For those of you who will prefer the electronic copy over the paper copy, please let us know your preference. Eliminating the paper copy will help the club not only save the printing expense but also save postage. These savings will be used by the club to help support other club functions such as the Fall Colors Tour and our annual “School’s Out” show. In today’s economy every penny helps. For those of you who may be interested in back issues of the newsletter, please be aware that back issues are posted on the club web site trailing the current issue by twelve months. For those of you interested in attending the AMO Nationals this year, it is imperative that you make your hotel reservations as soon as possible. We have just recently been made aware that there is a NASCAR function scheduled at the same time. This means that not only the host hotel will be fully booked but other hotels and motels in the area will be at capacity. The events schedule on the club web site is constantly being updated. Many favorite shows are now listed with current dates, and a number of new shows are now listed. This resource is an addi- tional benefit of club membership, so please feel free to take advan- tage of it. If you have a favorite show or cruise-in that you would like to see on the events schedule, please forward that information to Ken Walker, our club webmaster. Union Ave Alliance, Ohio 44601 Ph: 330-823-6719 Fax: 330-823-9711 Pacer arrives at Collectable Automobile Dale Verveka It had to happen sooner or later. The much maligned Pacer produced by AMC from 1975 to 1980 is the subject of a detailed ten page feature in Collectable Automobile magazine. This fine glossy bi-monthly publication for April 2009 is a must have for any Pacer fan. News stand price is a lofty $9.95 but worth every penny. The article includes over thirty pictures including conceptual pictures of a Pacer as well as a four door that was never produced. The story chronicles the effort of product chief Gerald Meyers to improve market coverage of the AMC line of cars. From drawing board to production the story is told. The problems encoun- tered including along the way include the disappearance of the rotary engine planned to power the car, effects of governmental edicts on the initial design as well as gas prices and the economy of the United States at that time. These issues weighed heavily on the creation of America’s “first wide, small car” Most agree that the Pacer was American Motors final “clean sheet” car design. Dealer brochures were quick to point out the car’s spacious interior with pictures of a competitor’s compact car being driven into a mock up of a Pacer (shown). One other interesting concept was the four inch longer passenger door to ease entry for back seat passengers. Patrick Foster tells the story comprehensively and includes selected specifications in addition to an informative chart on models, prices and production. All in the entire article is a nice addition to any AMC Pacer owner’s literature collection. SS AMX in Hemmings Muscle Machines By Shaune Zavertnik In the March issue of Hemmings Muscle Machines (has a pink Challenger on the cover) there is a feature article of eight pages on Rick Rileys’ SS AMX and even a list of the 52 cars, 12 of which are still unknown or lost. This magazine routinely features AMC friendly articles. The content and size of the magazine for $15 a year cannot be beat; In fact you can even make money on them. I recently have seen the older issues on Ebay for $3 to $20 each. Not a bad investment, huh? Think Spring! By Shaune Zavertnik Okay, I know St. Patrick’s Day is coming up and spring is around the corner even if our current weather does not reflect it.

  • AMC Straight-6 Engine 1 AMC Straight-6 Engine
AMC straight-6 engine 1 AMC straight-6 engine The American Motors Corporation (AMC) straight-6 family of engines was used in AMC passenger cars and Jeep vehicles from 1964 through 2006. 195.6 American Motors' first straight-six engine was the 195.6 cu in (unknown operator: u'strong' L). It was produced from 1958 through 1965 in both overhead valve (OHV) and flathead (L-head) side-valve versions. Sometimes referred to as the 196 engine, this engine was originally designed by Nash in the 1930s as a flathead, and redesigned as an OHV engine in 1956. The flathead version was discontinued for 1956–1957, but reemerged in 1958 as the economy engine for the "new" Rambler American. When the engine was changed to an OHV configuration the water pump was moved from the left side of the engine (driven by a shaft extending from the back of the generator) to the front above the timing chain. When the flathead model was reintroduced it also received the new water pump. Equipped with such high quality parts as forged crankshafts and connecting rods, these engines earned a reputation for remarkable durability. The flathead, however, was prone to the typical flathead problem of overheating under sustained heavy load. This was from the hot exhaust traveling through the cylinder block to the exhaust manifold. American Motors introduced a die-cast aluminum block version of the OHV 195.6 cu in (unknown operator: u'strong' L) engine in 1961. It was produced through 1964. This engine used cast-iron cylinder liners and a cast-iron head.

  • Penske / Roy Woods Racing Trans Am Javelin Parts
Penske / Roy Woods Racing Trans Am Javelin Parts At the end of the 1969 race season, Roger Penske Racing accepted the challenge of turning the AMC Javelin into a successful race car for the 1970 Trans Am season. Despite persistent engine oiling issues, the Penske Racing Javelin finished second in the 1970 Trans Am series. In their second year of campaigning the Ford Boss 302, Bud Moore, with a driver team of Parnelli Jones and George Follmer, won the 1970 T/A Championship. When Penske and Donohue took on the challenge of racing the Javelin, they inherited the two Javelins raced in 1969 by Ronnie Kaplan Racing. Donohue determined that the 1969 cars were not race-worthy, so Penske Racing set about building three new Javelins. To make the Javelin race-worthy, many of the AMC parts had to be replaced with custom fabricated parts. It seems that no part was left untouched. The spare parts for the #1 Javelin arrived in California in the Shelby/RWR shipping containers. The parts included a full set of Koni shocks. All of the Koni shocks are date coded “1970”- just as they should be. However all four of the Koni shocks had been modified. Two of the shocks have had oil reservoirs welded onto the shock body. The other two shocks have fabricated top mounts. All four shocks have had a section of tube welded to the bottom to accommodate a spherical bearing. The photo below shows the Koni shocks as received. The four spare shocks, as well as the four Koni’s on the Javelin, have since been restored.

AN AMERICAN MOTORS HOME LIBRARY by Patrick R Foster For years I've collected AMC-related books and have accumulated a substantial library. As an aid to others in the hobby who may share an interest in books, I’ve compiled a list of AMC-related books, both in print and out. AMC hobbyists interested in reading more about their cars and the companies that built them will find useful information in these books. The books listed as 'Out Of Print' are generally no longer available through regular stores or catalogs, but can be found at flea markets, AMC swap meets, and through my used book service. The books listed as "In Print" are generally available at the time of this writing, although several have been on the market for a while and may be nearly sold out. • 1968 AMC Javelin
1968 AMC Javelin The Javelin was a production version of one of the AMC AMX prototypes shown during the 1966 AMX project nationwide tour. Intended to rival other pony cars such as the Ford Mustang and Chevrolet Camaro, it debuted in 1968. Available engines were a 232 cu in (3.8 L) straight-six and three V8s. With its standard engine, the Javelin cruised at 80 miles per hour (129 km/h), while the 290 cu in (4.8 L) V8 boosted top speed to 100 miles per hour (161 km/h). The optional "Go Package" included a four-barrel carbureted 343 cu in (5.6 L) V8, power front disc brakes, dual exhausts, and wide tires, that delivered the 60 miles per hour (97 km/h) dash in eight seconds and a top speed approaching 120 miles per hour (193 km/h). Also available was the SST trim level that provided a greater degree of luxury. In mid-1968 the AMX 390 cu in (6.4 L) engine was offered as a Javelin option. Its impressive 315 hp (235 kW; 319 PS) and 425 lb·ft (576 N·m) of torque could send the Javelin from zero-to-sixty (60 miles per hour (97 km/h). in the seven-second range. American Motors supported the AMX and Javelin with a "Group 19" range of dealer- installed performance accessories. These included a dual four-barrel cross-ram intake manifold, a high performance camshaft kit, needle-bearing roller rocker arms and dual- point ignition. PAGE 1 OF 2 Road & Track compared the Javelin favorably to its competitors on its introduction in 1968, describing the "big, heavy, super-powerful engine" as "an asset in such a small vehicle", and the styling as "pleasant." The car was longer and roomier than its competition (Ford Mustang, Chevrolet Camaro, and Plymouth Barracuda), and the Javelin's styling was arguably the cleanest of the lot.

  • Collection of Misfits
Volume 18 Issue 1 January 1, 2018 Collection of Misfits Richard Koop — What was he thinking! I started collecting cars in October 1980 and my first purchase was a ‘56 Mark II. I was fortunate enough to find a DSO (Dealer Special Order) car that had a unique all leather one- color roof liner, door panels and seats. It was originally ordered by a farmer and his wife in Iowa thru the Stivers Lincoln dealership in Des Moines, Iowa. The wife wanted a special color red leather to match the lipstick she used. Because of the special treatment, Lincoln wanted to show their affluent customers (Think Black Label Program-not Hormel bacon- today) they would do these special requests. A tube of lipstick was sent to Ford, and the Welcome to the leathers (Bridge of Weir) were dyed to match the lipstick. I remember taking the MK II to a Northstar News, the meet in Delroy, Ohio not much after I bought the car. I was trying to learn all I could about monthly publication of these cars and I met Jim Roll; who was probably one of the most knowledgeable leather and the Northstar Region upholstery guys I have ever met. He stopped by and asked what my plans were for the leather interior. It was showing some fading and a few minor cracks in the leather so I said I would of the Lincoln and probably re-dye and replace some of the leather sections. He looked at me and said …. Well, Continental Owners what he said I shouldn’t repeat, but he “expressed” displeasure with my plans.
