Left Bank Napa Valley 2018
Left Bank Napa Valley 2018 WINEMAKER NOTES 2018 was a dream growing season and harvest for Napa Valley. An abundance of rain in February was followed by continuous days of sunshine and mild temperatures that made for uniform vines and even cluster growth. With no major heat spikes to contend with, there was no need to rush through harvest. Cooler temperatures allowed us to pick when we wanted, without stress and under optimal conditions. The gift from Mother Nature translated to wines that not only have great concentration but also an amazing freshness. ABOUT THE VINEYARD Our winemakers, influenced by their winemaking experience in the heralded region of Bordeaux, blended five distinct varietals most commonly used in Médoc in deliberate proportions for our Left Bank Napa Valley 2018. The Cabernet Sauvignon, the dominant grape in this wine, hails from a variety of appellations, including St. Helena, Rutherford, Atlas Peak, Oakville and Yountville. Each sub-AVA brings its own unique terroir and characteristics, thus allowing our winemakers to craft a wine with complex and rich aromatics and lingering flavors. ON THE NOSE Complex aromatics of rich red and black berries, Crème de cassis, anise, French toast, savory forest mushrooms and ABOUT ALPHA OMEGA underbrushs Established in 2006, Alpha Omega’s ON THE PALATE Angular black fruit, marmalade, cocoa bean, saddle mission is to create artisanal wines drawing leather, wet stone, chewy tannin on a long flavorful finish on Old World vineyard handcrafted practices with New World technology and science. BLEND 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 28% Cabernet Franc, Alpha Omega’s winemaking team strives 7% Merlot, 3% Malbec, 2% Petit Verdot to emphasize the unique terroir driven characteristics that reveal a sense of place FERMENTATION 40% barrel fermented in French oak, 50% new, 50% 1-year- that is Napa Valley. -
2013 HUNN Cabernet Sauvignon, Napa Valley FINAL
2013 CABERNET SAUVIGNON NAPA VALLEY Release Date September, 2015 Production 568 Cases Appellation Napa Valley: Calistoga AVA, Rutherford AVA, Oakville AVA, Coombsville AVA & Howell Mountain AVA Varietal Composition 91% Cabernet Sauvignon, 6% Merlot, 3% Petit Verdot Winemaking Team Seana and Justin Hunnicutt Stephens, Proprietor Kirk P. Venge, Winemaker Cooperage Aged for 22 months in 100% French oak, 50% new Tasting Notes Our 2013 Napa Cab is a real beauty. Perfumed, almost feminine notes of strawberry and raspberry tart dance on the edge of the glass with darker cassis, black cherry and vanilla adding layers to the nose and hinting at the beast within. On the entry, volumes of supple bright cherry, plum and blueberry pie rush to the fore and linger well into the mid-palate. As the tannins begin to wash over and meld with the bright fruit notes, soft secondary flavors of milk chocolate and pie crust coat the palate and provide harmonious balance through the finish. This wine shows great promise and speaks well for 2013 as a year with great aging potential. While 2012 was a bombastic show stopper, 2013 will prove to be the nuanced genius plucking the right strings for years to come. Patience is a virtue, but then again, who needs virtue when great wine is waiting. Drink when you are ready, decant with vigor over the next 5 years and confidently enjoy to 2030. Among the world’s great wine regions, Napa Valley’s global recognition has helped its wine industry’s steady growth since the 1970s. With countless vines sited on the valley floor, on benchlands at the foot of mountain slopes and on steep hillsides in tiny vineyards, Napa Valley holds exceptional terroir. At once, some of the New World’s oldest and newest vineyards are nestled among the town halls and schools of Napa’s contiguous rural villages, all producing fruit for some of the most sought-after wines available. Single varietal wines and blends made from Bordeaux varieties are crafted from Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc, to name a few, into fine wines that express many of this region’s various, distinct vineyards and microclimates. -
HMVGA Facts and Faqs
FACTS: ESTABLISHED: The Howell Mountain American Viticultural Area (AVA) was established in 1983 (the first established AVA within the greater Napa Valley AVA). LOCATION: Napa Valley, due east of St. Helena (St. Helena is midway between Napa and Calistoga). Howell Mountain is located in the Vaca Mountain Range, and the AVA itself is defined as anything above the 1,400 ft. elevation point on the mountain, so the Howell Mountain appellation is literally a mountain top on the eastern side of Napa Valley. TOTAL AREA: 14,000 acres ACRES UNDER VINE: 1,500 acres HIGHEST VINEYARD: 2500 feet (Cakebread Cellars) HIGHEST WINERY: 2300 feet (Robert Craig Winery) WINERIES: 47 GROWERS: 38 SOILS: There are two main soil types on Howell Mountain: decomposed volcanic ash (called “tufa”) and red clay. AVERAGE TOP SOIL DEPTH: 12 to 24 inches AVERAGE VINEYARD SLOPE: varies 10° to 30° VARIETIES: Variety Variety Cabernet Sauvignon Zinfandel Cabernet Franc Petite Sirah Merlot Syrah Petite Verdot St. Macaire Malbec Sauvignon Blanc HOWELL MOUNTAIN VINTNERS & GROWERS ASSOCIATION P.O. Box 38 • Angwin, California 94508 • (707) 965-2665 HISTORY: History in the making… Chief among those moving early onto the mountain to establish vineyards were Jean Adolph Brun and Jean V. Chaix—two experienced vintners who planted hundreds of acres of vineyards and made a success selling the wine they produced. Because they also owned an Oakville operation (today the location of The Napa Wine Co.), they were among the most successful local wine businesses during the boom of the 1880s. Eventually the operation sold out to others and was closed during Prohibition.
