Stan was a highly motivated and creative entrepreneur, who expanded the family theatre business he took over in 1960 to become one of the largest theatre chains in the world. He is credited with many innovations that transformed the movie business, most notably, the creation of the multiplex cinema and the invention of the arm-rest cup holder. Purpose-built, multiple- screen, cinema entertainment complexes became Parkway Twin Theatres, the first Multiplex, The dominant force in exhibition in the late 20th century, growing a $2B annual industry in opened in Kansas City on July 12, 1963 1975 to a $6B industry in 1997. We’ve chosen to screen a film from every year we’ve been bringing the very best cinema to the good people of Edinburgh, and while it is tremendous fun looking back through the history of what has shown here, it was quite an undertaking going through all the old programmes and choosing what to show, and a bit of a personal journey for me as one who started coming here as a customer in the mid-80s (I know, I must have started very young...). At that time, I’d no idea that Filmhouse had only been in existence for less than 10 years – it seemed like such an established, essential institution and impossible to imagine it not existing in a city such as Edinburgh. My only hope is that the cinema is as important today as I felt it was then, and that the giants on whose shoulders we currently stand feel we’re worthy of their legacy. I hope you can join us for at least some of the screenings on this trip down memory lane... And now, back to the now.

    For Exhibitors October 12, 2020 Screendollars About Films, the Film Industry No. 138 Newsletter and Cinema Advertising Sparked by this year’s renewed interest in independent distributors and genre films, we celebrate the creativity of American International Pictures, the pioneer of mass-production, low-budget film making. AIP was founded in 1954 as American Releasing Corporation (ARC) by Samuel Arkoff, an entertainment lawyer, and James Nicholson, a former sales manager for Realart Pictures. They soon expanded into production so they could take full control of their product, both creatively and financially. AIP developed a checklist of creative elements to ensure a film’s appeal to their target youth audience, largely overlooked by studios of the day. Their ARKOFF formula, named after the founder, included these elements: Action, Revolution, Killing, Oratory, Fantasy and Fornication. AIP would frequently bundle multiple pictures to play as double features at the nearly 4000 drive-ins (Click to Play) operating in the US in the 50’s and 60’s. One of AIP’s famously prolific and successful directors, was Roger Corman, "The Pope of Pop Cinema", who established a cult following for himself and AIP through his adaptions of Edgar Allen Poe tales as horror films. Famously, AIP’s new project development began by creating the film’s title and movie poster, which was then market-tested to confirm interest before the screenwriter, director and cast were hired. Macbeth has found a long and productive life on Celluloid. The themes of this Bard’s play work in almost any genre, in any decade of any generation, and will continue to find their home on stage, in film, literature, and beyond. Macbeth can well be said to be one of Shakespeare’s most performed play and has enchanted theatre personalities and film makers. Much like other Shakespearean works, it holds within itself the most valuable quality of timelessness and volatility because of which the play can be reproduced in any regional background and also in any period of time. More than the localization of plot and character, it is in the cinematic visualization of Shakespeare’s imagery that a creative coalescence of the Shakespearean, along with the ‘local’ occurs. The present paper seeks to offer some notable (it is too difficult to document and discuss all) adaptations of Macbeth . The focus would be to provide introductory information- name of the film, country, language, year of release, the director, star-cast and the critical reception of the adaptation among audiences.
