Piper Jackson-Sevy, Isaiah Rifkin, The traditional ballast of the CWA—international affairs, politics, Lucie Rosner and media—remains strong, and we have expanded to include Student Volunteer Coordinators more human rights, music, and storytelling, more science, tech, and business topics. We Piper Jackson-Sevy, believe the Conference explores a broader range of issues than ever and in more depth. Our Briana Johnson, Jack Lipson experts prepare for their panels and do so without losing the spontaneous, playful give and CWA Athenaeum Fellows take of genuine intellectual jousting and jesting. Andi Hasenkamp CWA International Affairs Fellow What I have to say about the CWA all of you know. “Unique” is a word too casually thrown Sophia Cole, Katie Umphlett about, but it fits the Conference—unique indeed with its talented, brilliant 100 plus partici- Student Interns pants and its 200 events that are free and open to the public. The Conference is CU’s best Carl Ganz outreach, and it is also an in-reach to students and the University community. This year-round symposia has Bruce Montgomery brought over 75 distinguished guests to campus for nearly 500 class visitations, public CWA Archives Project Supervisor lectures, and student workshops and dinners since 1999. Ramsay Thurber CWA Archives Advisor Thanks for the memories. Sixteen years seemed to travel at the speed of light. As Howard Higman Groucho would say, “Hello, I must be going.” Saying goodbye to a venerable institution I Founder love, to thousands of CU students and community volunteers and an enterprising staff— thank you, Jane Butcher, for decades of dedication and wise leadership and to Maura Clare THE CONFERENCE ON WORLD AFFAIRS IS for brilliant organizational skills and creative ideas—is even harder than I imagined. With a GRATEFUL FOR SUPPORT RECEIVED FROM full heart I say again, it’s not the happy people who are grateful, but the grateful people who PHIL DISTEFANO Chancellor, University of Colorado at Boulder are happy. Now go and expand your brain and fill your Provost and Executive Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs heart with stories. STEVEN LEIGH Dean, College of Arts and Sciences TO THE CONFERENCE ON WORLD AFFAIRS, LONG MAY IT THRIVE! - IN MEMORIAM - Al Bartlett 1923-2013 Otomar Bartos 1927-2013 James Palmer, Director Oscar Castro-Neves 1940-2013 Roger Ebert This program is dedicated to our beloved James Palmer in honor of his sixteen years as Director of the 1942-2013 Conference on World Affairs and creator of the CWA Athenaeum. He has overseen a dramatic expansion Simon Hoggart in CWA attendance, with double the number of students, faculty, staff, Coloradans, visitors from across 1946-2014 the country and globe now celebrating the campus’s annual rite of spring together. Thanks to Jim’s wise John Murphy and loving stewardship, the sense of community and spirit of volunteerism that characterizes our 1923-2013 Conference has deepened, as we collectively open our arms each year in welcoming the world to Boulder.
