It gives the details of all his films, including stories of Ollie's antics and inside information about the film-making processes. There's a wealth of inside information here.4 of 5 people found the following review helpful. Oliver Reed - Britain's Film ActorBy BoffinOliver Reed was a great, underrated film actor. In fact, he remains the only pure film actor in the history of the British film industry (he never trod the stage). However, as with Burton and O'Toole, Reed's penchant for hellraising and booze made him more of a figure for "the lads", where they still toast him in the pubs, years after his death on the film set of Gladiator. This undermined his standing as a perfomer on the silver screen, which is a shame. There have been two other books on his films, but they were rare UK publications. This latest release does an excellent job in discussing Reed and his films, not his private life. The films are presented chronologically, which makes it easy for the reader to follow. There are also comments from folks who worked with him, such as William Hobbs, who was the pre-eminent sword maestro from the Musketeer flicks. When I worked in the film industry, it was interesting to see how Ollie was viewed as a hellraiser in England, but as a cult film actor in the States. Tarantino used to talk about him when Quentin worked in a video store, and I remember folks from Universal still being angry that Oliver never accepted their offer to work in Hollywood. Oh yeah, that's another interesting item...Reed turned down JAWS and THE STING, because he didn't want to leave Britain. He was the only film actor who stayed, while the Connerys, Caines, and Moores bowed down to the American gods. All in all, this is a very good read and made me get out and buy some DVDs, so I could enjoy what the authors were describing. Or as Ollie himself used to say, "Bing Sings." Yeah.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Five StarsBy greengirl66Good book, comprehensive and very interesting. Lots of anecdotes about his films, costars, situations, etc. From the obscure 1958 Sonja Henie vehicle Hello London to the 2000 Academy Award winner Gladiator (released posthumously), the screen career of dynamic British actor Oliver Reed (1937-1999) is thoroughly documented in this illustrated filmography. Following a concise capsule biography, the authors chronologically list all 96 of Reed's films, among them The Curse of the Werewolf, Oliver!, The Devils, The Three Musketeers and Tommy. Each entry contains extensive cast and production credits, a synopsis, critical commentary and contemporary reviews. Included are forewords by actors Sir Christopher Lee and Ron Moody, and an afterword by Oliver Reed's frequent director Michael Winner. Additional comments by Reed's friends and coworkers Janette Scott, Catherine Feller, William Hobbs, Jennie Linden, Jimmy Sangster and Samantha Eggar provide fascinating and insightful offscreen glimpses of a major cinema icon. "it is about time such a book came out that concentrates on the fine performer that Oliver Reed was, not just his non- film escapades"--Little Shoppe of Horrors; "recommended"--ARBA.About the AuthorSusan D.
