Stan was a highly motivated and creative entrepreneur, who expanded the family theatre business he took over in 1960 to become one of the largest theatre chains in the world. He is credited with many innovations that transformed the movie business, most notably, the creation of the multiplex cinema and the invention of the arm-rest cup holder. Purpose-built, multiple- screen, cinema entertainment complexes became Parkway Twin Theatres, the first Multiplex, The dominant force in exhibition in the late 20th century, growing a $2B annual industry in opened in Kansas City on July 12, 1963 1975 to a $6B industry in 1997. He was a proud son of Kansas City, where AMC is based. Welcome Back - Looking Forward to a Brighter 2021 As theatres begin to re-open and the industry comes back to life, we take stock of the positive signs of what lies ahead. The movie business has been interrupted, but it is not broken. Despite the significant challenges this year, when new movies return to theatres, audiences will follow. When circumstances permit, people are going to say to themselves, “I have been stuck at home for months watching streaming, and I’m tired of that. Now I want go out with friends and family, see other people, and experience something fantastic." In fiction, they have historically played a significant role. Fictions of science continue to exert power via important multimedia platforms for considerations of the role of science and technology in our world. And, because of their importance for the development, ideologies and policies of any nation, these considerations can be correlated with the deliberation of the role of a nation in the world, including its internal and external images and imaginings. -

ALAN DE PELLETTE – Director | Producer | Writer Alan de Pellette is a director from Glasgow with wide ranging credits in TV and film. He began his career in radio and created the long running BBC Scottish comedy, OFF THE BALL, before moving into TV and a range of comedies for BBC Two, Three and BBC Scotland, including the award winning CHEWIN' THE FAT and the critically acclaimed OVERNITE EXPRESS & SHREDDED WEEK. Alan is currently producing a live action children’s television series of Julia Donaldson’s PRINCESS MIRROR BELLE for BBC Children’s Productions in Glasgow. As well as moving into drama, Alan has also made several documentaries for the BBC, including SCOTLAND'S GAME CHANGERS, which was nominated for both an RTS and Celtic Media Award in 2018. He has directed numerous single dramas, including MYSTIQUE NO 375, a children's drama for the BBC that screened in 15 countries around Europe during 2017 and 2018. In the last year, Alan has directed 15 episodes of Channel 4's ground breaking continuing drama, HOLLYOAKS, including major storylines on racism, far right grooming and domestic abuse. Alan has numerous film credits as a writer/director. His first short, THE AFICIONADO, was part of the UK Film Council scheme, '8½', under patron Peter Mullan. It screened in festivals around the world and is shown regularly on TV across Europe by Mini Movie Channel. He has made 4 other successful short films, including a 45’ portmanteau of connected stories, DECLARATIONS , inspired by the 60th anniversary of the UN Declarations of Human Rights. It premiered at the 2009 New York Independent Film Festival, where Alan won Best International Director. -

For Exhibitors October 12, 2020 Screendollars About Films, the Film Industry No. 138 Newsletter and Cinema Advertising Sparked by this year’s renewed interest in independent distributors and genre films, we celebrate the creativity of American International Pictures, the pioneer of mass-production, low-budget film making. AIP was founded in 1954 as American Releasing Corporation (ARC) by Samuel Arkoff, an entertainment lawyer, and James Nicholson, a former sales manager for Realart Pictures. They soon expanded into production so they could take full control of their product, both creatively and financially. AIP developed a checklist of creative elements to ensure a film’s appeal to their target youth audience, largely overlooked by studios of the day. Their ARKOFF formula, named after the founder, included these elements: Action, Revolution, Killing, Oratory, Fantasy and Fornication. AIP would frequently bundle multiple pictures to play as double features at the nearly 4000 drive-ins (Click to Play) operating in the US in the 50’s and 60’s. One of AIP’s famously prolific and successful directors, was Roger Corman, "The Pope of Pop Cinema", who established a cult following for himself and AIP through his adaptions of Edgar Allen Poe tales as horror films. Famously, AIP’s new project development began by creating the film’s title and movie poster, which was then market-tested to confirm interest before the screenwriter, director and cast were hired. Today’s independent producers have many lessons they can learn from the film entrepreneurs
