    Political Entertainment Media and the Elaboration Likelihood Model: A Focus on the Roles of Motivation and Ability Dissertation Presented in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of the Ohio State University By Heather Lyn LaMarre, MPA, MA Graduate Program in Communication The Ohio State University 2009 Dissertation Committee: R. Lance Holbert, Advisor David Ewoldsen Silvia Knobloch-Westerwick Michael McCluskey Copyright by Heather Lyn LaMarre 2009 Abstract This dissertation extends the Elaboration Likelihood Model (ELM) to the study of political communication. In particular, the project focuses on the role of ability and motivation, relative to contact with a variety of political entertainment media messages, on cognitive elaborations. Two studies were conducted to examine these political entertainment processes and effects. The first study was a 2 (ability: low, high) x 2 (media stimuli: The Daily Show, Anderson Cooper 360o) between-subjects design that examined individual-level cognitive elaboration and attitudes about the AIG executive bonus scandal involving government bailout funds. The second study was a 2 (motivation: high, low) x 2 (media stimuli: Sicko, Sicko and An American Carol) between-subjects design that examined individual-level cognitive elaboration and attitudes concerning nationalized healthcare. Results replicated traditional ELM findings. Ability and motivation had direct effects on individual-level elaboration. The main effects of ability and motivation were also found for issue-relevant and positively valenced thoughts. Message directly influenced individual-level elaborations, including total and issue-relevant thoughts. Additionally, interactions between message and ability were found for source credibility, counter-arguments, and media engagement.

    TWITTER FREE IRAN: AN EVALUATION OF TWITTER’S ROLE IN PUBLIC DIPLOMACY AND INFORMATION OPERATIONS IN IRAN’S 2009 ELECTION CRISIS ALEX BURNS Faculty of Business and Law Victoria University [email protected] BEN ELTHAM Centre for Cultural Research University of Western Sydney and Fellow, Centre for Policy Development [email protected]) Abstract Social media platforms such as Twitter pose new challenges for decision-makers in an international crisis. We examine Twitter’s role during Iran’s 2009 election crisis using a comparative analysis of Twitter investors, US State Department diplomats, citizen activists and Iranian protestors and paramilitary forces. We code for key events during the election’s aftermath from 12 June to 5 August 2009, and evaluate Twitter. Foreign policy, international political economy and historical sociology frameworks provide a deeper context of how Twitter was used by different users for defensive information operations and public diplomacy. Those who believe Twitter and other social network technologies will enable ordinary people to seize power from repressive regimes should consider the fate of Iran’s protestors, some of whom paid for their enthusiastic adoption of Twitter with their lives. This does not reflect what Occupy Wall Street looks like, but it does reflect the problem of why people don?t know. Beholden to revenue-generating forces, even well-respected news establishments aren?t above commercializing resistance or viewing current events through green-tinted lenses. With banks annoying people into becoming their customers with a deluge of well-funded advertisements about what is ?priceless? or ?what?s in your wallet,? and media outlets unafraid of losing their financial support from OWS because, frankly, there isn?t any, it?s easy to see why most people aren?t getting a fair portrayal of who the Occupiers and supporters really are. And the banks aren?t just purchasing the influence of politicians?they are purchasing influence among law enforcement. Large donations were made to NYPD, including the recent donation from J.P.
