BEAVER, CIMARRON, AND TEXAS COUNTIES by D. L. Hart, Jr., G. L. Hoffman, and R. L. Goemaat ABSTRACT The Ogallala aquifer, which consists of semiconso1idated clay, sand, and gravel, is the principal source of ground water in the Oklahoma Panhandle. This aquifer commonly yields 500 to 1.000 gallons per minute (32 to 63 litres per second) and may yield as much as 2,500 gallons per minute (158 litres per second). Based on an estimated average storage coefficient of 0.1, the quantity of water stored in the ogallala aquifer was computed at approximately 50 million acre-feet (6.17 x 1010 cubic metres). Local overdevelopment of this water resource has resulted in water-level declines of more than 40 feet (12 metres) from 1966 to 1972 in some areas of concen­ trated well development. The amount of ground water in storage has been reduced about 2 percent during this period. Aquifer tests indicate that transmissivity ranges from 500 to 11,800 feet squared per day (46 to 1,100 metres squared per day), the storage coefficient ranges from 0.002 to 0.11, and hydraulic conductivity ranges from 2.1 to 55 feet per day (0.6 to 16.8 metres per day). In addition to these tests, 802 specific-capacity tests were used to extend transmissivity data. Recharge to the Ogallala aquifer is primarily from precipitation and may be as much as 1 inch (25 millimetres) per year in areas where catchment and percolation are most favorable. Discharge is primarily from pumping and a small amount of natural discharge. Aquifers of limited importance are the Dakota Sandstone and the Cheyenne Sandstone Member of the Purgatoire Formation which provide water to irriga­ tion wells in the southwestern part of Cimarron County. Irrigation wells generally are completed jointly in these aquifers and yields of 300 to 500 gallons per minute (19 to 32 litres per second) are common. Water levels in these aquifers have not shown the pronounced declines that have occurred in the Ogallala aquifer. Permian red beds provide only small quantities of water to domestic and stock wells. Water in the Ogallala aquifer, Dakota Sandstone, and Cheyenne Sandstone Member generally has a dissolved-solids concentration

DeMllle's 1914 classic, from the novel by Owen Wlster, with Dustin Famun who played in the stage version, will be shown as part of a series of eleven early films to be presented from January 14 through January 25, at The Museum of Modern Art. The Jesse Lasky production of "The Virginian" will be introduced by James Card, Curator of the George Eastman House Motion Picture Study Collection in Rochester, which is providing the films on the Museum program. At the eight o'clock, January 14 performance, Mr. Card will introduce the film and address himself to the controversy over the direction of "The Virginian," one of the early silent feature films. The fact that Cecil B. DeMille directed has been in dispute over the years. On the same program with "The Virginian," another vintage film will be shown. Tod Browning's "The Unknown" starring Lon Chaney. Made in 1927, it was an original story by the director, called "Alonzo, the Armless." According to The New York Times Film Reviews, a recently published compilation of the paper's film criticism, "the role ought to have satisfied Mr. Chaney's penchant for freakish characterizations for here he not only has to go about for hours with his arms strapped to his body, but when he rests behind bolted doors, one perceives that he has on his left hand a double thumb." Joan Crawford plays the female lead in the film, about which Roy Edwards writes in Sight and Sound, the characters and special effects add up to a "thorough display of grotesqueries." Other notable films that are part of this film preservation program are "Cimarron," starring Richard Dix and made in 1931 from Edna Ferber's popular novel; "Dr.

Paul 3109 North Calvert Station, Side Apartment, Baltimore, MD 21218-3807, USA Received 20 April 2006; accepted in revised form 27 April 2007 Abstract Criteria for designating dinosaur genera are inconsistent; some very similar species are highly split at the generic level, other anatomically disparate species are united at the same rank. Since the mid-1800s the classic genus Iguanodon has become a taxonomic grab-bag containing species spanning most of the Early Cretaceous of the northern hemisphere. Recently the genus was radically redesignated when the type was shifted from nondiagnostic English Valanginian teeth to a complete skull and skeleton of the heavily built, semi-quadrupedal I. bernissartensis from much younger Belgian sediments, even though the latter is very different in form from the gracile skeletal remains described by Mantell. Currently, iguanodont remains from Europe are usually assigned to either robust I. bernissartensis or gracile I. atherfieldensis, regardless of lo- cation or stage. A stratigraphic analysis is combined with a character census that shows the European iguanodonts are markedly more morpho- logically divergent than other dinosaur genera, and some appear phylogenetically more derived than others. Two new genera and a new species have been or are named for the gracile iguanodonts of the Wealden Supergroup; strongly bipedal Mantellisaurus atherfieldensis Paul (2006. Log-probability curves of the grain-size distributions when compared to the work of Visher (1969) indicate environments ranging from distributary channels to marine wave deposits. The Mesa Rica delta prograded into the marine Tucumcari Basin from the north as shown by the south-trending to southwest-trending paleocurrent directions, and the decrease in mean grain size and thickness to the southeast, south, and southwest (lobate geometry). Also, a decrease in percent cross stratification to the southeast, south, and southwest (accompanied by an increase in percent bioturbation and burrowing) indicates a transition from predominantly fluvial to predominantly marine conditions. If the Mesa Rica Sandstone is correlative with the lower fluvial interval of the Dakota Sandstone north and northwest of the Tucumcari Basin as suggested by Scott (1970), then the Dakota Sandstone represents the fluvial facies of the Mesa Rica marine delta complex.
