AMC straight-6 engine 1 AMC straight-6 engine The American Motors Corporation (AMC) straight-6 family of engines was used in AMC passenger cars and Jeep vehicles from 1964 through 2006. 195.6 American Motors' first straight-six engine was the 195.6 cu in (unknown operator: u'strong' L). It was produced from 1958 through 1965 in both overhead valve (OHV) and flathead (L-head) side-valve versions. Sometimes referred to as the 196 engine, this engine was originally designed by Nash in the 1930s as a flathead, and redesigned as an OHV engine in 1956. The flathead version was discontinued for 1956–1957, but reemerged in 1958 as the economy engine for the "new" Rambler American. When the engine was changed to an OHV configuration the water pump was moved from the left side of the engine (driven by a shaft extending from the back of the generator) to the front above the timing chain. When the flathead model was reintroduced it also received the new water pump. Equipped with such high quality parts as forged crankshafts and connecting rods, these engines earned a reputation for remarkable durability. The flathead, however, was prone to the typical flathead problem of overheating under sustained heavy load. This was from the hot exhaust traveling through the cylinder block to the exhaust manifold. American Motors introduced a die-cast aluminum block version of the OHV 195.6 cu in (unknown operator: u'strong' L) engine in 1961. It was produced through 1964. This engine used cast-iron cylinder liners and a cast-iron head.

  • Collection of Misfits
Volume 18 Issue 1 January 1, 2018 Collection of Misfits Richard Koop — What was he thinking! I started collecting cars in October 1980 and my first purchase was a ‘56 Mark II. I was fortunate enough to find a DSO (Dealer Special Order) car that had a unique all leather one- color roof liner, door panels and seats. It was originally ordered by a farmer and his wife in Iowa thru the Stivers Lincoln dealership in Des Moines, Iowa. The wife wanted a special color red leather to match the lipstick she used. Because of the special treatment, Lincoln wanted to show their affluent customers (Think Black Label Program-not Hormel bacon- today) they would do these special requests. A tube of lipstick was sent to Ford, and the Welcome to the leathers (Bridge of Weir) were dyed to match the lipstick. I remember taking the MK II to a Northstar News, the meet in Delroy, Ohio not much after I bought the car. I was trying to learn all I could about monthly publication of these cars and I met Jim Roll; who was probably one of the most knowledgeable leather and the Northstar Region upholstery guys I have ever met. He stopped by and asked what my plans were for the leather interior. It was showing some fading and a few minor cracks in the leather so I said I would of the Lincoln and probably re-dye and replace some of the leather sections. He looked at me and said …. Well, Continental Owners what he said I shouldn’t repeat, but he “expressed” displeasure with my plans.

  • When Transformation Fails: Twelve Case Studies in the American Automobile Industry
Journal of Enterprise Transformation, 5:71–112, 2015 Copyright C IIE, INCOSE ISSN: 1948-8289 print / 1948-8297 online DOI: 10.1080/19488289.2015.1019654 WHEN TRANSFORMATION FAILS: TWELVE CASE STUDIES IN THE AMERICAN AUTOMOBILE INDUSTRY Chen Liu,1 William B. Rouse,2 and Zhongyuan Yu1 1School of Systems and Enterprises, Stevens Institute of Technology, Babbio Center, Hoboken, NJ, USA 2Center for Complex Systems and Enterprises, Stevens Institute, Babbio Center, Hoboken, NJ, USA 2 The demise of 12 American automobile brands over the past century is discussed. Companies can respond to various difficulties by making decisions on their automobile offerings. These decisions are central to relationships between companies and consumers. These decisions included broadening their offerings to address a larger portion of the automobile market, narrowing their offerings to address the company’s financial situation, focusing on current offerings to keep them successful, or switching to other offerings to achieve greater profits. A case-based approach is used to explore the detailed nature of this range of attempts to change. Due to a variety of factors characterized in terms of four levels of explanation, these brands failed. Consequently, these companies’ attempts to transform via offering-related decisions failed. These failures reflect, to a great extent, inabilities to balance the tension between differentiated offerings and economies of scale or market demands. Keywords enterprise transformation; automobile industry; production costs; brand differentiation; globalization; case studies 1. INTRODUCTION Downloaded by [William Rouse] at 05:47 14 June 2015 Fundamental transformation of a large enterprise is very difficult. Recent data on the Fortune 500 reported in The Economist supports this assertion (Schumpeter, 2009).

CHEVROLETTER March 2021 Vol 2021 Issue 03.0 Director’s Report March 2021 Getting old really stinks…….I don’t suppose that comes as a surprise to many of our members. I am reminded of this fact often as I attempt to do things now that I have previously done in my younger days. Recently I noticed the brake lights were not working on my 1968 Corvette. I started diagnosing the problem hoping for a bad fuse or loose ground but no such luck. The next step was going under the dash to check the stoplight switch. For anyone who has worked under the dash of a Corvette you know that being a contortionist is of great value. At the age of 70, I no longer bend like I used to, require glasses to see what I am doing and get claustrophobic in confined spaces! To make this ordeal work, I removed the driver’s seat, door sill plate, steering wheel and disconnected the clutch pedal. After doing all of this I could see a bit of the switch….a one year only switch that is much harder to remove that the standard plunger style used in 1969! As of now, life took over…the snows came, the bedroom needed to be painted and the car still sits waiting for someone younger, more flexible with smaller hands to remove and replace the switch from hell. Car show and cruise nights are slowly starting to be announced as we enter the 2021 car season. The President’s council will be held soon and we will get a better view of the show season.
