Linking plant population dynamics to the local environment and forest succession Johan P. Dahlgren Stockholm University © Johan P. Vad tjänar det till att ruta in och göra skarpa gränser i denna svala täta trängsel av gröna gräs och blader. - Harry Martinson, 1937. Doctoral dissertation Johan P. Dahlgren Department of Botany Stockholm University SE-106 91 Stockholm Sweden Linking plant population dynamics to the local environment and forest succession Abstract – Linking environmental variation to population dynamics is neces- sary to understand and predict how the environment influences species abun- dances and distributions. I used demographic, environmental and trait data of forest herbs to study effects of spatial variation in environmental factors o n populations as well as environmental change in terms of effects of forest succession on field layer plants. The results show that abundances of field layer species during forest succession are correlated with their functional traits; species with high sp ecific leaf area increased more in abundance. I also found that soil nutrients affect vegetative and flowering phenology of the forest herb Actaea spicata . The effect of nutrients shows that a wider range of environmental factors than usually assumed can influence plant phenol- ogy. Moreover, local environmental factors affected also the demography of A. spicata through effects on vital rates. An abiotic factor, soil potassium affecting individual growth rate, was more important for population growth rate than seed predation, the most conspicuous biotic interaction in this sys- tem.

Our data show that monoculture has a short-term impact on overall diversity and richness of species but with a relative resilience capacity of the forest ecosystem. More precisely, real impacts are visible on dynamics and abundances of certain species, depending on the vertical distribution of the biota and on the composition of soil and forest floor. Soc. linn. – Geometridae, Eupithecia immundata, Eupithecia actaeata, Massif central, Haute-Loire, Ardèche, France, Ranunculaceae, Actaea spicata. Eupithecia immundata Lienig et Zeller and Eupithecia actaeata Walderdorff: new distribution in the east of Massif Central (France) (Lepidoptera, Geometridae) Summary. – For the first time, Eupithecia immundata Lienig et Zeller and Eupithecia actaeata Walderdorff are recorded from two new areas of Massif central (Haute-Loire and Ardèche departments). Keywords. – Geometridae, Eupithecia immundata, Eupithecia actaeata, Massif central, Haute-Loire, Ardèche, France, Ranunculaceae, Actaea spicata.

FOLIA ENTOMOLOGICA HUNGARICA ROVARTANI KÖZLEMÉNYEK Volume 79 2018 pp. 127–161 Data of Geometridae (Lepidoptera) from the Korean Peninsula in the collections of the Hungarian Natural History Museum – subfamily Larentiinae* Balázs Tóth**, Gergely Katona & Zsolt Bálint Hungarian Natural History Museum, Department of Zoology, H-1088 Budapest, Baross utca 13, Hungary. E-mails: [email protected], [email protected], [email protected] Abstract – Data of 2597 specimens of 155 species collected in Korea from 239 collecting events representing the subfamily Larentiinae are presented. Five species, Electrophaes recens (Inoue, 1982), Horisme aquata (Hübner, 1813), Perizoma bifaciata (Haworth, 1809), Eupithecia inturbata (Hübner, 1817) and Eupithecia caliginea Butler, 1878 are new for the fauna of the Korean Peninsula and adjacent islands. Diff erential features, images of habitus and genitalia of these species are giv- en. Further 16 species are new for North Korea, 3 species are new for South Korea. With 13 fi gures. Key words – checklist, Electrophaes, Eupithecia, Horisme, new record, Perizoma, undescribed species INTRODUCTION Th e subfamily Larentiinae contains ca. 6300 described species, being the sec- ond most species-rich group of Geometridae (Hausmann & Viidalepp 2012). Choi (2003) made an important step in the study of Korean Larentiinae material preserved in the Hungarian Natural History Museum. He published data of 108 species from North Korea, including fi rst records of ten species from the entire Korean Peninsula. Later on, he made a detailed overview of the Korean Larentiinae fauna in a series of books (Choi 2012a, b, 2013, 2014). Th is paper summarises the Larentiinae material from Korea in the for- mat similar to the work of Bálint & Katona (2011), and is intended to be a continuation of that paper.

Tidskr. I I I : l- 15. UmeA, Sweden 1990. ISSN 001 3-886x. 'Ihe preimaginal slages of Baptria tibiale (F.sper) and Eupithecia actaeato (Walderdorff) (Lep., Geometridae) are compared. Differences in the larval colour pattem, biology and behaviour, and the pupal appearance are discussed and illustrated. The habitat preferences and some ecological characteristics were compared at co-existence at one locality, based primarily on lhe local distribution of eggs and larvae. Eggs of B. ribiale were predominantly lound on sunexposed hostplants. B. tibiale is a heliothermophilic species restricted to climato- logically advantageous sites that demands at least rnoderately sunexposed and windshaded hostplants for oviposition and development. The results indicate that B. tibiale is favoured by the creation of gaps in late-successional forests, or by the decidous stage lhat earlier developed in the post-fire succession. The results also indicate that modem forestry is disad- vantageous Io the species due to the favouring of homogenous and closed forest stands. It is proposed that the creation of gaps, or small clear-felled areas may be a suitable method for maintaining lhe species. The distribution of B. tibiale and its hostplants in NW Europe is illustrated and its local forms are discussed. E. actoeata preferred shaded localities and eggs and larvae were almost exclusively found in the closed spruce forest area.
