They will act as your host throughout the holiday and be available to answer your questions whilst conducting tours during the day or when socialising in the evenings. On larger tours they will also be accompanied by a tour manager who will take care of all administrative matters. Your Fellow Guests Your Fellow Guests will typically be a refreshing and diverse group of individuals and couples from a wide range of backgrounds and professions. No special prior knowledge is assumed or required – just a general interest in the subject. Whilst respecting individual privacy, we work hard to make everyone feel welcome – and normally find the group quickly comes together in a very informal and inclusive way. For this reason, we typically restrict the size of our groups to between 6 - 22 people – which also means we have more flexibility in finding good accommodation and restaurants for you. Food & Accommodation Most of our tours are on a half-board basis i.e. the tour price includes a good breakfast before setting out each day and in the evenings we all get together in our hotel or local restaurant for a three-course cooked meal (usually based on regional specialities) with coffee and wine included and will be hosted by your tour manager and historian. You will be accommodated in the best hotels available, and wherever possible hotels which have a historic connection to the heritage and events we are covering, and/or which are representative of the style and culture of the region will be used. Single travellers will be accommodated in a double room for sole occupancy. 4 Visit www.theculturalexperience.com Call 0345 475 1815 WHAT TO EXPECT Your Transportation We use modern, comfortable and spacious air-conditioned coaches. We make regular stops during the day to view the ground, walk to our various stands, grab a coffee/beer and of course for lunch. All rail journeys are either Standard Premier (Eurostar) or First Class (TGV). Unless otherwise stated all flights are from London Heathrow. What’s Included We provide a complete package in additional to food and accommodation, the tour price includes flights, trains, coaches and entrance fees to sites and attractions as detailed in each itinerary. You will also receive a welcome drink, pre tour booklet, leather luggage label, access to our new mobile app and a dedicated Tour Manager. Subject to availability we can lengthen your holiday, or combine it with another, by extending your flight dates, booking the extra accommodation and making other ground arrangements. We can arrange pre and post tour hotels and regional flights to the tour departure airport. Short-haul flights can usually be upgraded to business class and long-haul to either first or business class. Often it is possible to provide connecting flights from Manchester and other regional airports to worldwide destinations. Please enquire when you book. In 1879, the Dual Alliance emerged: Germany and Austria a. Bismarck sought to thwart Russian expansion. b. • When Fear Is Substituted for Reason: European and Western Government Policies Regarding National Security 1789-1919
WHEN FEAR IS SUBSTITUTED FOR REASON: EUROPEAN AND WESTERN GOVERNMENT POLICIES REGARDING NATIONAL SECURITY 1789-1919 Norma Lisa Flores A Dissertation Submitted to the Graduate College of Bowling Green State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY December 2012 Committee: Dr. Beth Griech-Polelle, Advisor Dr. Mark Simon Graduate Faculty Representative Dr. Michael Brooks Dr. Geoff Howes Dr. Michael Jakobson © 2012 Norma Lisa Flores All Rights Reserved iii ABSTRACT Dr. Beth Griech-Polelle, Advisor Although the twentieth century is perceived as the era of international wars and revolutions, the basis of these proceedings are actually rooted in the events of the nineteenth century. When anything that challenged the authority of the state – concepts based on enlightenment, immigration, or socialism – were deemed to be a threat to the status quo and immediately eliminated by way of legal restrictions. Once the façade of the Old World was completely severed following the Great War, nations in Europe and throughout the West started to revive various nineteenth century laws in an attempt to suppress the outbreak of radicalism that preceded the 1919 revolutions. What this dissertation offers is an extended understanding of how nineteenth century government policies toward radicalism fostered an environment of increased national security during Germany’s 1919 Spartacist Uprising and the 1919/1920 Palmer Raids in the United States. Using the French Revolution as a starting point, this study allows the reader the opportunity to put events like the 1848 revolutions, the rise of the First and Second Internationals, political fallouts, nineteenth century imperialism, nativism, Social Darwinism, and movements for self-government into a broader historical context.

The blockade has received modest attention in the historiography of the First World War, despite the assertion in the British official history that extreme privation and hunger resulted in more than 750,000 German civilian deaths.

It is certain that the people in the occupied cities of Lille, Roubaix, and Tourcoing received less news than before the occupation, and most of the news they did receive came from an untrusted source, namely the German occupiers. However, research for this dissertation reveals that the cities at the urban heart of northern France, Lille, Roubaix, and Tourcoing, received more news than historians previously have believed. Research for this dissertation comprised of reviewing all the sources available in Lille, Roubaix, and Tourcong during the occupation, which included German-controlled newspapers produced in France and Belgium, a short-lived clandestine press, and newspapers published outside the occupied zone covertly imported into the cities.
