D. Cornell University 2018 Of Clouds and Bodies: Film and the Dislocation of Vision in Brazilian and Japanese Interwar Avant-gardes examines the political impact of film in conceptualizations of the body, vision, and movement in the 1920s and 1930s avant-gardes of Brazil and Japan. Through photographs, films, and different textual genres—travel diary, screenplay, theoretical essay, movie criticism, novel—I investigate the similar political role played by film in these “non-Western” avant-gardes in their relation to the idea of modernity, usually equivalent to that of the “West.” I explore racial, political, and historical entanglements that emerge when debates on aesthetic form encounters the filmic medium, theorized and experienced by the so-called “non-Western” spectator. Through avant-garde films such as Mário Peixoto’s Limite (1930), and Kinugasa Teinosuke’s A Page of Madness (1926); the theorizations of Octávio de Faria and Tanizaki Jun’ichirō; and the photographs and writings by Mário de Andrade and Murayama Tomoyoshi, this dissertation follows the clash between the desire for a universal and disembodied vision, and the encounter with filmic perception. I argue that the filmic apparatus, as a technology and a commodity, emphasizes an embodied and localized experience of vision and time that revealed the discourse on cultural-historical iii difference—the distinction between West and Rest, or modern and non-modern—as a suppressive modulator of material power dynamics embedded in racial, class, and gender hierarchies enjoyed by the cosmopolitan elite in the “peripheral” spaces.

    2019 Spring Semester Inside the Secret World of the Geisha Section 1 Instructor/Title Professor Arif Iqball 【Course Outline / Description】 Painted by Picasso, sculpted by Rodin, entertainers to Queen Elizabeth, Prince Charles, and US Presidents, yet the role and image of the Japanese Geisha has often been misinterpreted outside Japan, and has shaped Western stereotypes about Japan and Japanese women. Being historically closed in a world of secrecy, not many Japanese either have been able to get access to this world with its own rules and etiquette, and with very little documentation. This course examines the primary role of the Geisha in Japan as an artist and an entertainer encompassing a variety of important social, cultural, and historical elements. Leveraging the instructor’s personal connections and research, a field trip to a seasonal dance performance, and conversations with current Geisha, as well as use of academic literature and visual documentation including historical photographs, documentaries and movie representations, this course attempts to provide a complete cultural experience to the Asian and Japanese Studies student on the true role and place of these artists in Japanese culture, and in a traditional world which runs parallel (and yet is completely different than) to the modern Japanese world of manga, anime, and robots. In an era that largely avoids over-arching narratives, what are the grounds for, and aims of, setting the aesthetic, economic or technological histories of a given national cinema alongside those of other nations? In this essay, Prof. Richard Peña (Columbia University) examines the experiences of three distinct national cinemas̶those of France, Japan and Brazil̶that each witnessed the emer- gence of new movements within their cinemas that challenged both the aesthetic direction and industrial formats of their existing film traditions. For each national cinema, three essential factors for these “new move” move- ments are discussed: (1) a sense of crisis in the then-existing structure of relationships within their established film industries; (2) the presence of a new generation of film artists aware of both classic and international trends in cinema which sought to challenge the dominant aesthetic practices of each national cinema; and (3) the erup- tion of some social political events that marked not only turning points in each nation’s history but which often set an older generation then in power against a defiant opposition led by the young. Thus, despite the important and real differences among nations as different as France, Japan and Brazil, one can find structural similarities related to both the causes and consequences of their respective cinematic new waves. Like waves, academic approaches to various dis- personal media archives resembling small ciné- ciplines seem to have a certain tidal structure: mathèques, the idea of creating new histories based on sometimes an approach is “in,” fashionable, and com- linkages between works previously thought to have monly used or cited, while soon after that same little or no connection indeed becomes tempting.

A general at the end of the Chinese Ming Dynasty, he was a prominent leader of the movement opposing the Manchu Qing Dynasty, and in recovering Taiwan from Dutch colonial occupation in 1661. Honored as a hero in Japan, China, and Taiwan, he has been dramatized in many plays in various theatre forms in Japan (since about 1700), China (since 1906), and Taiwan (since the 1920s).
