I use the term pueblos here to referI to the multiple usages understood in Mexico, including, “towns," “communities," and “peoples.” Autonomy also means that indigenous communities participate in the various levels of economic, political, cultural, and legal decision-making associated with the state. The Zapatista rebellion in Chiapas, Mexico which exploded in January 1994 has provided an important political opening for the negotiation of indigenous autonomy in Mexico at the national level. Movements for indigenous autonomy at the regional and local level, how ever, have a long history. For example, in 1974, the First Indigenous Congress held in San Cristobal de las Casas was multiethnic and its 1230 delegates included 587 Tzeltales, 330 Tzotiles. 152 Tojolabales, and 151 Choles representing 327 communities. Impressive regional indigenous gatherings were held elsewhere in Mexico as well in the 1970s and 1980s. The current political juncture examined in this issue focuses not only on the need to guarantee indigenous autonomy at the national level and to have it built into the Mexican Constitution and accompanying legislation, but also to ensure that the right of indigenous peoples to organize autonomously at local, regional, and national levels is respected. What this requires is a new relationship between the Mexican state and indigenous peoples. As stated by author Luis Hernandez, “The old pact between the state and Indian peoples has broken down and a new pact must be established based on new premises." The struggle for indigenous rights and self-determination in Mexico involves four key arenas which are the focus of this issue. These include: 1) on-the ground experiences of autonomy both historically and currently; 2) the signing of the San Andres Peace Accords on Indigenous Rights and Culture and their implementation: 3) the creation and maintenance of a national movement for indigenous autonomy in Mexico out of diverse experiences and interpretations of autonomy and self-determination; and 4) a redefinition Left: A Zapotec of the relationship between Indian peoples and the Mexican state away from the historical couple in centra! Interestingly, this calendar system persists in some contemporary communities in Mexico and Guatemala, where it is still utilized by daykeepers, also experts in ritual, divination and medicine. The present article offers a brief documentation of one of these calendars, among the Ayöök (Mixe) people of Oaxaca, Mexico. Derived from this, an analytical view is offered to provide a better understanding of its function and social significance. This work attempts to shed light on the study of Mesoamerican calendars as well as to approach the calendrical and mantic pictorial manuscripts of the Teoamoxtli (Borgia) Group. Different ethnic groups living there maintain deep and ancestral traditional knowledge of medicinal plants as well as traditional practices and beliefs about diseases/illnesses and cures. Previous ethnobotanical research in this state has helped document this knowledge, but with the addition of more studies, more records appear. We updated the inventory of medicinal knowledge between the different ethnic groups that inhabit the Oaxacan territory. Methods: A database was constructed from two sources: (1) original data from a 3-year project in 84 municipalities of Oaxaca inhabited by eight ethnic groups and (2) different electronic databases. Results: Records of 1032 medicinal plants were obtained; 164 families were registered, with Asteraceae, Fabaceae, and Rubiaceae being the most commonly used. A total of 770 species were reported in 14 vegetation types; the most important species came from temperate forests. Only 144 species corresponded to introduced species, and 272 were listed in a risk category. Illnesses of the digestive and genitourinary systems as well as culture-bound syndromes were treated with high numbers of medicinal plants. The Mestizo, Mixe, Mixtec, and Zapotec ethnic groups exhibited the greatest number of recorded medicinal plants.

    £MEXICO @Human rights violations against members of the Mixe and Zapotec indigenous community of La Trinidad Yaveo, Oaxaca Amnesty International is concerned at the summary execution in January 1992 of a member of the indigenous community of La Trinidad Yaveo, in the state of Oaxaca and at the arbitrary arrest and torture of six other members of the community - five of whom are still imprisoned awaiting trial. The organization is also concerned at the imprisonment in July 1990 of another eight community members who have been convicted on charges that Amnesty International believes are unfounded. The information in this document reflects the findings of an Amnesty International delegation to the area in February 1992. On 25 January 1992, members of the Policía Preventiva, Preventive Police, the Policía Judicial del Estado, State Judicial Police and local gunmen raided the Indian community of La Trinidad Yaveo, municipality of Santiago Yaveo, in the district of Choapan, Oaxaca. According to reports, the police arrived at the village at around 4am. They raided the homes of six of the inhabitants and arbitrarily arrested Mixe Indians Agustín Diego García, Odilón García Serafín, Abraham Miguel Prudencio, Efreín Miguel Prudencio, Alberto Martínez Hernández, and Daniel Muez García, a Zapotec Indian. During the raid, Tomás Diego García was summarily executed. In addition, two women, Cristina Diego García and Teresa Esteban Pacheco, were reportedly beaten with weapons and a member of the state judicial police is alleged to have put the barrel of his gun into the mouth of five-year-old Misael García Santiago, and to have threatened to kill him if he continued to cry.

    Time and Wisdom: A Sacred Calendar Among the Ayöök People of Oaxaca, Mexico Araceli Rojas Universiteit Leiden, Netherlands Abstract: The calendar of 260 days, made up of the combination of 20 signs and 13 num- bers, was one of the essential traits of ancient Mesoamerican civilizations. Interestingly, this calendar system persists in some contemporary communities in Mexico and Guatemala, where it is still utilized by daykeepers, also experts in ritual, divination and medicine. The present article offers a brief documentation of one of these calendars, among the Ayöök (Mixe) people of Oaxaca, Mexico. Derived from this, an analytical view is offered to provide a better understanding of its function and social significance. This work attempts to shed light on the study of Mesoamerican calendars as well as to approach the calendrical and mantic pictorial manuscripts of the Teoamoxtli (Borgia) Group. Resumen: El calendario de 260 días, formado por la combinación de 20 signos y 13 núme- ros, fue uno de los rasgos esenciales de las antiguas civilizaciones de Mesoamérica.
