The School of Salamanca: A Case of Global Knowledge Production Max Planck Studies in Global Legal History of the Iberian Worlds Editor Thomas Duve The book volumes in the Max Planck Studies in Global Legal History of the Iberian Worlds publish research on legal history of areas which have been in contact with the Iberian empires during the early Modern and Modern period, in Europe, the Americas, Asia and Africa. Its focus is global in the sense that it is not limited to the imperial spaces as such but rather looks at the globalization of normativities within the space related to these imperial formations. It is global also in another sense: The volumes in the series pay special attention to the coexistence of a variety of normativities and their cultural translations in different places and moments, decentring classical research perspectives and opening up for different modes of normativity. The Lutheran Reformation Then and Now The 500th anniversary of the Reformation isn't important just for confessional Lutherans. Lutheranism in general is celebrating its 500th birthday. Other denominations are also participating. Even the Roman Catholic Church is joining the jubilee (albeit with some reservations). In Germany the anniversary was ceremonially started on October 31st, 2016 in Berlin by ecclesiastical and political representatives. Federal President Joachim Gauck expressed appreciation for the changes which have arisen from the Reformation. In many respects even the state was shaped by the Reformation.1 But is this birthday party — organized in a way that is very effective from a PR perspective —at all legitimate? Luther's posting of the Theses is often portrayed by the media as a legend.2 Even the Evangelical Church of Germany (EKD) speaks of the important event as a "protestant founding myth."3 But the posting of the Theses isn't a legend. Historical evidence for example can be found in a letter of Luther to Archbishop Albrecht dating October 31st, 1517. In it Luther mentions the 95 Theses. Obviously the theses were originally attached to the letter, although they weren't discovered in the archives.4 But is it enough to commemorate an event which happened 500 years ago like we otherwise observe anniversaries or birthdays — by having a nice celebration? Luther himself probably would protest the loudest, if we celebrate this anniversary elaborately without asking what Luther and the Reformation were all about. If we really want to celebrate the anniversary in accordance with the wishes of Luther and our Lutheran fathers, we need to ask about their actual concerns and motives. -

After parish ministry in Adelaide, he taught in the field of historical and systematic theology at the former Luther Seminary, Adelaide, then at Tabor-Adelaide, and now serves as senior researcher with the research arm of Australian Lutheran College, the Australian Lutheran Institute for Theology and Ethics (ALITE). The story is well known among Protestants. When Pope Leo X learned of the dispute surrounding Luther’s 95 theses he mistakenly dismissed it as a monastic squabble.1 There is strong evidence, however, that while the Reformation of the sixteenth century proved to be ultimately much more than a monastic dispute, in its earliest phases much of what occurred can best be understood in light of the complexities of the inter-monastic rivalry between the Augustinians and Dominicans. A History of the Reformation of the 16Th Century

Biggs State of Europe before the Reformation The history of the Reformation should be of interest not only to Christians, but to the whole world. For the Reformation of the 16th century was nothing less that the restoration and reestablishment of the gospel hope of primitive Christianity. The Reformation was a restoration of the gospel of grace, whereby men heard once again the good news that the Sovereign God saves by grace through faith in Jesus Christ. The message of the Reformation was recovered for a sinful and lost world to once again have hope in Christ alone. We should acknowledge that the Reformation happened through weak and sinful men who were seeking biblical truth in an age of spiritual degeneration, but we must remember that the Reformation was primarily a work of God’s Sovereign providence over, upon and in history. The God of the Bible is a historical God who works in history through weak and sinful men to accomplish his purposes all to the praise of his glorious grace! The very incarnation of Christ is the greatest display of not only God’s love for his people, but that He is a God that enters into history to save. Three Kinds of Religion in the History of Mankind When considering the history of the Reformation it is important to distinguish between primitive Christianity or Catholicism and the spiritually degenerate Popery or Roman Catholicism of the Medieval Period. The Reformation was essentially a restoration of Biblical, Apostolic, Catholic Christianity; the one true faith revealed in Scripture and entrusted to sinful and weak men to pass down and make known to the next 2 generation. -

Ninety-Five Theses
Ninety-five Theses The Ninety-five Theses or Disputation on the Power and Efficacy of Indulgences[a] is a list of propositions for an academic disputation written in 1517 by Martin Luther, professor of moral theology at the University of Wittenberg, Germany. They advance Luther's positions against Ninety-five Theses what he saw as the abuse of the practice of clergy selling plenary indulgences, which were certificates believed to reduce the temporal punishment in purgatory for sins committed by the purchasers or their loved ones. In the Theses, Luther claimed that the repentance required by Christ in order for sins to be forgiven involves inner spiritual repentance rather than merely external sacramental confession. He argued that indulgences led Christians to avoid true repentance and sorrow for sin, believing that they could forgo it by purchasing an indulgence. These indulgences, according to Luther, discouraged Christians from giving to the poor and performing other acts of mercy, believing that indulgence certificates were more spiritually valuable. Though Luther claimed that his positions on indulgences accorded with those of the Pope, the Theses challenge a 14th-century papal bull stating that the pope could use the treasury of merit and the good deeds of past saints to forgive temporal punishment for sins. The Theses are framed as propositions to be argued in debate rather than necessarily representing Luther's opinions, but Luther later clarified his views in the Explanations of the Disputation Concerning the Value of Indulgences. Luther sent the Theses enclosed with a letter to Albert of Brandenburg, Archbishop of Mainz, on 31 October 1517, a date now considered the start of the Reformation and commemorated annually as Reformation Day. -
