“ITRIBUNE may disapprove of what you say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it” — Voltaire Pandemic hits Downtown, Strip

The empty streets of Downtown (left) and The Las Vegas Strip (right), following President Trump’s guidelines, have shut down all concerts, shows, and events to slow down the spread of the deadly coronavirus. As casinos close, conventions and sporting events are canceled, it is time for Las Vegas residents to stay calm and not panic, and ride out the storm; it will pass. Mnuchin said the administration wanted to get cash payments to Amer- icans in the next “two weeks,” but wouldn’t say how much the one-time payments would be. “We’re looking at sending checks to Americans immediately,” Mnuchin told reporters at the White House. Trump has been pushing for a payroll tax cut as a means of helping those feeling economic impacts of the virus. The president also told reporters at a briefing Monday that his administration would “back the airlines 100 percent” and said officials would “very strongly” consider the request for $50 billion in assistance made by the industry. Mnuchin is expected to outline the package to Senate Republicans on Tuesday. He indicated Tuesday that the stimulus package proposal would also include payments to small business and loan guarantees to specific industries, like airlines and hotels. Schumer, meanwhile, is expected to unveil a proposal laying out some $750 billion in spending to address the economic fallout of the virus. The package that the administration is seeking, if approved, would represent the third such action Congress has taken to address the impact of the virus, which has sickened well over 4,000 people in the United States, rattled the stock market and prompted school, business and other closures across the country. News of the proposal comes a day after the House passed a sweeping package aimed at helping American families affected by the virus, which gained support from President Trump.

Canon One requires judges to uphold and promote the “impartiality of the judiciary, and ... avoid impropriety and the appearance of impropriety.” Canon Three requires judges to conduct their “personal and extraju- dicial activities to minimize the risk of conflict with the obligations of judicial office.” These rules include warnings not to engage in conduct “inconsistent with the indepen- dence, integrity, or impartiality of the judiciary.” Due to these principles, judges usually are highly restrained in their public comments, particularly about political or ideological mat- ters. When I have served on panels with sitting federal judges, they often balk at even discussing the scope of constitutional rights out of concern for these canons. Fed- eral judges are expected to speak through their opinions, not through editorials or law reviews. Adelman has had his run ins with the Supreme Court and other higher courts over his views, which often seem in defiance of controlling precedent. For example, he ruled in 2014 that a Wisconsin voter iden- tification law was unconstitutional under the 14th Amendment. The Supreme Court, however, had held in 2008 that an Indiana law with key similarities was constitutional. That did not deter Adelman, who declared the earlier Supreme Court ruling in the case of Crawford v. Marion County Election Board was not controlling. A unanimous Sev- enth Circuit disagreed and found that a key finding by Adelman was identical to the one rejected by the Supreme Court. Fortunately, we have appellate courts to correct such errors from the bench. Public comments are more difficult to address, since fed- eral jurists hold life-tenure. I have been a persistent critic of justices like Ruth Bader Ginsburg and the late Antonin Scalia for repeatedly violating this tradition. Yet, justices often note that they are not subject to the same rules as lower court judges and that the judicial ethical canons are merely advisory for those on the highest court. Adelman has no such claim of exemption but has long acted as if he did. This is not his first departure from judicial tradition. In 2017, he authored another law review article entitled, “How Big Money Ruined Public Life in Wisconsin.” It exco- riated Republican legislators and then-Gov. Scott Walker for efforts to “to undo Wisconsin’s long-stand- ing commitment to transparency” and other political controversies. I was invited to their Barry Manilow Industry event and excited to take the special elevator to the Verona Sky Villa, formally Elvis Presley’s suite, on the 30th floor. Inside the regal suite, guests walked around this luxurious set- ting, usually only seen in films. Murals, Roman-style pillars, and chandeliers adorned the halls, piano room, master and guest bedrooms, and most of the other rooms. Everyone gathered in the excep- tionally large living room for an opportunity to sample their luscious large strawberries dipped in choc- olate, spicy appetizers, an Asian delight, Asian Spring Rolls, and the most delicious flavorful meat balls, a gourmet treat with lots of sauce. Should You Claim Social Security at 70? By Maurie Backman The Motley Fool If you’re not familiar with Social Security, you might assume that there’s a single point in time at which you become eligible for ben- efits. After all, that’s how Medicare works — you’re covered once you turn 65, but not before. Social Security works different- ly, however. While the benefits you collect are based on how much you earned during your working years, the age at which you file for those benefits can cause them to go up, go down, or stay the same. And you actually get an eight-year window to claim benefits that kicks off at age 62 and closes at age 70. (Tech- nically, you’re not required to file at 70, but there’s no reason not to, which we’ll get into in just a bit.) Now here’s what you need to know about that eight-year win- dow: Smack in the middle of it is your full retirement age (FRA), which is the age at which you’re entitled to your full monthly benefit without a reduction. For workers born in 1960 or later, that age is 67. If you were born prior to 1967, your FRA is 66, or 66 and a certain number of months. For each month you file for have a steady paycheck.
