Online Appendix for Harald Hammarstr¨om& Mark Donohue (2014) Some Principles of the Use of Macro-Areas Language Dynamics & Change Harald Hammarstr¨om& Mark Donohue The following document lists the languages of the world and their as- signment to the macro-areas described in the main body of the paper as well as the WALS macro-area for languages featured in the WALS 2005 edi- tion. 7160 languages are included, which represent all languages for which we had coordinates available1. Every language is given with its ISO-639-3 code (if it has one) for proper identification. The mapping between WALS languages and ISO-codes was done by using the mapping downloadable from the 2011 online WALS edition2 (because a number of errors in the mapping were corrected for the 2011 edition). 38 WALS languages are not given an ISO-code in the 2011 mapping, 36 of these have been assigned their appropri- ate iso-code based on the sources the WALS lists for the respective language. This was not possible for Tasmanian (WALS-code: tsm) because the WALS mixes data from very different Tasmanian languages and for Kualan (WALS- code: kua) because no source is given. 17 WALS-languages were assigned ISO-codes which have subsequently been retired { these have been assigned their appropriate updated ISO-code. In many cases, a WALS-language is mapped to several ISO-codes. As this has no bearing for the assignment to macro-areas, multiple mappings have been retained. 1There are another couple of hundred languages which are attested but for which our database currently lacks coordinates. -

Chiru is an endangered Kuki-Chin language of Tibeto-Burman language family (Grierson 1904) spoken by 8599 speakers (Census of India: 2011). Harmony is a term used in phonology to refer to the way the articulation of one phonological unit is influenced by another unit in the same word or phrase (Crystal 1997). An analogous notion is that of assimilation. The two main processes are consonant harmony and vowel harmony. Interestingly vowel harmony is found only in a few languages among Kuki-Chin groups, viz., Biate, Chiru etc. Most of the Kuki-Chin languages like Thadou, do not have vowel harmony. The vowel harmony in Chiru mainly occurs in pronominal prefixes and genitives of the first and third persons, causative prefixes, numeral prefixes and a few disyllabic words. This phonological process in Chiru is due to the regressive assimilation of vowels in which the vowel phoneme in the first syllable is influenced by the vowel phoneme in the following syllable to become identical to each other in a word. Linguistics of the Tibeto-Burman Area Volume 34.1 — April 2011 THE LANGUAGES OF MANIPUR: A CASE STUDY OF THE KUKI-CHIN LANGUAGES* Pauthang Haokip Department of Linguistics, Assam University, Silchar Abstract: Manipur is primarily the home of various speakers of Tibeto-Burman languages. Aside from the Tibeto-Burman speakers, there are substantial numbers of Indo-Aryan and Dravidian speakers in different parts of the state who have come here either as traders or as workers. Keeping in view the lack of proper information on the languages of Manipur, this paper presents a brief outline of the languages spoken in the state of Manipur in general and Kuki-Chin languages in particular. The social relationships which different linguistic groups enter into with one another are often political in nature and are seldom based on genetic relationship. Thus, Manipur presents an intriguing area of research in that a researcher can end up making wrong conclusions about the relationships among the various linguistic groups, unless one thoroughly understands which groups of languages are genetically related and distinct from other social or political groupings. To dispel such misconstrued notions which can at times mislead researchers in the study of the languages, this paper provides an insight into the factors linguists must take into consideration before working in Manipur. The data on Kuki-Chin languages are primarily based on my own information as a resident of Churachandpur district, which is further supported by field work conducted in Churachandpur district during the period of 2003-2005 while I was working for the Central Institute of Indian Languages, Mysore, as a research investigator. -
Towards the Understanding of Surnames and Naming Patterns in Meitei Society

Surnames came into existence before king Loiyumpa (1074-1122 AD). Surname is part of a personal name that is passed from either or both parents to their offspring. Surnames in Meitei society are derived from father‟s name. Meiteis have 7 clans and each clan has several surnames. In the 14th century A.D during the reign of King Kiyamba, Brahmins from the mainland of India started to come and settled in Manipur. They have been given different surnames except the seven clans. Again, during the reign of King Khagemba, in the 16th century, Muslims from Bengal started to settle at Manipur, known as Pangal [paŋəl]. These people are now known by the name Meitei pangal. They also have been given with different surnames except the seven clans. This paper is an attempt to provide some insights of surnames and naming patterns in Meitei society and their importance in the society. Such beliefs and perception are shaped by society‟s cultural values and norms. Attempt has been done to highlight the people‟s perceptions and attitude held among the Meitei‟s towards Persons with Disability (PWD). Data were collected by using both quantitative and qualitative method. It has been found that perceptions regarding disability were deeply rooted in the mind of the Meitei people that still in this modern and scientific age people strongly holds the false perception regarding the causes of disability which has been linked to the old traditional cultural beliefs. It is also found that religion and caste status have favourable attitude towards PWD despite the fact that religions followed by the Meitei represent disability negatively. Matisoff, Chair The Kuki-Chin languages constitute one of the most important subgroups of the great Tibeto-Burman family. This dissertation attempts to reconstruct the sound system of the ancestor language, Proto-Kuki-Chin, by comparing the initial consonants, rhymes, and nominal tones of a large number of KC languages. This study of Proto-Kuki-Chin depends primarily on twelve languages: three from the Central Chin group: Mizo (aka Lushai), Hakha Lai, and Falam Lai; four from the Southem- Plains Chin group: Mindat Cho, Daai, Asho (aka Plains Chin), and Khumi; four from the Northern Chin group: Tedim (aka Tiddim), Paite, Thado-Kuki, and Sizang; and finally one from the Maraic group, namely Mara (aka Lakher). Chapter 1 introduces the Kuki-Chin speakers and their geographical locations, and traces the etymologies of the names Kuki and Chin. -
The Role of Oral Tradition with Special Reference to the Thadou-Kuki Society

Mary Kim Haokip Thadou-Kuki society is well known for its oral tradition that expresses valuable messages. The Thadous have a rich collection of folk literature in different genres that include folk narratives, songs, proverbs, riddles, tales, nursery rhymes, lullabies, war songs, sacrificial chants, etc. All forms of oral tradition in Thadou society contains various informational values on religion, history, customs and public practices, and information that has the values of local wisdom in the daily life of the community, as well as genealogical information or descendant of a family in the community. All of the information are received, developed, and derived and transmitted to the future generations through a wide variety of oral tradition. However, with the advent of education, modern entertainment, changing lifestyle and advanced technology, oral tradition has begun to be gradually abandoned and forgotten by the Thadou society. This has adversely affected the existence and transmission of the rich and valuable oral tradition of the Thadous. The aim of the present paper is to discuss the gradual decline in the role and status of oral tradition in Thadou society and the need for maintaining and preserving before it is lost forever. The paper argues for collective responsibility of every member to preserve and store this rich oral tradition. Additionally, documentation and information centres, such as libraries, archives institution, and museum can help to identify, collect, document the oral tradition and preserve the information contained in the oral tradition. -

Biate stands for both the people and the language. It is spoken by 19,000 speakers (Ethnologue 2019). Grierson-Konow (1904) and Graham Thurgood (2003) classified Biate to the Old-Kuki sub-group of Sino-Tibetan language family. The paper will discuss and examine the word order pattern, which is one of the primary ways in which languages differ from one another. Biate is a verb-final language, with SOV as its basic word order. It exhibits a large number of characteristics expected of it as an OV language. Biate employs postpositions (PP), which follow the noun phrase they combine with. Like other Kuki-Chin languages, the genitive is indicated by the possessor which precedes the possessed item. The Adjective follows the noun (NAdj) in Biate. Noun modifiers like numerals and classifiers follow the noun. Relative clause precedes the noun (RelN) in Biate. Manipur, the Land of Jewels, has been besieged with conflicts on issues ranging from exclusivity, integration and governance. All these have stemmed from the basic dispute over the land. The tribal people of the hills and the valley based people have different approaches and laws towards governance of their land which they consider their exclusive territories.
