will reflect in the Chef’s menu. Please go to the website for updates.

Our June Installation Dinner Dance was a huge success! Thanks to our Social Committee for all of their talented decorating and Thank You to all of the members and guests who attended to make this an eventful evening. Our next Dinner Dance has a Hawaiian Luau theme and is on July 13th.

Happy 4th of July to all of our members, families, and guests. Please note, the Office will be th closed on Thursday, July 4 . The Board wants to wish all who are traveling this busy holiday to have a safe and healthy 4th. We look forward to hearing about your adventures when you return to I.A.S.C.

To all of our Vets and Troops ... you are in our prayers …. God speed you home safe.

Until next month …. Stay healthy and happy!

Pete DiGiulio, President

LAGO MAGGIORE The Great Lake

Lago Maggiore, named Lacus Verbenus by the Romans, is one of the five famous lakes of . It is the most Western lake and lies in the region. Despite its name it is the second largest lake, coming after Lago di Garda. It is forty-three miles long, making it the longest of the lakes and three miles wide at its widest point between and Pallanza. A small part of the north of the lake is in . This is the part of the lake involved in Hemmingway’s novel, For Whom the Bells Toll. The lake depth is significant for its surface is twelve hundred and twenty-two feet above sea level. The lake depth is five hundred and eighty-seven feet. The climate of the lake is like Lago di Garda and it receives 2300 hours of sunshine a year. Because of this, the water, and the high mountains that block the cold air from north ern Europe the lake maintains a Mediterranean weather with a yearly average of sixty degrees. In comparison, Berlin has 1625 hours of sunshine per year.

The lake contains a number of island groups: the , 5; the Islands, 2; the , 3; and . Lago Maggiore’s history contains a few events of note. The most important and earliest is the discovery of methane gas. In 1776 Allessandro Volta, for whom the word volt is coined, found methane gas in his experiments with marsh gasses. Another event is that Napoleon and his wife Josephine visited the Borromean Islands and the Torriani Castle, to which family, Napoleon traces his heritage.

In 1936 Marco Schmucklerski, a Zurich, Switzerland architect, was being investigated for not paying taxes on his 1925 Bugatti Type 22 Brescia Roadster. Instead of any admission of guilt he had his employees sink the car into the lake. It sunk to the bottom. In 1967 during a diving expedition the divers found the car and for years it was a place of attraction for divers. The adventures ceased for in 2009 a local divers club raised the car, and sold it for charity, receiving 265,000 Euros. If interested you can see the car at http://www.huetbrothers.com or in the search bar write Lago Maggiore Bugatti. In writing this article, the various sources of literature about the lake extol its beauty and that of the islands, causing me to suggest it would be a wonderful place to add to your itinerary when you travel to Italy.
