Collection Description Biographical Note Atticus Greene Haygood, Methodist bishop and educator, was born November 19, 1839, in Watkinsville, Georgia, the son of Greene Berry Haygood, a lawyer, and Martha Askew Haygood and died January 19, 1896, in Oxford, Georgia. Ordained in 1858, Haygood served as a chaplain for the Confederate army during the Civil War; was appointed editor of the Methodist Episcopal Church, South's Sunday school publications (1870); and served as president of Emory College (1875-1884), where he introduced the teaching of modern languages, law, and business courses. He edited the Wesleyan Christian Advocate (1878-1884); was appointed the first agent for the John F. Slater Fund for Negro Education in the South (1882); was elected bishop (1890); served the Los Angeles Conference of the Methodist Episcopal Church, South; wrote more than thirteen books (1872-1895); and was a chief spokesman for the "New South" doctrine. Scope and Content Note The collection consists of the materials relating to Atticus G. Haygood and the Haygood family from 1861-1952. The papers relating to Atticus G. Haygood include loose and bound clippings of writings by and about him, a small amount of correspondence, his Civil War chaplain pass, sermons/addresses, and photographs. The collection also contains genealogical materials about the Haygood family, and the related families of Trotti, Thompson, Stroud, and Robison. The materials include bible records, family registers, photographs, correspondence, and genealogies. The family papers also include a composition book of Laura Askew Haygood (1843-1900), Bishop Haygood's sister, who was an educator and Methodist missionary to China.
