Malland 2021 Abstract of Dissertation Death, Discipline, and the Dead: Biopolitical Rhetoric in Early Modern English Texts Death, Discipline, and the Dead: Biopolitical Rhetoric in Early Modern English Texts locates allusions to the biopolitical culture of Early Modern England within popular English texts. Through my examination of the period’s fascination with death—public executions, newly- authorized anatomies—and the ways in which death, as well as the treatment of the dead, was authorized by and supported the ideological aims of the state, my research identifies how those themes carry over into the most popular works of the day, reviewing instances of both verbal and nonverbal rhetoric across genres to find allusions to biopower — or, state control of the biological. I argue that biopower extends to the dead, even in their silence, and is evidenced in early modern literature, and that biopolitical rhetoric — such as allusions to gallows, gallows rhetoric, and anatomical discourse — is detectable across genres of entertainment, including sermons, prose fiction, plays, and anatomy publications. This project reads works by John Donne, Thomas Nashe, William Shakespeare, and early modern anatomists to reveal how these authors, like me, are interested in the death culture of early modern England and how that culture contributes to their concepts of English nationalism, the female body, citizenship, religion, absolute submission, and discipline. I pair drama and historiography in order to negotiate the question of early modem untimely deaths. Rather than determining once and for all what it meant to die an untimely death in early modem England, I argue here that one answer to this question requires an understanding of the imagined relationship between individuals and the broader unfolding of history by which they were imagined to be shaped, which they were imagined to shape, or from which they imagined to be alienated. I assume here that drama-particularly historically-minded drama - is an ideal object to consider when approaching such vexed questions, and I also assume that the problematic of untimely deaths provides a framework in which to ask about the historico-culturally specific relationships that were imagined to obtain between subjects and history. While it is critically commonplace to assert that early modem drama often stages the so-called "modem" subject, I argue here that early modem visions of the subject are often closely linked to visions of that subject's place in the world, particularly in the world that is recorded by historiographers as a world within and of history.

    Hellish Enfleshment Embodying Anti-Catholicism in Early Modern English Culture Doctor of Philosophy Lachlan Malone B.C.A. (Hons) 2015 Abstract This dissertation focuses on a term that I call “hellish enfleshment”: early modern English descriptions of Catholicism that connect anti-papal sentiment to the human body. I examine this term in the work of preachers, poets, political writers, monarchs, and playwrights who not only approach anti-Catholic discourse through corporeal metaphors, but also attempt to link Catholicism with malevolence, disease, political dissension, and discordant sound. Exploring the significance of the human body in anti-papal writing, I investigate how a range of early modern texts located in differing spheres enflesh dramatists’ conceptions of the Catholic body in their immediate historical setting. The embodiment of anti-Catholic discourse, I argue, occurs within the early modern English playhouse, as it is in this locale that playwrights attempt to affect playgoers’ bodies through sensory phenomena inexorably shaped by contemporary anti-Catholic attitudes. Examining several dramas that explicitly embody anti-papal discourse, the majority of this thesis analyses texts that engage with early modern corporeality through literal and metaphoric allusions to the body: Barnabe Barnes’s The Devil’s Charter (1607), Thomas Dekker’s The Whore of Babylon (1606), the anonymous Lust’s Dominion (c. 1600), and Shakespeare’s Hamlet (c. 1600). These plays, I argue, engage with the human body or reflect on its role in regard to fashioning anti-Catholic sentiment. Throughout this thesis, I attempt to examine discrete moments and cultural idiosyncrasies in these playtexts, utilising contemporary religious, medical, and political works to investigate the experiential qualities of an anti-Catholic discourse whilst contextualizing this evidence through references to early modern literature.

They may enter the public consciousness and achieve lasting fame; or they may simply be easy to memorise. Many of the poems in this anthology lie in the first category. The collection includes some of the best-known poems in English – and possibly the most famous single poem in the case of Wordsworth’s Daffodils – as well as others that were once widely known but are now remembered chiefly for their first lines. The boy stood on the burning deck, by Felicia Hemans, is one of these, as is Byron’s The Assyrian came down like a wolf on the fold. Others in the collection are little known. However, all the works here, whether famous or not, have been chosen for their memorability in the second sense, of being easy to learn by heart – whether because of catchy rhythm, rhyme, meaning, or all three. The longest poem here is Grey’s Elegy Written in a Country Churchyard, of which even a few stanzas are worth memorizing; many are much shorter. Why bother to learn poetry? Sometimes it seems you have little choice; lines stick in the head as soon as you read them. Others take more effort, but if you memorise a favourite poem, it may then stay with you – like an unobtrusive but sympathetic friend – for life. Only one poem by each poet is included in this anthology. Although this necessitated some difficult choices, it means that a wide range of poets is represented.

These scaffold speeches became popular during the sixteenth-century and were often printed in “chapbook” or pamphlet form for those unable to attend the actual execution. The purpose of this thesis is to examine how scaffold performances evolved during the course of the sixteenth-century in response to legal, cultural, and religious changes. In forming their last speeches, convicted traitors and heretics projected an identity to the crowd and the scaffold authorities; they died either as repentant political traitors, Protestant martyrs, or Catholic martyrs. Those who died for crimes against the state came to give fundamentally different speeches from those who died for crimes against the state religion. Religious traitors and heretics also developed two distinct formulas for their scaffold performances depending on whether they were Catholic or Protestant.
