Greetings, from myself and the Advisory Board of the Cattlemen’s Ball! We thank you for your continued sup- port of this great event to support finding a cure for cancer and promoting eating beef in a healthy diet.

This is the first time we have had a Ball in southwestern Nebraska, and what a beautiful place it is! We thank hosts Derek and Allison Sandman and Wayne and Chris Krausnick for undertaking this huge task of the 2019 Ball. I am sure they couldn’t have pulled this together without their loyal and dedicated co-chairs; Steve and Char Wallin, Ryan and Stephanie Stromberger, Nick and Kati Ladenburger, Joey and Myra Large, Shawn, Julie and Grant Jones, and Mick and Marlene Cox. Thank you also to the huge support of the volunteers who have aided the event with the donation of their time and efforts to “Round Up a Cure for Cancer.” Every one of you is price- less!

You, as attendees, are asked to please take time to enjoy Southwest Nebraska’s beauty and throughout the day, partake in the auctions, activities, and especially the meal of beef served in an effort to “Round Up A Cure For Cancer.”

As most know, Dr. Cowan is retiring from his position as Director of the Fred and Pamela Buffet Center the last part of June. We, as a Board and everyone here, wish him a very happy and stress free retirement! Thank you for your years of involvement with the Ball.

We are looking forward to seeing everyone again in 2020 when Scott and Pat Mueller host the Ball at a location north of Columbus, Nebraska, June 5-6th.

- Ray Bennett Advisory Board Chairman

9 We are so honored and excited to help host the 2019 Cattlemen’s Ball in Southwest Nebraska. We feel that we have selected an incredible group of Co-Chairs that will join with us to showcase SWNE, promote beef and raise money for cancer research. It is certain that our group collectively will be a strong asset to the success of the 2019 Ball and we look forward to seeing you all June 7-8, 2019.

- Derek & Allison 2019 Cattlemen’s Ball of Nebraska Hosts A little about the Sandmans... Derek and Allison Sandman reside in rural Wauneta, Nebraska, in the Frenchman River Valley. They own and operate Sandman Grow Yard, LLC., a cattle backgrounding feedlot, as well as farm primarily dryland corn and wheat. They are active in their community and support their children’s activities. Their children, Haylee (16, Sophomore), Alexa (15, Freshman) and Noah (12, 5th grade) participate in various sports and activities.

The kids are active in the family operation, helping with the calving, processing and other manual labor tasks. They also raise chickens for egg production. Derek has farmed all of his life, returning to the family operation after completing his education at Southeast Community College at Beatrice in 1995. Derek can be found sup- porting our local youth by coaching and sponsoring various sporting events as well as sharing his ag business background with our local high school youth through the job shadow/sharing event.

Allison graduated from the University of Nebraska - Lincoln with an Agri-Business degree in 1996. After col- lege, Allison worked in radio and then banking, serving First National Bank of McCook as Retail Banking Man- ager and after Wells Fargo purchased First Commerce Bank Shares, served as Branch Manager in McCook and Lincoln. Allison currently serves on the Wauneta-Palisade School Board as Board Secretary, ESU 15 Board as Vice-President, Wauneta-Palisade TeamMates as Program Coordinator, WP Bronco Booster Treasurer and P.E.O. Chapter FA Technology Contact.

10 Welcome to the Krausnick Ranch on the beautiful Frenchman River! We are delighted to host each of you for the 2019 Cattlemen’s Ball helping us Round Up a Cure for Cancer! We are grateful to our entire Co-Chair team for their countless hours and dedication to this wonderful event. We couldn’t have done it without each of them. We hope that you, our guests, will have a memorable weekend enjoying our southwest Nebraska flair! Now lets all join together and raise money for cancer research!

- Wayne & Chris 2019 Cattlemen’s Ball of Nebraska Hosts A little about the Krausnicks...

Wayne and Chris Krausnick were born and raised in Chase County, Nebraska. Wayne attended and graduated from Wauneta High School and Chris attended and graduated from Chase County High School. They have two boys, Jesse (14) and Wyatt (9), along with niece, Brooke, who just turned 18 in March.

The Krausnicks are very active in several aspects of agriculture. They have been ranching for 21 years. They farm and have a custom haying business in the summer. 12 years ago the Krausnicks became involved in custom feeding cattle in a small feedlot northwest of Imperial, then, three years ago, had the opportunity to purchase our own feed yard only two miles west of Imperial.

When not working, Wayne and Chris are busy chasing after their three kids who are involved in everything from school sports to all different activities in 4-H and FFA. Wayne enjoys being active in the Imperial Young Farmers & Ranchers organization while Chris stays busy being on the Chase County Fair Board; she has served on the board for the past 16 years. In between all of this, the family likes to help out volunteering at the local movie theater a couple times a year.

When there is extra time the family really likes to go camping at Enders Lake in the summer and go the beauti- ful Rocky Mountains for snow skiing in the winter. The Krausnick family feels very fortunate to be able to all be so involved in our ag-based life and they love every minute of it!

11 Mick and Marlene Cox have farmed and ranched in Hayes County all their lives, both being born and raised there. They have purebred An- gus, both commercial and registered, and have been involved, with their family, for many years with Mill Bar Angus Production sales. Their family consists of six children and 17 grandchildren, all of whom live in and around the area and are working in agriculture related occupa- tions. Their family has enjoyed being involved and participating in 4-H and high school athletics. They are happy to support the efforts to help fund the research for cancer treatment and a cure.

Shawn and Julie Jones along with their son, Grant are lifelong resi- dents of Southwest Nebraska. Grant is the 5th generation on the ranch that runs on the Dundy/Chase County line. We raise regis- tered Angus and SimAngus cattle and have an annual production sale. We are very excited to co-chair the Cattlemen’s Ball of Ne- braska along with our two daughters. Cancer touches all our lives at some point, or another, so please join us in the fight against cancer.

Nick and Kati Ladenburger farm in SW Nebraska with Nick’s Dad and brother. They raise dryland corn and wheat along with having a cow/ calf operation. Nick is a graduate of LEAD Class 26 and is an active member in various organizations in the community and church. He has always known that agriculture is what he wanted to do with life and bought his first combine while still in high school. Kati grew up on a Wyoming cattle ranch, but moved to Nebraska when she and Nick got engaged. She enjoys helping around the farm, but mainly spends her time raising their five kids - Haley (10), Scot (9), Molly (7), John (4) and Emery (3). She is also an active volunteer with 4-H and does her part in the community by serving on the local rural fire board. Nick and Kati are excited and honored to be co-chairs for the 2019 12 Cattlemen’s Ball and look forward to the experience! Joey and Myra were raised in SW Nebraska and have lived in the area all of their lives. They have three grown children and five grandchildren; transitioning from parent to grandparent has been a joy. They are fol- lowers of Nebraska sports and try to go to the Grandkids activities as much as possibleg Joey has been in banking since 1977 and is looking forward to retiring and being his own boss in the next ten years, help- ing with the family farm and ranch operation and doing some travel- ing. Myra retired from her employment and is enjoying being back at home catching up on all of the projects that have not been done. Both have been involved in many community organizations throughout the years. They are serving as Treasurer and Co-Treasurer for the 2019 Cattlemen’s Ball and are helping with other committees as needed.

Ryan and Stephanie Stromberger of Champion, NE, live on the family farm with their two children, Conner (9) and Taya (7). Ryan is a third generation operator with his father, Bart, two brothers, Brock and Tanner, and sister, Jordan. Stromberger Farms grows irrigated corn, wheat and edible bean production, cow/calf production and cattle feeding opera- tions. Ryan’s main focus is managing the feedyard. He serves on the Chase County Fair Board and past FSA board member. Stephanie was born and raised in Central City on her family’s farm. She owns the women’s gym in Imperial, serves on the Freedoms Foundation Board, helps with Christ Academy at the Lutheran church, is involved in livestock showing with their kids and volunteers anywhere she can. They are honored to serve as Co-Chair for the 2019 Cattleman ball as Cancer has touched both our lives.

Steve and Charlotte Wallin, of Imperial, have been active in agriculture for 20 years. Steve is a third generation farmer with a focus primarily on corn and wheat. The Wallins have three kids, Matalie, age 14, Ma- son, age 12, and Kadence, age 9. Steve serves on the Imperial Rural Fire District Board and Chase County Schools Board and was a Mem- ber of Nebraska LEAD Group 25. Char is on the board for the local Teammates chapter and active in Awanas. Char is an avid volunteer whatever she can. For now, their “hobbies” are attending sporting events year round, 4-H, Awanas, backyard chickens, playing catch and maybe a lake day, or two, in the summer. The family, as a whole, loves the “cycle” of ag: watching something grow and come to frui- tion, whether it be a crop or livestock.

13 Each year as I begin this message, I reflect on memories of attending the Cattlemen’s Ball. This year is no different, but since it is my last as the director of the Fred & Pamela Buffett Cancer Center, I am even more nostalgic. The Cattlemen’s Ball is truly special to me, because it introduced my family and me to Nebraska. We attended the 1999 Cattlemen’s Ball in Lexington at the home of Dr. Joe and Diane Jeffrey after I interviewed to be the director of the Fred & Pamela Buffett Cancer Center (formerly the Eppley Cancer Center). My wife, two daughters and I were im- pressed with the sense of community, welcoming kindness and warm hospitality shown to us. We were convinced that a state with this kind of people was an excellent place to raise our daughters, who were 9 and 12 years old at the time. I am proud to say that this is the twenty-first Cattlemen’s Ball I have attended. I have been fortunate to attend the Cattlemen’s Ball in a variety of settings that have showcased this beautiful state: from the rolling fields of southeast Nebraska, to the gorgeous Sandhills region; from the Niobrara River to the rugged hills of Banner County in western Nebraska. While the scenery each year has changed, one thing hasn’t: the incredibly generous people of this state who are passionately dedicated to cancer research. I feel fortunate for the friendships and relationships I have formed over the years with numerous people who have shown me what hard work and generosity are all about. I want to express my gratitude to the people of Wauneta and the surrounding communities who worked together for so many months to make the 2019 Cattlemen’s Ball an unforgettable event. Thank you to this year’s co-hosts, Derek and Allison Sandman and Wayne and Chris Krausnick and their families, for your hospitality, commitment and passion for the Cattlemen’s Ball. I would also like to express my gratitude to the event chairs for your hard work: Steve and Char Wallin, Ryan and Stephanie Stromberger all of Imperial; Shawn, Julie and Grant Jones of Benkelman; Nick and Kati Ladenburger of Stratton; Mick and Marlene Cox of Hayes Center; and Joey and Myra Large of Wauneta. My gratitude to all the past and present members of the Cattlemen’s Ball Advisory Board for your leadership and support of this truly unique event, and all that you do for cancer research in Nebraska. I would also like to thank all of the committee chairs, committee members, and the thousands of volunteers for your time and efforts over the years. Finally, on behalf of the faculty, staff and patients of the Fred & Pamela Buffett Cancer Center, we thank each of you for supporting the Cattlemen’s Ball. Everyone who generously gives to the Cattlemen’s Ball is a partner with the Buffett Cancer Center in fighting cancer. Every dollar the Fred & Pamela Buffett Cancer Center receives from the Cattlemen’s Ball is used to support cancer research in the form of pilot projects, purchasing laboratory equipment, clinical trials or recruiting new faculty. Your generous support is making breakthroughs in the fight against cancer a reality and, with your help we will “Round Up a Cure!” Thank you again for the many memories over the years! Although I will be stepping down as the Cancer Center direc- tor, I look forward to attending many more Cattlemen’s Ball events and seeing friends each year.

Best regards,

- Kenneth H. Cowan, M.D., Ph.D. Director, Fred & Pamela Buffett Cancer Center 14 Welcome to the 22nd Annual Nebraska Cattlemen’s Ball!

The Cattlemen’s Ball is a time-honored tradition that brings those from across Nebraska together to celebrate agriculture, the backbone of our state’s economy. As you all know, beef production is the largest single industry in Nebraska and is vital to growing our state. We are first in the nation in beef exports, second in the nation for all cattle and calves, and we are home to the top cattle county in America.

Nebraska has a deep, rich history that is rooted in agriculture. The farmers and ranchers that first settled Nebras- ka were our state’s original conservationists. Their grit and determination transformed what was once considered to be the Great American Desert into some of the most valuable agricultural land in the world.

Nebraska is the best place in the world because of our people. Nebraskans share the values of hard work, problem-solving, and selflessness. These are values that our agricultural pioneers passed down through the gen- erations. We’ve seen these values demonstrated in how Nebraskans have stepped up to help their neighbors in need after the flooding that devastated much of the Good Life. As we worked with Nebraskans in crisis, I was often overcome with deep pride at how many people were selflessly giving their time, treasure, and talent to help their fellow Nebraskans. After seeing the true spirit of Nebraska in our people, I know we will recover and rebuild better than ever because we are truly #NebraskaStrong.

I have had the pleasure of attending the Cattlemen’s Ball for many years, and each event has been uniquely special because of the immense commitment of the host family. A special thank you to the Sandman family this year for everything they’ve done to create such a special weekend on their land near Enders Dam for this important cause. The Cattlemen’s Ball is unique in that it is volunteer led and 90 percent of the event’s proceeds will benefit the Fred & Pamela Buffett Cancer Center in Omaha, which is helping Nebraska become a leader in cancer treatment research. The remaining 10 percent is donated to local health and wellness programs.

Again, thank you for your generosity to this charitable effort, and thank you for your contribution to the beef in- dustry that grows Nebraska. Each and every one of you are part of finding a cure for cancer. Working together, we can and will find a cure for this horrible disease.

Here’s to another successful Nebraska Cattlemen’s Ball!

Sincerely, Pete Ricketts Governor 15 John Soukup serves as Master of Ceremonies for numer- ous events across the state, including the Cattlemen’s Ball of Nebraska in 2012 and 2013. He has spent more than 20 years as a radio broadcaster, and his background also includes work in public relations/marketing, and currently works as a Field Agent for Knights of Columbus Insurance serving Lincoln and east central Nebraska. He and his wife of more than 30 years live in Lincoln.

Allison Fees Varah started painting LIVE for her church 12 years ago. Soon she found it was a way to help noble causes at galas and fundraisers throughout the state. Since that time Varah has painted for March of Dimes, Clin- ics with a Heart and Husker Baseball to name a few. Her art hangs in many homes including the home of Chancel- lor Ronnie Green, Matt Davison, and the parents of Darin Erstad,. She is a sculptor and muralist with several public pieces in Nebraskaand surrounding states. She has been interviewed on NPR, featured in NebraskaLife, and was the Lincoln Arts Council’s “Emerging Artist”. Allison lives with her husband and two kids in Ansley, Nebraska and teaches art at Litchfield Public Schools. Her art can be viewed at her website: allisonvarah.com or her Facebook: “Allison Varah, Artist”.

Meteorologist Tim Reith is originally from northern and in fact grew up watching KHGI/NTV as a child. Tim states that his love and fascination with weather arrived at a young age while growing up on the family farm. With an open field to the west of his farmhouse Tim was able to watch storms roll in and this was the only spark needed to propel him into the field of meteorology.

16 On behalf of the 2019 Cattlemen’s Ball of Nebraska host families, board of directors and committee mem- bers, we want to extend our sincere thanks to those listed below. They selflessly provided fantastic meals for our volunteers from the first day of set up to the last day of clean up for the 2019 Cattlemen’s Ball.

Certain artists just seem to have an innate sense of what it takes to please an audience. Clay Walker is one of those artists. Whether on stage or in the recording studio, Walker never gives less than a hundred percent, and it’s that kind of dedicated work ethic combined with God-given talent that have made him one of the most success ful country acts of the past decade. He first topped the Billboard country singles chart in 1993 with “What’s It to You” and followed with his second consecutive No. 1 hit, “Live Until I Die.” Since then he’s placed 31 titles on Billboard’s singles chart including such additional chart toppers as “Dreaming with my Eyes Open,” “If I Could Make Living,” “This Woman and This Man,” and “Rumor Has It.” (The latter two songs each spent two weeks at the summit.) He’s enjoyed his share of success at the cash registers and has consistently been one of the busiest artists on the road. He’s scored four platinum-selling albums, signifying sales of a million units, and two gold albums, discs that sold over 500,0000 units. Walker says he knew early that he wanted to be a country recording artist. When he was only 16-years-old, and working nights as a desk clerk at a Super 8 Motel, he took a tape of a song he wrote to a nearby radio station. The disc jockey told him it was against corporate policy to play such tapes on the air. “I was heartbroken, but when I left the studio and got in my car–and I remember it was about 6:30 in the morning– as I was driving away from the radio station and he said, “Folks, I’m not supposed to do this, but this song is just too good to pass up. This song was written by a hometown boy, his name is Clay Walker!’ He spun it and I could not believe it. It was one of the highlights of my whole career. Even to this day, when I think about the one moment in time, it said to me: ‘This is what you’re going to be!’ That defined it. I knew with no question, that was it.” In 1993, his first single on Giant, “What’s It To You,” flew up the chart and landed at No. 1. His smooth, evocative voice and energetic stage presence quickly established Walker as the lat- est export to find national acclaim and a lengthy string of hits has followed. However, the Houston resident has never strayed far from his Texas roots or the Lone Star lifestyle. In fact, one of the accomplishments Walker is most proud of is having placed seventh in the cutting horse competition at the Houston Livestock Rodeo, the largest rodeo in the United States. He took the prize with his horse Maddie. It’s an impressive feat, made even more special because Walker was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis in 1996. “If you’d asked me when I was diagnosed that first day if I would still be alive, I would have said ‘No’ because that’s what the doctor’s said,” he admits. “Here I am, and actually I’m probably healthier than I was [when I was diag- nosed.]” Clay set his mind to overcome the obstacles MS set before him. Since then, he has founded Band Against MS (BAMS) to fight the disease and has raised upwards of $5,000,000 for the cause. After more than a decade in the national spotlight, Clay Walker believes the best is yet to come. “I trust my gut more than ever now,” he says. “I definitely don’t feel like a rook- ie, but at the sameof me. time, I believe I think if the goodbest years Lord wantsof my recordingit, who’s going career to are stop ahead it?”

35 Lexi Larsen - native Nebraskan, soulful country crooner, entertaining performer and— the next big thing!

There are a lot of ways to describe up and coming country music sen- sation Lexi Larsen, who is collecting accolades and fans on her way up the charts, but there’s certainly no replacement for seeing her perform and hearing her breathtaking music firsthand. This small town girl turned Nashville songstress, is currently making music and writing songs with the boomtown’s top songwriters. Her first single, “You Can Leave,” rose steadily up the charts, reaching 37 on the Music Row Chart and 53 on Billboard Indicator—- an impressive feat for any indie artist. Lexi Larsen is proving she’s the real deal—the singer has sold out shows in Nashville and was chosen as the first Brand Ambassador for Durango Boots. Lexi has been performing at fairs and festivals and has opened for Jon Pardi, Dwight Yoakam, Phil Vassar, Restless Heart, Em- erson Drive, Love & Theft, Ricochet, Ronnie Milsap and the Dirty River Boys. She also was invited to sing the Star Spangled Banner for the National Finals Rodeo in Las Vegas, performed at the famed Venetian, and traveled overseas captivating crowds in Xian, China! Lexi was named as One to Watch by CMA Magazine and was just awarded Female Vocalist of the Year at the IHeart Rocky Mountain Country Music Awards. Since the release of her first single, radio sta- tions all over the country are tuning in to hear what’s next.

Every great party deserves a great “After Party!” The 2019 Cattlemen’s Ball has that covered with the booking of the locally popular and talented country rock Brett Alan Band. Brett Alan Band will close the “Ball” in the Saloon Tent, following Clay Walker, Saturday night, June 8, 2019, at the Wayne and Chris Krausnick Ranch, near Enders Reservoir, west of Wauneta, NE. McCook local and Nashville Recording Artist Brett Alan (Schmitz) is an up-and- coming singer, songwriter, and recording artist. With the recent release of his third and latest album, self-titled, “Brett Alan,” Brett’s music speaks to his roots of grow- ing up in the Nebraska Sand Hills. The first single released from the album, “You’re My Favorite Song,” has found radio airplay with both mainstream and independent radio stations. “Brett Alan is an amazing Nebraska artist with national potential,” said Jesse Ste- vens, director of Coyote Country radio station. “We are proud to be playing his release ‘You’re My Favorite Song’ on Coyote Country and our sister stations across Nebraska.”

The band’s music is a music lover’s blend of country and ‘80s classics--influ- enced by artists such as Jason Aldean, Eric Church, Gary Allan, Gretchen Wilson, The Band Perry, Justin Moore, Fleetwood Mac, John Cougar, The Rolling Stones, The Steve Miller Band, Lynyrd Skynyrd, AC/DC and many more. They have been known to croon their blues now and then with some Stevie Ray Vaughan, Kenny Wayne Shepherd, and Jimmie Hendrix. The band has opened for big names such as LoCash, David Nail, Confederate Railroad, Bart Crow, and Colt Ford.

Brett Alan band members include all local McCook talent with Alan himself as lead vocalist/acoustic guitar; Jon Reiners, lead/rhythm guitar; Jeff Gleason, lead guitar; Angie Reiners, keyboard/vocals; Craig Francis, bass guitar; Gerry Hunter, percussionist; and Richard Stull, sound engineer. Francis, formerly of Cambridge, is the only band member who travels to play with the group as he resides in Colorado Springs. “We are very honored that we were thought of. It’s a privilege to be performing after such a well-known country artist as Clay Walker,” band member Angie Reiners said. 36 Sometimes you run for swag. Sometimes you run for the pure joy of feel- ing the ground beneath your feet and the wind in your face. Sometimes you run for even better reasons. On June 8th, join us on a run that will help ac- complish something better, the battle against cancer. The Rawhide Run is sponsored by Medica, a regional health plan based in Minneapolis, and will be taking place at the Enders Golf Course. The registration fee is only $25 and is open to anyone that wants to come out and support a great cause! All proceeds go to fund the fight against cancer! On top of that, we invite you to share the reason you are running. Perhaps you are running in memory of someone that lost the battle with cancer, or maybe it’s for someone who is still fighting. Maybe you are celebrating the fact that you beat cancer. Whatever your WHY is, we want to use it to mo- tivate others during the race. We will be placing signs along the race route with your WHY to help encourage the runners and give everyone a reason to finish! After the race is over, we will be placing these signs along the walk- ing path leading to the Cattlemen’s Ball event site. Come run with us. Hear the gravel crunch beneath your feet and feel the wind in your face as you run for the joy of helping others in the fight against cancer. 38 39 40 43 H.C. 50 51 This year, the History Tent highlights the Western Cattle Trail of the late 1800s; Massacre Canyon Battle; Grand Duke Alexis Royal Buffalo Hunt; and Custer in southwest Nebraska/northwest Kansas. Displays will also showcase the local frontier history of Chase, Dundy, Hayes and Hitchcock counties.

presenters: GARY & MARGARET KRAISINGER Authors of “The Western Cattle Trail 1874-1897: It’s Rise, Collapse, and Revival” along with several other books and articles on cattle drives and cattle trails reaching from Texas to Nebraska and Kansas and points beyond. Gary and Margaret will share tales from the trail with a keen knowledge of the cattle drive trails that traversed this four-county region.

JEFF BARNES Historian, author and fifth-generation Nebraskan, Jeff Barnes is a board trustee of the Nebraska State Historical Society, past chairman of the Nebraska Hall of Fame Commission, and former marketing director for the Durham Museum. Jeff is the author of “The Great Plains Guide to Custer,” “Forts of the Northern Plains,” “The Great Plains Guide to Buffalo Bill,” and 150@150: Nebraska’s Landmark Buildings at the State’s Sesquicentennial.

DON KELLER Local historian and Hitchcock County resident, Don has worked tirelessly to keep the story of the Massacre Canyon Battle and the region’s Native American heritage alive. He operates the Massacre Canyon Visitor Center near the Massacre Canyon Monument east of Trenton. Don will tell the story of this last battle between Great Plains tribes in 1873 as well as giving insights into the Pawnee and Sioux cultures.

WAYNE MINTLING Southwest Nebraska native and resident, Wayne Mintling will re-create his colorful portrayal of Gen. Phil Sheridan who played host to the Grand Duke Alexis/Buffalo Bill buffalo hunt held in 1872 near present day Hayes Center.

KIRK SHAPLAND ‘Buffalo Bill’ Cody will come to life when award-winning reenactor Kirk Shapland of Kansas takes to the stage. Based on Cody’s own 1879 autobiography, Kirk’s presentations are as close to Bill’s opinion of himself as we will ever get. With 12 years experience as a reenactor at the Fort Hays State Historic site and with 3 years experience at Fort Larned National Park Site, Kirk will be recognized by southwest Nebraskans as Buffalo Bill from the Grand Duke Alexis Rendezvous that has been held near Hayes Center.

52 THE WESTERN CATTLE TRAIL After the Civil War, as demand grew for beef in the northern states, herds of Texas cattle were driven north to marketing points in eastern Nebraska. Settlement by homesteaders, however, forced the trail further west each year. Beginning in 1875, the Union Pacific Railroad selected Ogallala as its main shipping point. During the following decade, thousands of longhorn cattle were trailed through southwest Nebraska to the shipping site in Ogallala and points beyond along a group of routes known as the Texas Cattle Trail.

Beginning in Texas the trail turned northward through the In- dian Territory into western Kansas. From Dodge City on the Ar- kansas River, the trail continued climbing a ladder of rivers to Buffalo Station, Kansas, entering Nebraska in Hitchcock County, angling northwest through Hayes, Chase and Perkins Counties. The hardest day’s drive for the trail-weary men and cattle along that route was the 30 miles from the head of Stinking Water Creek in southern Perkins County to Ogallala; it was the longest and driest drive of the trip.

In 1876 over 60,000 Texas cattle were driven over the trail, and between 1879 and 1884 over 100,000 cattle made the trip each year. Prior to 1880, the main Texas-Ogallala Trail entered Nebraska near present day Culbertson in Hitchcock County, but, with the influx of homesteaders, the trail was pushed ever further west, with herds later entering Nebraska in far western Dundy County. By 1881 a canyon near Haigler became known as Texas Trail Canyon and a checkpoint was established there in 1883-84, where the cattle were checked for brands and disease. It is said that 150,000 cattle were moved through western Dundy County in 1886, one of the last years of the trail drives.

In Nebraska, there were seven routes of the Texas Trail. Cattle drives could only advance about 20 miles per day before needing to stop for rest and water. Ranches near springs and rivers of- fered valuable refuge to drovers making the journey.

From Texas Trail Canyon cattle were trailed north on the Wal- lace Branch of the Texas Trail into Chase County passing near Champion and north of Imperial to the T.B. Webster 76 Ranch Spring and Corral. The location of the Thomas Webster ranch along Spring Creek 5 ½ miles north of Imperial, with its limestone corral, gave the drovers and their herds the last dependable op- portunity to find water before their two-day, 40-mile trip to Ogallala on that route. Being an enterprising rancher, Webster traded healthy animals for sore-footed animals, which he then nursed back to health and traded to the next trail boss. The stone corral was part of the Webster enterprise and is one of the last of its kind in existence. Webster used it for dehorning and branding the new cattle with his “Quarter Circle W” brand, the oldest registered brand in Chase County.

57 The “Calf-For-A-Cure” program invites and encourages any and all Nebraskans, regardless of their in- volvement in the beef industry, to take part in fundraising efforts exclusively supporting cancer research.

A donation of $1,000 will buy a feeder calf, this will be combined with other donors to purchase a pen(s) of feeder cattle. A donation of $600 will pay to feed that feeder calf. (The “Calf-For-A Cure” program goal is to purchase 300 head.) The cattle will be placed on feed in a local Southwest Nebraska feedlot. This will allow for the full value of the finished animals by April 2019 to be contributed to the 2019 Cattlemen’s Ball of Nebraska. Because the group values the investments being made in this program, the cattle will be price-protected and insured. All donors will be recognized in the official Cattlemen’s Ball of Nebraska program and will receive a special lanyard to wear during the 2019 Ball event.

Ninety percent of the funds raised are given to the Fred & Pamela Buffett Cancer Center in Omaha, Ne- braska for cancer research, and the remaining 10% stays in our local communities health organizations.
