December 26, 2011 | By Diane Haithman, Special to the Los Angeles Times As the old joke goes: "How do you get to Carnegie Hall?" "Practice, practice." That punch line would have to be rewritten for vocal coach, performer and composer Ben Toth. Toth, 34, got to Carnegie Hall — and the Hollywood Bowl and Broadway — by helping other people practice, practice and practice some more. During a late November interview at a Los Feliz cafe, Toth — whose clients include Lea Michele, Taye Diggs, Josh Radnor, Wayne Brady, Christina Hendricks and Mandy Patinkin — was on a high from serving as musical director, arranger and backup singer for "Cheyenne Jackson's Cocktail Hour: Music From the 'Mad Men' Era" at Carnegie Hall" on Nov. 18. But there wasn't much time to relax and enjoy: Toth was also coaching Beau Bridges for his Broadway singing debut in "How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying." Bridges is stepping in for John Larroquette as corporate tycoon J.B. Biggley in January, and Toth had been working with him for about six weeks, including bicoastal Skype sessions when Toth's career took him to New York. Bridges, whose latest film, "The Descendants," is getting Oscar buzz, joins the cast Jan. 3, at the same time that Darren Criss replaces Daniel Radcliffe. Toth met the actor in 2009 on a production of "Guys and Dolls" at the Hollywood Bowl. Bridges' success in "Guys and Dolls" led to his being cast in "How to Succeed in Business." Bridges, 70, has acted on Broadway before ("Where's Daddy?," "Who's Who in Hell"), but this will be his first time singing on the Great White Way, and he wasn't going to do it without Toth.

MICHAEL IMPERIOLI: My dad busts his ass driving long shifts and commuting. So he’s not home much. Growing up, we watch Dog Day Afternoon together so many times I lose count. It’s him at his happiest. One day, when I was about 13, after dad’s been driving his bus in the Bronx, he bursts in the front door, out-of-his-mind excited. “I might be in a movie! Or at least my bus might be!” Turns out, he sees a movie getting shot on his route, it’s a movie called Fort Apache, The Bronx starring Paul Newman. And he drives by the actual camera. Maybe they can see his bus, too. That night, there’s this lightness in him, this energy. Not long after, he tries out for his first community theater production. And he gets in. It’s a courtroom drama, and he plays the court clerk. There are a lot of nights when he gets home from a 12-hour shift, changes out of his uniform, and heads right back out to rehearsal. I am very proud watching him. Amazed at his courage. Maybe that’s why he doesn’t stand in my way on that breezy and sunny September day. Today I’m thrilled to sit down with actor, director, writer, songwriter, Josh Radnor. Why don’t you introduce yourself and how you normally, how do you say what you do? Josh: Oh I just say actor, writer, director, songwriter, no I don’t. You know what, you’ve hit on something that I have difficulty with, which is saying what I do. The easiest thing for me to say I do is that I’m an actor, in that I went to grad school for acting at NYU, I’ve been a professional actor for over 20 years. Most people know me as an actor. But I’ve also written and directed two films, I’ve directed music videos, I’ve written plays and prose and now I’m a songwriter and I put out albums of original music. So I guess, and I try to avoid any sort of pretentious-sounding labels, but I think I’m a storyteller, and I just tell stories in whatever form suits the story I want to tell. Sometimes it’s a 90-minute movie, and sometimes it’s a three-minute song. Matt: I love it. I love it. All within the arts in many ways. Last week they premiered The Fortress Of Solitude, the best new musical of the year. It is bold, hugely entertaining, moving and thrillingly ambitious. Playwright Suzan-Lori Parks bids fair to create a sprawling multi-part epic to plant alongside August Wilson's monumental Century Cycle, one of the great achievements in theater history. Parts 4 through 9 (? or more?) can't come fast enough for me. Some of these sections and others have been workshopped before and seen by friends and the entire work here is presented by the Public and the American Repertory Theater. But this is my first experience seeing any portion. Tipping its hat to The Odyssey, what we have here are three parts set during and after the Civil War. In Part 1: A Measure Of A Man, the slave Hero (Sterling K. Brown) is debating whether to follow his master into battle.

Michael Imperioli plays Bennie Gazza, the owner of Cabaret Maxime, a nightclub in an old, red-light district where a group of colorful characters perform musical numbers, as well as burlesque and striptease acts. Bennie runs the cabaret like a tight family, dealing with each artist’s unique personality while taking care of his performer wife, Stella, who suffers from manic depression. When the once-decadent neighborhood starts to become gentrified, Bennie struggles to keep his club afloat. As the residents are being bought up and pushed out, Benny is violently threatened when he refuses to sell. The pressure builds to a dramatic climax as Benny is forced to take a stand against the powers that be. Michael Imperioli is best known for his Emmy-winning role as Christopher Moltisanti on the HBO television series, The Sopranos. In 1990, he made his film debut as Spider in Martin Scorsese's, Goodfellas. He has since appeared in more than 90 feature films and television series. He has worked with such notable directors and actors as Martin Scorsese, Spike Lee, Abel Ferrara, Peter Jackson, Walter Hill, Mary Harron, Cindy Sherman, Ben Gazzara, Robert De Niro, Rachel Weisz, Christopher Walken, Joe Pesci, Edie Falco, James Gandolfini, and many others.
