Georgetown University Washington, D.C. March 31, 2014 CONVERT BUT NOT CONVERTED: THE WESTERN LIVES OF AMERICAN MISSIONARY WOMEN IN CHINA (1860-1920) Caroline Hearn Fuchs, M.I.A. MALS Mentor: Kazuko Uchimura, Ph.D. ABSTRACT Kate Roberts Hearn was buried in a Shanghai cemetery in 1891, a short four years after her acceptance into the Women’s Missionary Service of the Methodist Episcopal Church, South. In 1873, Charlotte “Lottie” Moon left for a new life in China as a single missionary woman. She served in that country for nearly 40 years, dying aboard ship on a final return voyage to the United States. Both women left their American homes expecting to convert the people of an alien land to Christianity. They also arrived in China prepared to maintain their Western rituals and comforts, which effectively separated them from the Chinese and cultivated a sense of the “Other.” In this way, missionary women came to convert, but were not converted themselves. Missionary communities, specifically missionary women, vigorously sought to maintain domestic and work lifestyles anchored in Western culture. The rise of “domesticity” in the nineteenth century gave women an influential role as a graceful redeemer, able to transform “heathens” by demonstrating civilized values of a Christian home, complete with Western elements of cleanliness, companionable marriage, and the paraphernalia of Victorian life, such as pianos in the parlor. -

Chapter One Introduction to the Study In the spring of 1989, a 9-year-old boy was gunned down in the streets of a major city in The United States. The horror of this homicide was that both the victim and the assailant were children. During the 1980s this city, like most other large urban cities, was besieged by a growing number of violent acts: assaults, thefts, rapes, homicides, suicides, hate crimes, extortions, and destructions of property, but the murder of this young child became the catalyst which propelled specific action. In this case, a community educational organization called The Cottage Family and Child Care Center, which is the subject of this study, was created. Curcio and First (1993) write that “we can do more than just cope” in our “efforts to proactively defuse and prevent violence” (p. 50). As an antidote to growing violence in our schools and communities, they support the concept of community involvement and the relatively new notion of full-service schools (p. 35). School-linked services, full-service schools, or school community connections are terms which have been surfacing during the last decade and mean different things to people, depending upon their background and experience. While recognizing the semantic challenge that exists and the diversity of actual program designs represented by these terms, some commonality is beginning to surface in the literature. Adler (1994) identifies a number of common threads that weave through various definitions of school-linked or community-linked services: neighborhood accessibility, collaboration for holistic purposes, prevention rather than crises orientation, new systems, flexibility of funding, staff development, and system-wide changes (p. -

The thesis describes empirical, exploratory research into the nature, operant practice and understanding of superintendency which was focused on the Newcastle upon Tyne District of the Methodist Church during 2011-2012. -

New Zealand was an early emulator of British prostitution regulations, which provoked an organised repeal campaign in the 1880s, yet the colony is seldom considered in these debates. Tracing the dialogue concerning the repeal of contagious diseases legislation between British and New Zealand feminists in the 1890s, this article reaffirms the salience of political developments in the settler colonies for metropolitan reformers. A close reading of these interactions, catalysed by the Auckland Women’s Liberal League’s endorsement of the Act in 1895, reveals recently enfranchised New Zealand women’s desire to act as model citizens for the benefit of metropolitan suffragists. Drawing on slave narratives, ex-slave interviews, Civil War court-martials, Congressional testimonies, organizational minutes and conference proceedings, A Crusade takes an intersectional and subaltern approach to the era that has received extreme scholarly attention as the early women’s rights movement to understand the concerns of marginalized women around the sexualized topic of virtue. I argue that enslaved and free black women pioneered a women’s rights framework around sexual autonomy and consent through their radical engagement with the traditionally conservative and racially-exclusionary ideals of chastity and female virtue of the Victorian-era. -

Hannah Kilham and Gender Issues HANNAH KILHAM AND GENDER ISSUES: THE PLACE OF FEMALES IN THE LIBERATED AFRICAN VILLAGES OF SIERRA LEONE Victor Zizer Abstract: This paper examines how Kilham and her educational approach for Africans contributed to redefine the place of females in the Christianisation process of Liberated Africans in Sierra Le- one. The paper investigates some of the Colonial Government poli- cies for Liberated Africans in 19th century Sierra Leone to see how they served to define the place of females in the Liberated African villages. Various groups and individuals offered different forms of intervention to mitigate their challenges. Hannah Kilham, a 19th century English Quaker, was one such person who was committed to the cause of the Liberated Africans in Sierra Leone. She, like other agents, believed that education played a major role to intro- duce Christianity to Africans and to promote acceptable commerce among them. Unlike them, she maintained that for education to be meaningful to Africans, it must be offered through the medium of their own languages. Kilham’s approach contributed to the work of other agencies and directed them to the significance of focusing on girls’ education Key Words: Friend; Inward light; Liberated; Native; Indigenous; Quaker; Kilhamite. Introduction The British colonial settlement at Sierra Leone offers a desirable reference point to begin a discussion on Gender issues in the history of Missions in West Africa in the 19th century. Established in 1787 as a new home for freed slaves, Sierra Leone became known for three groups of emigrants: the “Black Poor”,1 the Nova Scotians and Maroons,2 and the Liberated Africans. -

BOWMER, M.A., B.D., Ph.D. Volume XXXIX October 1973 CAPTAIN THOMAS WEBB RETURNS To John Street Church, New York N Sunday, 3rd June 1973, Captain Thomas Webb returned to John Street United Methodist church, New York, in the 0 form of two physical trophies closely tied in to the concluding years of his life. The first was the memorial tablet which had been mounted in Portland Chapel, Bristol, soon after his death. The other was the original pastel portrait executed by Lewis Vasiet a few years before the Captain's decease.1 During his last years Thomas \V ebb lived in Bristol. He and his wife were very active in Methodist affairs-members of the society at John Wesley's chapel in the heart of the city-" The New Room in the Horsefair ".2 They appear to have resided in or near Portland Avenue, in the south·western sector of the city. The Captain be came convinced that a strong new society should be organized in the vicinity, and that a chapel could be provided for their worship. He gave himself sedulously to the project, securing an excellent site and erecting a chapel in Portland Place, although he himself could no longer make the financial contribution that his heart could have wished.8 Captain Webb died on 2oth December 1796, and was buried in Portland Chapel-in a vault below the recess in the sanctuary where stood the communion table.
