With an annual budget of up to 12.5M€ and 30% of the budget targeted towards SMEs and Academia, the MCM has become the cornerstone of future collaborative research and technology demonstration programmes for UK-French missile systems. Along with our teammates, BAE Systems and Northrop Grumman Space Technology, United Defense performed a series of technology investigations, conducted simulation-supported concept development and down-selected to a best value integrated survivability suite (ISS) consisting of an optimal mix of armor, electronic warfare sensors, processors and soft kill countermeasure, and hard kill active protection in November of 1998. At that point the program transitioned to a development and demonstration phase in which the United Defense led team designed and fabricated the selected survivability suite (ISS), integrated the ISS onto a customer-selected EMD version BFVA3 test-bed and conducted live threat defeat testing. Static testing against a wide array of live threats successfully concluded in September of 2002. By December of 02, the IAAPS team was back at the range with the test-bed reconfigured for on-the-move (OTM) testing. Successful OTM defeats were conducted with the soft kill countermeasure in January of 2003, with hard kill defeats conducted in February through May of 2003.

    Chief of Navy Essay Competition The Youth Division (MacDougall Prize) Civilians: The Fulcrum for a Modern Fleet “We need to think differently […] by reviewing our basic operating concepts, reimagining the way that Navy should view itself in the twenty-first century, re-examining our assumptions and, most importantly, re-engineering our modus operandi…”1 – Vice Admiral Tim Barrett AO CSC RAN On 3rd September 1939 Australia declared war on Germany and by 1941 was seeking innovative ways to sustain the war effort at sea. This need served as the genesis of two important augmentations to the Royal Australian Navy (RAN): the Women’s Royal Australian Naval Service (WRANS) in April2 and the Naval Auxiliary Patrol (NAP) that June3. This essay will briefly identify the role played by the aforementioned services in supplementing an RAN stretched for resources before identifying similar challenges in the Navy of today. It will then explore the possibility of rectifying this by increasing the use of civilian support across the RAN, such as through the introduction of a modern Australian Fleet Auxiliary. Spread across the globe, the RAN realised it would need to do everything it could to maximise the availability of her sailors and warships while continuing to maintain a suitable presence on the home front. For this reason, both the WRANS and NAP would target those not eligible to serve in conflict at sea. Officer Commanding Sydney Naval Establishments Commodore Muirhead-Gould was quoted by the Sydney Morning Herald on the 4th November 1941 as saying the NAP “would not release any member from any other kind of service under the laws of the Commonwealth” and that, while “applications for enrolment were being received from unmarried men under 35 […] these men could be enrolled in the patrol only if they were in reserve occupations or medically unfit”4.

This year’s release has been compiled in conjunction with the BIS Statistics - Analysis team. The document takes into account feedback from readers via a User Engagement survey. Our defence statistics relate to sales to overseas Ministries of Defence and associated Armed Services. This makes them customer‐based, rather than product-based. Security data is provided by a contractor called kMatrix, under a multi-year contract to UKTI DSO. All the information collected on the defence and security markets is vital to our understanding of the shape of the market and trends. It helps UKTI DSO in targeting support to all sections of the defence and security industries. 2 3 The global defence export market in 2014 is estimated to be valued at more than £50Bn ($83Bn). In an increasingly competitive global export market, the UK’s defence export total of £8.5Bn in 2014 is a considerable achievement, particularly coming off the back of major platform exports in 2013. UK defence companies enjoyed global success throughout 2014. Selected UK defence wins included Trent 700 engines for A330 Multi-Role Tanker Transport (MRTT) aircraft to France; Advanced Short Range Air-to-Air Missiles (ASRAMM) to India and the ForceShield Integrated Air Defence System plus Starstreak Missiles to Indonesia.
