February 14/15, 2021 The Transfiguration of our Lord

Redeemer Lutheran Church and 3K/4K Preschool 1712 Menasha Ave. Manitowoc, Wisconsin (920) 684-3989 www.redeemermanty.com

Welcome

I was glad when they said to me, “Let us go to the house of the LORD!” Psalm 122:1

Please maintain distancing.

When we distribute Holy the entire /right side of the sanctuary will be communed followed then by the left side of the church.

DO NOT fill out a Communion card.

For the time being we will practice “Continuous Communion.” What that means is that while we will still line up down the main aisle one person at a time will take Communion. You will receive the host and then receive the cup. After that you will return to your seat as normal.

Through all of this we remember, especially when we gather for worship:

This is the day that the LORD has made; let us rejoice and be glad in it! Psalm 118:24

Prayer Before Worship O Lord, my creator, redeemer, and comforter, as I come to worship You in spirit and in truth, I humbly pray that You would open my heart to the preaching of Your Word so that I may repent of my sins, believe in Jesus Christ as my only Savior, and grow in grace and holiness. Hear me for the sake of His name. Amen.

Prayer Before Communing Dear Savior, at Your gracious invitation I come to Your table to eat and drink Your holy body and blood. Let me find favor in Your eyes to receive this holy Sacrament in faith for the salvation of my soul and to the glory of Your holy name; for You live and reign with the Father and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen

Thanksgiving after receiving the Sacrament Almighty and everlasting God, I thank and praise You for feeding me the life-giving body and blood of Your beloved Son, Jesus Christ. Send Your Holy Spirit that, having with my mouth received the holy Sacrament, I may by faith obtain and eternally enjoy Your divine grace, the forgiveness of sins, unity with Christ, and life eternal; through Jesus Christ, my Lord. Amen.

Opening Hymn: 414 'Tis Good, Lord, to Be Here

10:00 A.M. Dedication and Blessing of Candles and Flower Stands

Invocation P In the name of the Father and of the T Son and of the Holy Spirit. The may be made by all in remembrance of their Baptism. C Amen.

Confession and Absolution P If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. C But if we confess our sins, God, who is faithful and just, will forgive our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

3

(A moment of silence for self-examination)

P Let us then confess our sins to God our Father. C Most merciful God, we confess that we are by nature sinful and unclean. We have sinned against You in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done and by what we have left undone. We have not loved You with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. We justly deserve Your present and eternal punishment. For the sake of Your Son, Jesus Christ, have mercy on us. Forgive us, renew us, and lead us, so that we may delight in Your will and walk in Your ways to the glory of Your holy name. Amen.

P Almighty God in His mercy has given His Son to die for you and for His sake forgives you all your sins. As a called and ordained servant of Christ, and by His authority, I therefore forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the T Son and of the Holy Spirit. C Amen.

Gloria

Prayer of the Day P The Lord be with you. C And also with you. P Let us Pray…O God, in the glorious transfiguration of Your beloved Son You confirmed the mysteries of the faith by the testimony of Moses and Elijah. In the voice that came from the bright cloud You wonderfully foreshowed our adoption by grace. Mercifully make us co-heirs with the King in His glory and bring us to the fullness of our inheritance in heaven; through the same Jesus Christ, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. C Amen.

Old Testament Reading: Exodus 34:29-35 When Moses came down from Mount Sinai, with the two tablets of the testimony in his hand as he came down from the mountain, Moses did not know that the skin of his face shone because he had been talking with God. Aaron and all the people of Israel saw Moses, and behold, the skin of his face shone, and they were afraid to come near him. But Moses called to them, and Aaron and all the leaders of the congregation returned to him, and Moses talked with them. Afterward all the people of Israel came near, and he commanded them all that the Lord had spoken with him in Mount Sinai. And when Moses had finished speaking with them, he put a over his face. Whenever Moses went in before the Lord to speak with him, he would remove the veil, until he came out. And when he came out and told the people of Israel what he was commanded, the people of Israel would see the face of Moses, that the skin of Moses'

7 face was shining. And Moses would put the veil over his face again, until he went in to speak with him. P This is the Word of the Lord. C Thanks be to God.

Epistle Reading: II Corinthians 3:12-4:6 Since we have such a hope, we are very bold, not like Moses, who would put a veil over his face so that the Israelites might not gaze at the outcome of what was being brought to an end. But their minds were hardened. For to this day, when they read the old covenant, that same veil remains unlifted, because only through Christ is it taken away. Yes, to this day whenever Moses is read a veil lies over their hearts. But when one turns to the Lord, the veil is removed. Now the Lord is the Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom. And we all, with unveiled face, beholding the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from one degree of glory to another. For this comes from the Lord who is the Spirit. Therefore, having this ministry by the mercy of God, we do not lose heart. But we have renounced disgraceful, underhanded ways. We refuse to practice cunning or to tamper with God's word, but by the open statement of the truth we would commend ourselves to everyone's conscience in the sight of God. And even if our is veiled, it is veiled to those who are perishing. In their case the god of this world has blinded the minds of the unbelievers, to keep them from seeing the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God. For what we proclaim is not ourselves, but Jesus Christ as Lord, with ourselves as your servants for Jesus' sake. For God, who said, “Let light shine out of darkness,” has shone in our hearts to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ. P This is the Word of the Lord. C Thanks be to God.

Mark 9:2-9 P The Holy Gospel according to St. Mark, the 9th chapter. C Glory to You, O Lord. And after six days Jesus took with him Peter and James and John, and led them up a high mountain by themselves. And he was transfigured before them, and his clothes became radiant, intensely white, as no one on earth could bleach them. And there appeared to them Elijah with Moses, and they were talking with Jesus. And Peter said to Jesus, “Rabbi, it is good that we are here. Let us make three tents, one for you and one for Moses and one for Elijah.” For he did not know what to say, for they were terrified. And a cloud overshadowed them, and a voice came out of the cloud, “This is my beloved Son; listen to him.” And suddenly, looking around, they no longer saw anyone with them but Jesus only. And as they were coming down the mountain, he charged them to tell no one what they had seen, until the Son of Man had risen from the dead. P This is the Gospel of the Lord. C Praise to You, O Christ.

Sermon

9

Nicene Creed C I believe in one God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth and of all things visible and invisible. And in one Lord Jesus Christ, the only-begotten Son of God, begotten of His Father before all worlds, God of God, Light of Light, very God of very God, begotten, not made, being of one substance with the Father, by whom all things were made; who for us men and for our salvation came down from heaven and was incarnate by the Holy Spirit of the virgin Mary and was made man; and was crucified also for us under Pontius Pilate. He suffered and was buried. And the third day He rose again according to the Scriptures and ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of the Father. And He will come again with glory to judge both the living and the dead, whose kingdom will have no end. And I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord and giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son together is worshiped and glorified, who spoke by the prophets. And I believe in one holy Christian and apostolic Church, I acknowledge one Baptism for the remission of sins, and I look for the resurrection of the dead and the life T of the world to come. Amen.

Prayer of the Church P Lord, in your mercy, C hear our prayer.

+Liturgy of the Sacrament+ P The Lord be with you. 2 Timothy 4:22 C And also with you.

P Lift up your hearts. Colossians 3:1 C We lift them to the Lord.

P Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. Psalm 136 C It is right to give Him thanks and praise.

P It is truly good, right, and salutary that we should at all times and in all places give thanks to You, holy Lord, almighty Father, everlasting God, through Jesus Christ, our Lord, who at His transfiguration revealed His glory to His disciples that they might be strengthened to proclaim His cross and resurrection and with all the faithful look forward to the glory of life everlasting. Therefore with angels and archangels and with all the company of heaven we laud and magnify Your glorious name, evermore praising You and singing:

12

P As the glory of Your presence once filled Your ancient temple, so in the incarnation of Your Son, Jesus Christ, You manifested the fullness of Your glory in human flesh. We give You thanks that in His most Holy Supper You reveal Your glory to us. Grant us faithfully to eat His body and drink His blood so that we may one day behold Your glory face to face.

Words of Institution

Proclamation of Christ P As often as we eat this bread and drink this cup, we proclaim the Lord’s death until He comes. C Amen. Come, Lord Jesus.

Lord’s Prayer P Lord, remember us in Your Kingdom and teach us to pray: C Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name, Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven; give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever. Amen.

Pax Domini P The peace of the Lord be with you always. C And also with you.

Statement on Holy Communion The Lord’s Supper is joyfully received here every weekend and on other holy days. At the altar, our Lord Jesus Christ delivers His true body and blood into our mouths. His gift of body and blood, given in, with, and under the bread and wine, bestows tremendous benefits. His body and blood forgives our sins, strengthens our faith, binds us to the Lord, and unites us with each other. In this is life and salvation.

All members of the Lutheran Church–Missouri Synod have publicly confessed this sacred gift and its blessings, and so are encouraged to commune. Other guests wishing to join our confession and receive this Holy Sacrament are asked to meet with a pastor before communing for the first time. When you have examined yourself according to Christ’s bidding (1 Corinthians 11:17-34), come to His Supper rejoicing, just as Jesus asks, knowing that our Lord meets you at His altar with joy. Those coming to the altar for a blessing rather than the Holy Supper are asked to cross their arms over their chest.

Now Hiring After many years of faithful service, our custodian Glenn Gass, is moving on. We are grateful for his years of service, but with his last day being March 10th we need to move quickly.

If you or someone you know is looking for approximately 15- 20 hours a week of work with flexible hours please talk to Pastor DeArmond or a member of the Executive Board. Our hope would be to find someone before Glenn leaves in March, so he can show them some of what he does.

If you would like a copy of the job description or have any questions please contact Pastor DeArmond.

SLEDDING Join Family Ministry for SLEDDING February 20th from 10:00- 11:00 a.m. at Wilson Middle school. Weather and snow permitting. Any questions, contact Beth Utecht 952-240-4817.

They can be picked up outside of the sanctuary or if you would like them delivered to your house please let the church office know.

Executive Board Openings Please see February newsletter for changes to the Executive Board structure. The current Executive Board is confident this modified Executive Board structure reflects the needs of our church today, and it is really formalization of how our Board has been operating the past few years. We are currently looking to fill three positions on the board:

Executive Board Member - Director of Spiritual Growth, Executive Board Member – Director of Education, and Executive Board member.

We ask you to prayerfully consider your personal gifts and abilities and the possibility of serving in one of these open Executive Board Positions. I encourage you to reach out to Pastor DeArmond or any member of the Executive Board with any questions you may have to help you with your decision.

Preschool Registration 2021-22 preschool registration is now open! Forms are available in the office and online. If you know anyone interested in preschool, please pass along this information. Please contact the preschool director Patti Fellows if you have any questions regarding preschool.
