Lakra Mumbai- 400 061, India ABSTRACT The State of West Bengal, India endowed with 158 km coast line for marine water resources with inshore, up-shore areas and continental shelf of Bay of Bengal form an important fishery resource and also possesses a rich wealth of indigenous marine ornamental fishes.The present study recorded a total of 113 marine ornamental fish species, belonging to 75 genera under 45 families and 10 orders.Order Perciformes is represented by a maximum of 26 families having 79 species under 49 genera followed by Tetraodontiformes (5 family; 9 genus and 10 species), Scorpaeniformes (2 family; 3 genus and 6 species), Anguilliformes (2 family; 3 genus and 4 species), Syngnathiformes (2 family; 3 genus and 3 species), Pleuronectiformes (2 family; 2 genus and 4 species), Siluriformes (2 family; 2 genus and 3 species), Beloniformes (2 family; 2 genus and 2 species), Lophiformes (1 family; 1 genus and 1 species), Beryciformes(1 family; 1 genus and 1 species). The most diverse order was perciformes with 175 species, 100 genera and 43 families. The top four families with the highest number of species were gobidae (28 species), carangidae (23 species), engraulidae (15 species) and lutjanidae (14 species). Conservation status of all taxa includes one species as endangered, five species as vulnerable, 14 near threatened, 93 least concern and 16 data deficient. As numbers of commercial, sports, ornamental and cultivable fishes are high, commercial and recreational fishing could be organized. Seed production by selective breeding is recommended for aquaculture practices in estuarine areas of Tamil Nadu. SINGH ICAR-Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute, Mumbai Research Centre, Fisheries University Road Versova, Andheri (W), Mumbai - 400 061, Maharashtra, India e-mail: [email protected] ABSTRACT Spotted seerfishScomberomorus guttatus (Bloch & Schneider, 1801) is one of the highly priced table fishes in India, which contributed 4.7% of all India scombrid fishery with 17,684 t landed in 2014. Its fishery is dominant in the Arabian Sea and northern Arabian Sea contributed 62% to India’s spotted seerfish fishery. Biological information on S. guttatus is scarce and the same was studied during the period 2010-2014 from Maharashtra coast, north-eastern Arabian Sea. A total of 930 specimens (185-550 mm FL) collected from commercial landings were used for the study. Length-weight relation of pooled sexes was estimated as log (W) = -3.1988+2.66074 log (L) (r2 = 0.93). Fishery was dominated by males with the sex ratio -1 of 0.76:1. Relative fecundity ranged from 105-343 eggs g of bodyweight. The length at first maturity (Lm) was estimated to be 410 mm TL for females. Mature and gravid females were dominant in May and August-November. Dietary studies (% IRI) showed dominance of Acetes spp. -

Technology adoption and infrastructure development has undoubtedly played a key role in this trend, but the emphasis from increasing production to sustaining the catches and from fisheries exploitation to fisheries management has also been tangible. -

An annotated list of the 63 species in 23 genera of carangid fishes known from Australian waters is presented. Included in these 63 are eight endemic species, eight new Australian records (Alepes vari, Carangoides equula, C. plagiotaenia, C. talamparoides, Caranx lugubris, Decapterus kurroides, D. tabl and Seriola rivoliana) and a new species in the genus Alepes. A generic key and specific keys to Alectis, Alepes, Carangoides, Scomberoides, Selar, Ulua and Uraspis are given. The systematics of the 32 Australian species of Alectis, Alepes, Atule, Carangoides, "Caranx", Elagatis, Gnathanodon,Megalaspis,Pantolabus, Scomberoides, Selar, Selaroides, Seriolina, Ulua and Uraspis are covered in detail. For each species a recommended common name, other common names, Australian secondary synonymy, diagnosis, colour notes, description, comparison with other species, maximum recorded size, ecological notes and distribution are given. Species Composition and Diversity of Fishes in the South China Sea, Area I: Gulf of Thailand and East Coast of Peninsular Malaysia
S4/FB3<CHAVALIT> Species composition and Diversity of Fishes in the South China Sea, Area I: Gulf of Thailand and East Coast of Peninsular Malaysia Chavalit Vidthayanon Department of Fisheries, Bangkok 10900, Thailand ABSTRACT The collaborative research on species composition and diversity of fishes in the Gulf of Thai- land and eastern Malay Peninsula was carried out by R. V. Pramong 4 in Thai waters and K.K. Manchong, K.K. Mersuji in Malaysian waters, through otter-board trawling surveys. Taxonomic surveys also done for commercial fishes in the markets of some localities. Totally 300 species from 18 orders and 89 families were obtained. Their diversity are drastically declined, compare to the previous survey from 380 species trawled. The station point of off Ko Chang, eastern Gulf of Thai- land and off Pahang River shown significantly high diversity of fishes57 and 73 species found. De- mersal species form the main composition of the catchs. The lizardfish Saurida undosquamis, S. miropectoralis, the bigeye Priacanthus tayenus and P. macracanthus, the rabbitfish Siganus canaliculatus and hairtail Trichiurus lepturus were the most abundant economic species found in mast of the sampling stations. Fishing efforts were 34 hours and 49 hours for the cruises I and II, with average catch per hour of 12.04 and 34.79 kg. respectively. The maximum catch per hour was 175.3 kg in Malaysian waters, the minimum was 4.33 kg in Thai waters. The average percentage of eco- nomic fishes is higher than that of trash fishes in Malaysian waters, it ranged from 55.45 to 81.92 %. -
