July 15, 2004 5:39:00 AM/PDT (news embargo time) CONTACT: Robin Mesger at The Lippin Group (323/965-1990) 2003 – 2004 PRIMETIME EMMY AWARDS NOMINATIONS Nominations for the 56th Annual Primetime Emmy Awards for the period of June 1, 2003 through May 31, 2004, were announced today (July 15) by the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences from the Leonard H. Goldenson Theatre, North Hollywood, California. The Academy’s Chairman of the Board & CEO Dick Askin presided, assisted by Edie Falco and Tony Shalhoub. The awards presentation telecast awarding Emmys in 28 categories before a black-tie audience will be televised by the ABC Television Network on Sunday, September 19, from the Los Angeles Shrine Auditorium. The Academy's Governors Ball will follow the telecast at the Shrine Exhibition Hall, adjacent to the auditorium. This year's Emmy telecast will be hosted by Garry Shandling, executive-produced by Don Mischer and produced by Michael Seligman. Danette Herman is the coordinating producer. On Sunday, September 12, also at the Shrine Auditorium, 59 awards “categories” (a single award) and “areas” (possibility of one, more than one or no award) will be handed out at a black-tie presentation co-chaired by Michael Hoey and John Moffitt. Spike Jones, Jr. will produce. Additional awards may also be given for the three "juried areas" (no nominations) of Costumes for a Variety or Music Program, Voice-Over Performance and Individual Achievement in Animation. The announcement of these awards, if any, will be released in August. Additional awards may also be given for Engineering Development, Interactive Television Programming and the Governors Award. These awards, if any, will be announced later this month. A total of 433 separate nominations in 87 categories and areas, compiled by the independent accounting firm of Ernst & Young LLP, were distributed as follows: A&E – 24 NBC – 65 ABC – 33 Nickelodeon – 4 AMC – 1 PBS – 27 Bravo – 4 SCI FI – 4 Cartoon Network – 3 Showtime – 18 CBS – 44 Syndicated – 1 Comedy Central – 7 The History Channel – 3 Discovery Channel – 3 TNT – 4 Disney Channel – 1 UPN – 4 FOX – 31 USA – 9 FX – 7 VH-1 – 1 HBO – 124 WB – 2 IFC – 1 Commercials – 6 (No network affiliation) Lifetime Television – 2 The complete list of Primetime Emmy nominations and other Academy news and information is available for download from the Academy's web site, located at http://www.emmys.tv./downloads/ Nominations were made by active Academy members who voted for programs and other peer categories of their expertise. For example, performers, in addition to voting for programs, voted for performers, while writers voted for writers, directors for directors, etc. Peer panels made up of active Academy members will screen nominations during the month of August and, in secret ballot, select the Emmy winners.
