This project is really beginning to take shape! The new pillar capitals have arrived. Each piece is carved of solid red oak in the exact same style as the existing furnishings. Now that these have arrived, our craftsman will begin to create the new candlesticks. He will carefully match the color of the stain to the existing furnishings. We will have more pictures as the project progresses! I first wrote about this project several weeks ago, you can view that article on the BLOCK weekly online newsletter. We are well on our way to having this project completely funded. Here is a breakdown of the costs/donations to date: Altar Candlestick Stand: $1,000 6 Floor-standing Altar Candles: $3,000 Update Funds raised to date (as of 2/20): -$1,855.50 Remaining Goal: $2,144.50 If you have not yet made a donation, there are two ways to contribute: 1) Purchase a hymnal dedication by filling out the form below. All funds from hymnal dedications will go toward this project. 2) Make an outright donation by dropping an envelope in the collection basket labeled “candlestick fundraiser”. We are aiming to have this project completed by April 20th, Easter Sunday. Any funds raised beyond our goal will be set aside for other liturgical improvements. 3 ADULT & CHILD CATECHESIS 30 HOUR FOOD FAST The following letter was written by a high school student to encourage others to participate in the 30 Hour Fast: Well it has been 22 ½ hours that I have gone without food. This has been quite an experience to say the least. Having participated in the fast this year, I can honestly say that it is very satisfying to know that by keeping the fast for 30 Hours, I have performed a service to God by standing in solidarity with my brothers and sisters around the world. So many people go hungry every year and by raising money and participating in the fast, I know what it feels like to be hungry, but I have also done something about it. I can share what I have learned through this experience with others and I can be proud that I donated my time, my experience, and my love to those people who have to live with hunger every day. Each day is such a struggle for some people and I am fortunate to have the resources that I do. Now that I have walked a day in their shoes, I can appreciate more fully the world around me. Good luck on doing the Fast! Bye for now!

FROM SATURDAY MARCH 9TH UNTIL SUNDAY MARCH 10TH St Ben, St Andrew and St. Edwards youth ministries are participating in a 30 Hour Fast to raise money, raise awareness and to pray for the hungry. If you are an 8th grade through high school age student and would like to participate, or a parishioner that would like to support the teens with a donation, please call Kim McMillan at the Rectory.

WHAT IS ALPHA? Alpha Youth Series is designed to engage students in conversations about life, faith and Jesus. Discussion time is interspersed throughout the short talks to make it simpler for everyone to share their thoughts and questions. The series offers compelling stories, images, questions, and discussion topics well spread throughout each episode to provide time and space to think about important issues. The discussions with friends and leaders help everyone grow in understanding. Alpha for Youth in the North Center area will begin on March 13th at 5:00pm and run until 6:30. We will meet for 10 weeks in the basement of St. Benedict Church. Attending all 10 weeks is encouraged but not mandatory. Participating in Alpha could be a great Lenten practice. Each night will begin with a meal. Bring a friend and Explore Alpha. Sign up here to find out more: http://bit.ly/AlphaExplore

On behalf of my wife (Julie) and I, we are truly honored to join the parish community at St. Ben’s. We first attended mass here last spring. Almost a year later, we will be welcoming the arrival of our first-born child. We are currently living in North Center, having relocated to Chicago in 2017, after a decade in Washington, DC. We were married at St. Joseph’s on Capitol Hill in 2016. I was born in metro Detroit to parents of Armenian Orthodox & Irish Catholic faiths respectively. My three brothers and I were all baptized at the St. Sarkis Armenian church, and made at St. John Fisher Chapel. I joined the RCIA DAN STEPANIAN-BENNETT program to complete the sacrament of Confirmation. At this point, faith in God has become a foundational part in my life. I am grateful to my sponsor, Bill Shaver who has inspired me on this journey. I am also forever appreciative of the RCIA team for their time, energy, and support of me along with my fellow catechumens and candidates. This team truly embodies the life and teachings of Jesus.

OFFICER FRIENDLY VISITS ST. BENEDICT PREP St. Benedict Prep students had a special visitor last week as part of the Chicago Police Department’s Officer Friendly program. Officer Matt Roben spoke to kindergarten through third grade students about behaviors that will help protect themselves and others. Topics included stranger awareness, street safety, and how to use the 911 emergency system. The program is designed to help students and their community develop a friendly relationship with police. Thank you Officer Roben.

3RD GRADE READER’S THEATER St. Benedict Prep third graders presented Reader’s Theater to a group of elders from the Kateri Center recently. Students researched Native American culture and learned how stories have been passed down orally through tradition. Fairytales and legends were presented and both the students and elders participated in a group discussion afterward. Mrs. Elaine Lindia, St. Benedict Pastoral Associate, and Kateri Center's Jody Roy facilitated the event and worked with the third grade teachers on this Service Learning project.

A St. Joseph Altar is an offering of love, labor and sacrifice in honor of the Patron Saint of the Universal Church. According to legend the St. Joseph Altar originated in Sicily, many centuries ago during a period of drought and famine. In desperation, the people turned to St. Joseph asking his help and intercession. When the rains came and the crops prospered, their prayers were answered. In thanksgiving, the community made offerings to St. Joseph of their most prized possession, food!
