An annotated list of the 63 species in 23 genera of carangid fishes known from Australian waters is presented. Included in these 63 are eight endemic species, eight new Australian records (Alepes vari, Carangoides equula, C. plagiotaenia, C. talamparoides, Caranx lugubris, Decapterus kurroides, D. tabl and Seriola rivoliana) and a new species in the genus Alepes. A generic key and specific keys to Alectis, Alepes, Carangoides, Scomberoides, Selar, Ulua and Uraspis are given. The systematics of the 32 Australian species of Alectis, Alepes, Atule, Carangoides, "Caranx", Elagatis, Gnathanodon,Megalaspis,Pantolabus, Scomberoides, Selar, Selaroides, Seriolina, Ulua and Uraspis are covered in detail. For each species a recommended common name, other common names, Australian secondary synonymy, diagnosis, colour notes, description, comparison with other species, maximum recorded size, ecological notes and distribution are given. Specific primary synonymies are listed when the type locality is Australia or Papua New Guinea. Species Composition and Diversity of Fishes in the South China Sea, Area I: Gulf of Thailand and East Coast of Peninsular Malaysia
S4/FB3<CHAVALIT> Species composition and Diversity of Fishes in the South China Sea, Area I: Gulf of Thailand and East Coast of Peninsular Malaysia Chavalit Vidthayanon Department of Fisheries, Bangkok 10900, Thailand ABSTRACT The collaborative research on species composition and diversity of fishes in the Gulf of Thai- land and eastern Malay Peninsula was carried out by R. V. Pramong 4 in Thai waters and K.K. Manchong, K.K. Mersuji in Malaysian waters, through otter-board trawling surveys. Taxonomic surveys also done for commercial fishes in the markets of some localities. Totally 300 species from 18 orders and 89 families were obtained. Their diversity are drastically declined, compare to the previous survey from 380 species trawled. The station point of off Ko Chang, eastern Gulf of Thai- land and off Pahang River shown significantly high diversity of fishes57 and 73 species found. De- mersal species form the main composition of the catchs. The lizardfish Saurida undosquamis, S. miropectoralis, the bigeye Priacanthus tayenus and P. macracanthus, the rabbitfish Siganus canaliculatus and hairtail Trichiurus lepturus were the most abundant economic species found in mast of the sampling stations. Fishing efforts were 34 hours and 49 hours for the cruises I and II, with average catch per hour of 12.04 and 34.79 kg. respectively. The maximum catch per hour was 175.3 kg in Malaysian waters, the minimum was 4.33 kg in Thai waters. The average percentage of eco- nomic fishes is higher than that of trash fishes in Malaysian waters, it ranged from 55.45 to 81.92 %. -

Abstract: A total of 52 specimens of the Pacific seabream Acanthopagrus pacificus Iwatsuki, Kume et Yoshino from the Gulf of Tonkin off Vietnam were examined for monogeneans. Twenty fish were parasitised by 101 individuals of five monogenean species, including two known species Allodiscocotyla diacanthi Unnithan, 1962 and Heterapta chorinemi (Tripathi, 1956), as well as three new species, Polylabroides tienyenensis sp. n., Polylabroides tonkinensis sp. n. and Metacamopia lebedevi sp. n. Polylabroides tienyenensis and P. tonkinensis are morphologically more similar to Polylabroides guangdongensis Zhang et Yang, 2001 in comparison with other spe- cies within the genus, based on the absence of small spines on the cirrus. -

Read Full License Page 1/28 Abstract The Merbok Estuary comprises one of the largest remaining mangrove forests in Peninsular Malaysia. Its value is signicant as it provides both direct and indirect services to local and global communities. It also offers a unique opportunity to study the structure and functioning of mangrove ecosystems. However, its biodiversity is still partially described, limiting its research value. Recent inventories based on morphological examination, documented 138 sh species residing, frequenting or subject to entering the Merbok Estuary. Using a molecular approach, we assessed the sh diversity of the Merbok Estuary and its adjacent waters in DNA barcoding 350 specimens assignable to 135 species initially identied based on morphology. -

Abstract A checklist of shallow (to 60 m depth) reef fishes is provided for the Bird’s Head Peninsula region of West Papua, Indonesia. The area, which occupies the extreme western end of New Guinea, contains the world’s most diverse assemblage of coral reef fishes. The current checklist, which includes both historical records and recent survey results, includes 1,511 species in 451 genera and 111 families. Respective species totals for the three main coral reef areas – Raja Ampat Islands, Fakfak-Kaimana coast, and Cenderawasih Bay – are 1320, 995, and 877. In addition to its extraordinary species diversity, the region exhibits a remarkable level of endemism considering its relatively small area. A total of 26 species in 14 families are currently considered to be confined to the region. In this study, thirty- six species were collected from the main fish landing facilities between 2012~2015. Fish body colour, taxonomic characteristics, fin rays and otolith shape description were used to identify each species. Otolith description comprises of shape of ostium, sulcus and margins of anterior and posterior surface along with distinct definite shape possess by each species make it easier for identification. This species catalogue would treasure and latest information on the existing species of the family Carangidae in the area, and provide an ease to identification especially for closely resembling species. Background information Family Carangidae comprises 140 species and is widely distributed throughout the Western Indian Ocean and Western Pacific, from Japan to Australia and eastward to Fiji [1–3] (Table 1).
