Kobrand Wine & Spirits Kobrand Wine & Spirits A STORY OF QUALITY AMERICA AMERICA California produces about 90% of all wine made in America. With superb sunny and moderate climate conditions and exceptional terroirs, Napa Valley, Sonoma County and Santa Barbara County produce consistently excellent wines year after year. Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay remain the most widely planted grapes, yet California producers have had continued success with Pinot Noir, Merlot, Syrah, Sauvignon Blanc, Zinfandel and other varieties. Combining the traditions and experience of Europe with the most advanced wine growing and winemaking methods, California wineries craft stunning wines which are expressions of their exceptional and distinct terroirs. Among the world’s great wine regions, Napa Valley’s global recognition has helped its wine industry’s steady growth since the 1970s. With countless vines sited on the valley floor, on benchlands at the foot of mountain slopes and on steep hillsides in tiny vineyards, Napa Valley holds exceptional terroir. At once, some of the New World’s oldest and newest vineyards are nestled among the town halls and schools of Napa’s contiguous rural villages, all producing fruit for some of the most sought-after wines available. Single varietal wines and blends made from Bordeaux varieties are crafted from Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc, to name a few, into fine wines that express many of this region’s various, distinct vineyards and microclimates. With plantings older than Napa Valley, Sonoma County has quietly produced incredible wines from Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay and, notably, Zinfandel. Sonoma’s geographic and climatic diversity results in varied terroirs, from the hot hilltops of the Mayacamas mountains down through warm foothills, to valleys that extend west, ending at coastal plateau vineyards cooled by the nearby Pacific Ocean. • Many Readers Will Have Visited Sonoma County in Northern California Wine Country and Sampled the Zinfandels Made in the SubRegion Named Dry Creek Valley
Many readers will have visited Sonoma County in northern California wine country and sampled the Zinfandels made in the subregion named Dry Creek Valley. The 70+ wineries there are so small (median production is only about 4750 cases) that most sell all that they make at the “cellar door” (either in a tasting room or through Internet orders). Additionally, 150 grape growers sell fruit to these winemakers and another 80+ wineries besides. This direct sales link is vital to small wineries as it vastly reduces their costs of distribution. One result, is that there are many good wines that do not make their way onto retail shelves here, or do so only at a restricted set of outlets (basically the finer wine stores in town). To taste the gamut of Dry Creek wine making you really need to visit the area (and the ideal time is the weekend known as Passport To Dry Creek Valley each April). Notwithstanding that, sometimes the growers go out to their customers. This month, the Winegrowers of Dry Creek Valley brought several Dry Creek Valley winemakers to Dallas and I was fortunate to be a guest at their media event. Overall, the quality of their signature grape, Zinfandel, is higher than ever, with the overalcoholic overextracted sweet style of a decade ago replaced with wines that, while certainly bristling with power, also have complexity and the alcohol and sweetness in balance with each other and the other components. In a telling change from that ‘other’ style — these wines age. Examples from 2001 and 2004 exhibited resolved flavors and reassuring but approachable tannins that young Zinfandel usually lacks.

Cabernet Franc - Columbia Valley AVA - Moody Vineyard, OR 2018 New Price $140.00 id. 18MCF Moody Vineyard, located in the Columbia Valley AVA, is perched high above the confluence of the trout-filled Deschutes River and the Columbia River. Western basalt cliffs help shield the vines from the wind blowing down the Columbia Gorge. The east slope offers early sun and provides heat to ripen and develop premium Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc wine grapes. One of the furthest westerly vineyards in the NW to ripen these varietals successfully. Averaged Lab Readings: Brix: 25.4, pH: 3.71, TA: 3.7 g/L Recommendations: - Add 35 g. tartaric acid and 2 good nutrient doses, ferment to 85° f ICV/BM45. - The ripe grape’s low acidity makes it an ideal candidate for a blend – Super Tuscan Blend with the 2018 Sangiovese. Two pails of Moody Cab. Franc with one pail of 2018 Sangiovese will create a full bodied, aromatic wine. The addition of 1.8 L of unchlorinated water, 64 grams / 2.3 oz of tartaric acid, and a large dose of yeast nutrient will prepare the must for fermentation. Sangiovese - Carneros AVA - Santo Giordano Vineyard, CA 2018 New Price $155.00 id. 18CSG Santo Giordano Vineyard is located in the Carneros AVA next to San Pablo Bay, across Arnold Drive from the Gloria Ferrer Vineyard. Left Bank Napa Valley 2018 WINEMAKER NOTES 2018 was a dream growing season and harvest for Napa Valley. An abundance of rain in February was followed by continuous days of sunshine and mild temperatures that made for uniform vines and even cluster growth. With no major heat spikes to contend with, there was no need to rush through harvest. Cooler temperatures allowed us to pick when we wanted, without stress and under optimal conditions. The gift from Mother Nature translated to wines that not only have great concentration but also an amazing freshness. ABOUT THE VINEYARD Our winemakers, influenced by their winemaking experience in the heralded region of Bordeaux, blended five distinct varietals most commonly used in Médoc in deliberate proportions for our Left Bank Napa Valley 2018. The Cabernet Sauvignon, the dominant grape in this wine, hails from a variety of appellations, including St. Helena, Rutherford, Atlas Peak, Oakville and Yountville. Each sub-AVA brings its own unique terroir and characteristics, thus allowing our winemakers to craft a wine with complex and rich aromatics and lingering flavors. Clos Du Val’s Estate Vineyards: Stags Leap, Carneros and Yountville For more than 40 years, Clos Du Val’s estate vineyards in Stags Leap District, Carneros and Yountville have been at the heart of the winery’s winemaking program. Located on some of the finest winegrowing land in Napa Valley, and farmed by Clos Du Val for decades, these three distinctive vineyards reflect the valley’s diversity, and provide a world-class palette of estate fruit for Winemaker Ted Henry. Beginning in 2014, Clos Du Val President Steve Tamburelli affirmed the winery’s commitment to the importance of this estate fruit when he transitioned Clos Du Val’s wines into being almost entirely estate-grown. Hirondelle Estate Vineyard, Stags Leap District, Napa Valley The crown jewel of Clos Du Val’s estate program is the 150-acre Hirondelle Estate Vineyard in the heart of Stags Leap District, in the eastern portion of Napa Valley. Originally acquired in 1972, this coveted land is also home to the Clos Du Val Winery. Often referred to as a “valley within a valley,” Stags Leap District was the first American Viticultural Area (AVA) in the United States to be approved based on the distinctiveness of its gravel and loam soils. The AVA, which is just three miles long, and one mile wide, is also celebrated for its ideal climate, which funnels cool breezes from San Pablo Bay through the Stags Leap District corridor. This lowers evening temperatures and allows the grapes to ripen slowly, producing velvety tannins and pure varietal flavors, while retaining ideal natural acidity—qualities that have proven perfect for making exceptional, age-worthy Cabernet Sauvignons.

2013 CABERNET SAUVIGNON NAPA VALLEY Release Date September, 2015 Production 568 Cases Appellation Napa Valley: Calistoga AVA, Rutherford AVA, Oakville AVA, Coombsville AVA & Howell Mountain AVA Varietal Composition 91% Cabernet Sauvignon, 6% Merlot, 3% Petit Verdot Winemaking Team Seana and Justin Hunnicutt Stephens, Proprietor Kirk P. Venge, Winemaker Cooperage Aged for 22 months in 100% French oak, 50% new Tasting Notes Our 2013 Napa Cab is a real beauty. Perfumed, almost feminine notes of strawberry and raspberry tart dance on the edge of the glass with darker cassis, black cherry and vanilla adding layers to the nose and hinting at the beast within. On the entry, volumes of supple bright cherry, plum and blueberry pie rush to the fore and linger well into the mid-palate. As the tannins begin to wash over and meld with the bright fruit notes, soft secondary flavors of milk chocolate and pie crust coat the palate and provide harmonious balance through the finish. This wine shows great promise and speaks well for 2013 as a year with great aging potential. While 2012 was a bombastic show stopper, 2013 will prove to be the nuanced genius plucking the right strings for years to come. Patience is a virtue, but then again, who needs virtue when great wine is waiting. Drink when you are ready, decant with vigor over the next 5 years and confidently enjoy to 2030.
