    MEDIA RELEASE AsiaSat 8 Successfully Lifts Off Hong Kong, 5 August 2014 – AsiaSat 8 aboard a SpaceX Falcon 9 launch vehicle successfully lifted off from the Cape Canaveral Air Force Station in Florida, U.S.A. at Hong Kong Time 4:00 p.m. (4:00 a.m. EDT or Cape Canaveral local time) on the 5th of August. The spacecraft successfully separated from the launch vehicle 32 minutes after liftoff. AsiaSat has acquired the first signals from the satellite in Hong Kong 54 minutes after launch. Over the next few days, AsiaSat 8 will move into the geostationary orbit, some 36,000 km above the Equator. “We are excited that the AsiaSat 8 launch has achieved this significant milestone. This is our first launch with SpaceX, we would like to thank them for their excellent work and effort in making today’s launch a success. In the coming weeks, we will work closely with Space Systems/Loral, our long-term partner, on the post-launch maneuvers and in-orbit testing of AsiaSat 8,” said William Wade, President and Chief Executive Officer of AsiaSat. “The addition of AsiaSat 8 to our existing fleet of four in-orbit satellites will expand our fleet capacity and enable us to serve a wider range of customers for advanced satellite services, from DTH, data broadcasting to broadband services.” AsiaSat 8 is a Space Systems/Loral 1300 series satellite, and has a design life of 15 years. With 24 Ku-band transponders and a Ka-band payload, AsiaSat 8 will co-locate with AsiaSat 7, where AsiaSat has established networks for service since 1990.

Wilmore (Captain, U.S. Navy) is a veteran of two spaceflights and has accumulated a total of 178 days in space. He is currently training as Commander of the 1st flight of the Boeing Starliner spacecraft scheduled for launch in the fall of 2021. In September 2014, Wilmore launched aboard a Russian Soyuz rocket as a member of Expedition 41. He served as a Flight Engineer until November when he assumed command of the station upon arrival of the Expedition 42 crew. He returned to Earth in March 2015. During this mission, he logged 167 days in space and performed four spacewalks totaling 25 hours, 36 minutes. In 2009, Wilmore served as a pilot aboard Space Shuttle Atlantis for STS-129, traveling 4.5 million miles in 171 orbits. Wilmore is from Mt. Juliet, Tennessee and earned degrees from Tennessee Technological University and the University of Tennessee. He is a captain in the U.S. Navy. Personal Data: Wilmore is married to the former Miss Deanna Newport of Helenwood, Tennessee and they have two daughters. He was raised in Mt. Juliet, Tennessee where his parents Eugene and Faye Wilmore still reside. His brother Jack and family reside in Franklin, Tennessee. Education: Mount Juliet High School, Mount Juliet, Tennesee. Bachelor of Science and Master of Science in Electrical Engineering, Tennessee Technological University. Master of Science in Aviation Systems, University of Tennessee. Based on orbital data in ESA’s DISCOS database and on orbital data provided by KIAM the situation near the geostationary ring is analysed. From 1523 objects for which orbital data are available (of which 0 are outdated, i.e. the last available state dates back to 180 or more days before the reference date), 519 are actively controlled, 795 are drifting above, below or through GEO, 189 are in a libration orbit and 19 are in a highly inclined orbit. For 1 object the status could not be determined. Furthermore, there are 59 uncontrolled objects without orbital data (of which 54 have not been cata- logued). Thus the total number of known objects in the geostationary region is 1582.
