Email: [email protected], fbrusa@ fcnym.unlp.edu.ar, [email protected] Abstract This contribution summarizes knowledge of organisms associated with apple snails, mainly Pomacea spp., either in a facultative or obligate manner, paying special attention to diseases transmitted via these snails to humans. A wide spectrum of epibionts on the shell and operculum of snails are discussed. Among them algae, ciliates, rotifers, nematodes, flatworms, oligochaetes, dipterans, bryozoans and leeches are facultative, benefitting from the provision of substrate, transport, access to food and protection. Among obligate symbionts, five turbellarian species of the genusTemnocephala are known from the branchial cavity, with T. iheringi the most common and abundant. The leech Helobdella ampullariae also spends its entire life cycle inside the branchial cavity; two copepod species and one mite are found in different sites inside the snails. Details of the nature of the relationships of these specific obligate symbionts are poorly known. Also, extensive studies of an intracellular endosymbiosis are summarized. Apple snails are the first or second hosts of several digenean species, including some bird parasites.A number of human diseases are transmitted by apple snails, angiostrongyliasis being the most important because of the potential seriousness of the disease. THE WHITE HOUSE Office of the Press Secretary For Immediate Release December 28, 2016 ESTABLISHMENT OF THE BEARS EARS NATIONAL MONUMENT - - - - - - - BY THE PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA A PROCLAMATION Rising from the center of the southeastern Utah landscape and visible from every direction are twin buttes so distinctive that in each of the native languages of the region their name is the same: Hoon'Naqvut, Shash Jáa, Kwiyagatu Nukavachi, Ansh An Lashokdiwe, or "Bears Ears." For hundreds of generations, native peoples lived in the surrounding deep sandstone canyons, desert mesas, and meadow mountaintops, which constitute one of the densest and most significant cultural landscapes in the United States. Abundant rock art, ancient cliff dwellings, ceremonial sites, and countless other artifacts provide an extraordinary archaeological and cultural record that is important to us all, but most notably the land is profoundly sacred to many Native American tribes, including the Ute Mountain Ute Tribe, Navajo Nation, Ute Indian Tribe of the Uintah Ouray, Hopi Nation, and Zuni Tribe. The area's human history is as vibrant and diverse as the ruggedly beautiful landscape. From the earliest occupation, native peoples left traces of their presence. Clovis people hunted among the cliffs and canyons of Cedar Mesa as early as 13,000 years ago, leaving behind tools and projectile points in places like the Lime Ridge Clovis Site, one of the oldest known archaeological sites in Utah. Archaeologists believe that these early people hunted mammoths, ground sloths, and other now-extinct megafauna, a narrative echoed by native creation stories. Hunters and gatherers continued to live in this region in the Archaic Period, with sites dating as far back as 8,500 years ago. -

The Executive Secretary is circulating herewith, for the information of participants in the twenty-first meeting of the Subsidiary Body on Scientific, Technical and Technological Advice, a report presenting a comprehensive overview of international trade in wildlife species listed in the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) in the Amazon countries: Bolivia; Brazil; Colombia; Ecuador; Guyana; Peru; Suriname; and Venezuela. The analysis provides a baseline of information on trade levels and trends in these countries for the 10-year period 2005-2014, in order to inform trade management in the region. It has been produced in close collaboration with national experts, presenting contextual information and insights into the management of wildlife trade in the region. 2. The report is relevant to the work of the Convention on Biological Diversity, in particular with regard to decision XIII/8, paragraph 5(d), in which the Conference of the Parties requests the Executive Secretary, in collaboration with other members of the Collaborative Partnership on Sustainable Wildlife Management, to continue to support efforts by Parties to combat illicit trafficking in wildlife, in line with United Nations General Assembly resolution 69/314 of 30 July 2015, and to enhance institutional capacities on wildlife conservation and law enforcement with relevant law enforcement bodies, such as the International Consortium on Combating Wildlife Crime. -

Withers Department of Zoology, University of Western Australia, Nedlands, Western Australia 6907 Abstract - The desert tree frog, Litoria rubella, is a small (2-4 g) frog found in northern Australia. These tree frogs typically rest in a water-conserving posture, and are moderately water-proof. Their evaporative water loss when in the water-conserving posture is reduced to 1.8 mg min'l (39 mg g'1 h'l) and resistance increased to 7.3 sec cm'l, compared with tree frogs not in the water-conserving posture (7.6 mg min'l, 173 mg g'l h'1, 1.1 sec cm'I). When in the water-conserving posture and exposed to dry air, the tree frogs dramatically change colour from the typical gray, brown or fawn, to a bright white. The toe-web melanophore index decreases from 3.8 for moist frogs, to 2.3 for desiccated frogs. The high skin resistance to evaporation and white colour of tree frogs when exposed to desiccating conditions appear to be important adaptations to reduce evaporative water loss and prevent overheating when basking in direct sunlight. AESCHT Abstract: Delight and burden of naming - About names from the microscopic world. — A short history of desi- gnating mainly genera and species of ciliates (Ciliophora), which are relatively "large" and rich of characters, is gi- ven. True vernacular (genuine) names are understandably absent; German names have been established from 1755 to 1838 and in the last three decades of the 20lh century in scientific and popular literature. A first analysis from a linguistic point of view of about 1400 scientific names of type species shows that frequently metaphoric names have been applied referring to objects of everday use and somatic characters of well known animals including human beings. A nomenclaturally updated list of 271 species including German names is provided, of which numerous syn- onyms and homonyms have to be clarified cooperatively; 160 of these species are of saprobiological relevance and 119 refer to type species of genera. Malpractices of amateurs and scientists have been due to a confusion of nomen- clature, a formalized exact tool of designation, and taxonomy, the theory and practice of classifying organisms. It is argued that names in national languages may help to publicise the diversity and importance of microscopic orga- nisms; their description and labeling are a particular challenge to creative, recently underestimated linguistic com- petence. Limnological Institute, Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Ulan-Batorskaya Str., 3, Irkutsk, 664033, Russia ABSTRACT. Changes in biocenoses of the shallow water zone of open Lake Baikal continue. In the autumn of 2019 during scuba dives, we recorded abundant fouling of macrophytes in the littoral zone by ciliates of the subclass Peritrichia, the genus Vorticella, at the Listvyanka settlement – Bolshiye Koty settlement section (west coast of Southern Baikal). Despite the fact the Vorticella are the permanent component of the Bailak periphyton, such mass development of Peritrichia in the littoral zone of open Baikal has not been previously recorded. Increasing anthropogenic pressure in the littoral zone of the lake can be one of the main causes of this outbreak in the abundance of Vorticella cf. campanula, the main species of this fouling. Using the Web of Life Cards These cards are a wonderful introduction to plants and animals found in various environ- ments at Grand Canyon. Conducting the “Web of Life” Activity 1. Assign a card to each student, using the non-living cards (sun, water, air, bacteria, fungi, soil and fire) in addition to a variety of the cards found from pages 2-19. Ask each child to read their card and find one cool fact that they would like to share with the class or small groups. 2. Creating the web of life requires a long piece of string (possibly as long as 300 feet) to symbolize the connection of energy between organisms. Ask all the students to stand in a circle, facing the center. 3. The sun is the source of all energy; ask the student with the sun card to stand in the center of the circle and grab one end of the string. 4. Next, the string is passed from student to student, showing the connection of plants to herbivores, carnivores, and omnivores, successively. This activity can be general, connecting students by the category they fit in or can be specific, connecting the sun to cottonwood to beaver to water, etc. until all students are included. 5. After each student is holding onto the string, emphasize connections and introduce certain situations that com- monly occur in nature, such as forest fires, predation, drought, and urban development. As you introduce differ- ent scenarios, discuss who will be affected. Plants can not relocate or move during a forest fire, they will die and thus students should drop their string. -
