Portimão’s Praia da Rocha beach with its rugged cliffs is just one of many excellent ones found along the coast the lesser known Praia do Vau a little further west is also well worth seeking out. Rugged cliffs and secluded coves give the beaches of Carvoeiro plenty of character, with rock formations that have become attractions in their own right. Take a boat trip to see the caves of Praia de Benagil, where a circular ‘eye’ opening gives sight of a small beach hidden inside. Speaking of beaches, Praia da Marinha is considered one of the world’s most beautiful, with incredibly transparent waters, and Praia da Carvoeiro itself is also very pleasing. Many of the caves along the coast are visible from Carvoeiro’s boardwalk on the clifftop. Another notable sight is the beautiful Alfanzina Lighthouse. The A Boneca restaurant is also remarkable not because there’s any shortage of them, but because of its incredible location. Set amongst the rocks and caves, it has a spectacular view of the ocean. At around 50 minutes’ drive from Faro Airport, Carvoeiro enjoys a great location west of that city. South of mountainous Monchique and within easy reach of Silves, it’s clear of the hedonism of the Albufeira strip, and only 20 minutes drive from Portimão. With its stunning marina and excellent shopping facilities, this riverside city is well worth a visit. The area is made for watersports like wind-surfing, kayaking and sailing, but if you don’t want to risk getting wet, there are also plenty of golf courses and inland areas of natural beauty. Schauen Sie selbst was Sie in Portugal entdecken möchten.

You have probably heard about the Algarve. A friend may have told you about one of its magnificent beaches, maybe you’ve seen a report about its cuisine or perhaps you’ve picked up a brochure like this one before. But there is an Algarve that you haven’t seen, tasted or explored before: it’s the Algarve that the local people know and love. For almost three thousand years Phoenicians, Carthaginians, Greeks, Romans, Goths, Maghrebins and Mauritanians did what you do - they passed through the Algarve. Until, in 1249, the Al-Gharb (“the West”) was finally taken from the Islamic world by Sancho II, who took the title of King of Portugal and the Algarve. Since then, the pride shared by the inhabitants of the Algarve has compelled them to reveal their region’s greatest secrets to visitors – about their favourite beaches, hidden hamlets, natural walks and even recommending the best restaurants. Sun and Sea 2 Golf 8 Health and Wellness 14 Culture 20 Nature 26 Nautical Tourism 32 Sport 38 Meeting Industry 44 1 St. Vicent Lighthouse Beliche Beach Sun and Sea The Horizon as a meeting point 2 Barra da Armona - Olhão 4 Sun and Sea Let us reveal a secret: the word Algarve comes from the Arabic “Al Gharb”, meaning “West”, but if you’ve been here before you know that it could also mean sun and sea. The sun shines brightly in the Algarve for around 300 days a year, during spring and summer naturally, but in autumn and winter as well. The sea is always ready to welcome swimmers, surfers, body-boarders, divers, fishermen, yachtsmen, sailors and any other lovers of clear, warm waters.

Certainly nothing that the region’s most fervent fans are not already aware of. They experience a constant stream of emotions, awakened by the fine sandy beaches, the scent of the sea air, the greenish-blue colour of the sea, the tiny inhabitants of the rock pools (such as crabs and starfish) and the larger ones in the waters along the shore (such as dolphins), the warm sun flooding the natural landscape with its golden rays and all the vast array of activities on offer at the beach. Holidaymakers are spoiled for choice here. You can go surfing, bodyboarding, water skiing, kitesurfing, parasailing or deep-sea fishing; there are organised boat trips, pedal boats and kayaks; you can play seaside racquet games, build gigantic sandcastles, read a book or simply soak in the refreshing waters of the Atlantic. All of these activities can be enjoyed on our beaches. And if you’re a dedicated beachgoer, you’re bound to have tried several, all of them offering safety and excellent services for summer holidaymakers. But being a fan of the Algarve’s beaches means more still: it means recognising that they are more inviting than any others for holidays in summer and walking in winter, as an alternative to the uplands of the serra.
