Good morning! Good morning! My name is Clay Fees and I am working on a book project about cars from the ‘60s and ‘70s and I was wondering if you or your members might be interested in helping me out. The writing for my project is mostly done, and I am not searching for pictures of the cars I have written about. Naturally, I write at length and very positively of the AMC cars, specifically the Marlin, Javelin, AMX, SC/ and Rebel Machine. Some of these cars are hard to come by, and I prefer to use pictures of cars that are owned by “normal people” like myself (I have a 66 GTO and a 69 Road Runner) rather than using stock photos or pictures of museum pieces (though I have had to resort to that). If you or your club members are interested in helping, I need high resolution pictures of stock (or stock appearing) Javelins, AMXs, SC/Ramblers and Machines from 1968-72. I have good Marlin pics already. I would like to have shots from a front and rear corner, if possible. I’m most in need of ’69 Javelin, ’70 Javelin, ’71- ’72 Javelin/AMX, and Red/White/Blue Machine. (I’ve got a great guy in Houston providing me with some pics of solid color Machine) I would need the owner’s name, the photographer’s name, hometown and of course your club would be prominently mentioned with every picture as well as on a “special thanks” page. If you are interested, please email me at Clayfees@yahoo. com and I sure appreciate your time this morning. I sure look forward to hearing from you! Thank you! Clay Fees MAJ, JA State Family Program

Guest Editorial My Two Cents. By Dan Sweetland

Before I go spending my two cents, I guess I ought to tell you for the American Motors Cruisers Car Club of west Michigan a little about myself. I have always owned an AMC ever since that I have been a member of since the club started many years I bought my very first car. A 1974 Hornet Sportabout that ago. I also have been hosting an open to all vehicle car shows IU bought in 1980 while attending High School in Winslow, since 1988 for several different events over the years. Gary Timmerman

March 28, 1946 – December 13, 2017

Gary Timmerman, 71, of St. Louis, MO, passed away on December 13th, 2017. Gary was born in Baden, Missouri. He earned his Bachelor’s Degree at Southern Illinois University at Edwardsville.

Those who knew him remember how he was a big fan of the St. Louis Cardinals and could talk for hours about the team. Gary was on a bowling league for many years, and supported local softball teams and loved to have his yearly BBQ’s at St. Ferdinand Park.

Gary was the President of Gateway AMC Car Club for the last seventeen years. Gary loved to drive his silver ’73 Javelin/AMX around town to local car shows and events. His car hobby allowed him to make many new friends both locally and all over the country. Gary worked at McDonnell Douglas in the late 1960s on the early space shuttle design drafts. Later he worked for and eventually retired from Wise El Santo selling gloves and safety equipment to many companies around the world.

Most of all Gary will be remembered for his kindness and willingness to help others. A friend of Gary’s once said, “There was no such thing as a stranger, or a lack of goodness or humor to be found in any situation, in Gary’s world.”

Beloved father, grandfather, and great grandfather, Gary is survived by his two daughters, Kristina and Sherri and granddaughter Kayla and great granddaughter Scarlett.

Born in Atlanta on February 4th, 1947, George R. Doughtie, Jr. of Gainesville, GA passed away on January 1st, 2018 after an extended illness. A lifelong mechanic and BMW-certified technician, George retired from his independent shop in early 2017. By Harley Smith, Potomac Ramblers

The photo above has a sense of peace about it. It was captured during the Friday evening cruise through a portion of the Battle Field during a brief stop enroute to supper. The car occupants appear to have abandoned their fine cars to absorb some of the history that surrounded us in Gettysburg. They did return, however, to continue the journey characterized by a mix of emotions. Of course, riding amidst the caravan of the AMC cars that we love was exciting. But, for many of us, the surroundings and their significance and tragedy in the history of our nation were cause for serious reflection.

Looking at this photo several weeks after it was taken, gives cause for additional reflection for some of us. That additional reflection centers on the wonderful experience that many of us had in Gettysburg in Late June, 2017 and upon the efforts of so many of our fellow AMC and Rambler enthusiasts that brought this great experience to us.

On another occasion we made a point to name and acknowledge many people whose efforts provided us with the terrific opportunities for pleasurable memories through our AMO Meet in Gettysburg. Now we add just a few more words to express thanks and appreciation to the many people who made this event possible including Event Manager, Kirby England, and a host of Team Leaders and Volunteers that rose to the occasion.

AMO Treasury Sales

Treasury Sales is alive and doing well… as far as being prepared to sell and send items requested. Getting new items each year, and keeping everything else in stock as available.

However… there is the sales end of it, and it has been slow, to say the least. Currently stocking 59 different items in 6 categories. AMO Exclusive Items, including the Grill Badges (only item that is for members only), Hat Pins, Embroidered Patches, Oil Filter Stickers, and Clothing Items. Note Not All Clothing Items are in stock. Still quite a few sizes available, but when I do not have that size anymore, I get new items, then make them AMO ready! So may take an extra day or so, thanks for your patience!

Best thing to do to jump start AMO T/S for 2018 is for the next 2 months after issue there will be FREE SHIPPING! Many have wondered about the shipping charges. These are the minimum charge to send one item. When multiple items are ordered, combine all those postal rates and when ordered, almost always it just covers shipping costs. IF there is anything left over? We will return it.

Please share this with your chapter members and looking forward to seeing Every One in Auburn and other stops along the way. Events Calendar

Page 20 American Motoring Nov./Dec., 2017 Celebrating the 50th Anniversary of the 1967 Marlin 50th Anniversary Show June 23rd 2017 Gettysburg, Pa. June 23rd 2017 marked the final 50th Anniversary Show, this one for the 1967 Marlin. This show followed the same 50th celebration as the 65 show in Cleveland, Ohio and the 66 show in Rockford, Illinois. Our show was held in conjunction with the AMO National Show in Gettysburg, Pa. The club thanks everyone that brought out their Marlins to the show and a big thank you to AMO for allowing us to participate in conjunction with their show and helping to judge our Marlins at our show. A special thanks goes out to the Potomac Rambler Club for allowing us to have this show and working with us to make our show a success.

Friday started out on the damp side with a slight mist falling on the show field but one by one the Marlins started to show up, lining up in designated rows of 1965’s, 1966’s and the featured car, the 1967’s. By 9:00am the rain had stopped and, even though it was cloudy, the rest of the show was dry and very warm.

The show was open to all Marlins, not just Marlin Club members. On the day of the show, we had 19 Marlins on the show field, 7 featured 1967’s and seven 65’s and five 66’s, a total of 23 Marlin’s were registered for the show. Many of the Marlins at our 50th show also participated in the AMO National Show the following day.

Vince Geraci of the AMC design team was our special guest at the show. He met with many show participants, taking photographs with their cars and autographing parts. He met with show goers and talked about designing the Marlin and the discussions in AMC that drove the 1965 and 1966 Marlins to be built on the Classic and in 67 the Ambassador chassis. For this year’s event Vince made a sketch of the 67 Marlin on the Battlefield with a stone house and a Civil War statue in the background which was the theme of this year’s show.

Everyone that came had a great time at the show, talking Marlin’s, visiting with fellow Marlin owners and admirers, comparing cars and ideas. The Marlin Club gave away a number of door prizes, Goodie bags went to all owners along with a commemorative dash plaque. All the Marlins were judged, based on AMO judging guidelines by two Marlin owners that did not bring their cars. Trophies were presented by the Marlin Club for: Best 1965: Mark Zeno, Best 1966: Joe and Peggy Howard Best 1967: Chester Schmitt, Best of Show: Al Spoden, Spectators Choice: Ron Reviski, and Kid’s Choice: Steve Drucker.

American Motors to be a Featured Marque at Major Concours d ’Elegance

American Motors to be a featured marque at major Concours d’Elegance Hello my name is Marlin Hambrick and I’m the President of Ohio AMC. I wanted to take a minute to tell everyone who will be heading to the AMO national convention in Auburn Indiana about another event the following weekend. The next weekend July 6thand 7th Ohio AMC would like to invite everyone to take the short drive east to Columbus to participate in the 36th annual Arthritis Foundation show that last year had 1500+ cars. This year AMC will be the featured make. The last time AMC was featured was 2000 and that year we set a record for the most cars of any single make in the shows history. There were 130 AMC’s on the show field. This year with the AMO national convention being so close both in time and distance it would be an excellent opportunity for people to participate in both events. Friday night will be an all make car cruise with 125 6 foot trophies, Saturday will be a concours d’Elegance combined with the 37th annual AMO Richard A Teague Mid West Regional Meet. In between car shows the Ohio- Indiana area offers many attractions such as Kings Island theme park, the Air Force Museum, The Cincinnati Reds, and on July 3rd in downtown Columbus will be Red White and Boom one of the largest fireworks displays in the . Also a short drive southeast of Columbus is the unique scenic caves of Hocking Hills. We hope to see everyone at both shows. If anyone has any questions about the Ohio event you can contact me at 614-563-1330 or by Email at [email protected].

1. Reason for seeking this position: Like many of us, my passion for all things AMC began when I was 15 years old, and my father helped me save up $1000 to buy my first car, a 1969 Big Bad Blue AMX. From that point till today, this passion for the cars, history, and people that make up our AMC community has led me to serve AMO as membership director since 2016. I would like to continue this service as a voting member on the board of directors, to contribute to the future growth and preservation of our club.

2. Technical skills I can bring to the club include extensive computer and web experience, including database management, current Microsoft and Adobe software, and many years of editing, writing, and publishing documents and newsletters. I also have over 20 years of experience in accounting and budgeting for both small and medium sized businesses.

3. Administrative and Management skills: with an education centered around business management and marketing, I have enjoyed almost 30 years in providing customer service, management, and planning. I have been responsible for both operations and production for the past 16 years in a privately held printing and marketing company with over 45 employees.

4. Automotive: my love for AMC began at an early age as my first car was a 1969 BBB AMX, and I’ve been blessed to have a dad who instilled in me this love for cars. Since then I’ve owned several AMC vehicles, learning how to maintain these and teaching my kids the same things my dad taught me. I have extensive knowledge specially related to the Premier and AMC Eagle vehicles.

I have been part of the AMC hobby for 25 years. I’ll admit I married into the brand but I have fully embraced it! I am a founding member of the Hoosier AMC Club, an active chapter of AMO, started in 1994. I have served two terms on the AMO board of directors and most recently completed four years as the International Convention Director.

5. It is reasonable for you to want to be assured of an applicant’s true commitment to American Motors. I believe this is fair, so let me tell you about my AMC bona fides, and I invite you to form your own opinion on whether I am serious enough about American Motors to be worthy of this position. I am the creator and administrator of the Dick Teague fan page on Facebook. I created and sold several items for AMC fans including Turbocast II lug nuts, wooden AMC car puzzle toys, and fuel economy tips hang-tag reproductions. Thank you for your kind consideration! Ramble On, my friends!

As we do every year, Barb and I sit with great interest during the awards banquet at the annual convention – listening to the previous year’s winner of the John A. Conde Award as they prepare to announce their pick for the current year. There have been and are so many dedicated members who selflessly give of their time and energy for the hobby. Special people who have passed on like Don Loper who was the first recipient back in 1987. Don was a huge presence in AMO having been a founding member, Membership Director and Club Historian. Gary Zinman who was on the Board, produced the newsletter for years and was club Treasurer. Others, fortunately, are still with us today such as Jeff Kennedy, Frank DiCaprio, Darryl Salisbury, and Manny Angaretis who was last year’s recipient. You’ll note a majority of the recipients are members who have been involved in the actual running of AMO. However, that does not mean that others have any less passion for the hobby. Manny Angaretis is a fantastic example of a member who does not seek the spotlight but who gives selflessly of his time. As an example, at the meet in Auburn, IN, it had rained the night before the Concours Show and he was “caught” drying off cars in the parking lot! He even dried off our Hornet SC 360 which we do not show and is strictly a driver. For Barb and me to be chosen by a person of his ethics, dedication and quiet enthusiasm was a special honour! And to have our names included in those names listed above is special beyond words.

Finally, John A. Conde Award winners are not just members who are directly involved in the running of the club, although it certainly doesn’t hurt. They are people who are dedicated to our hobby and have the best interests of the club at heart. We are struggling right now to pick next year’s winner as we can think of many deserving members that have not already been recognized so by the time we see you in Indiana, we will have made our decision and will be very proud to present to the 2018 winner! Page 38 American Motoring Nov./Dec., 2017 Harley Smith Presented With Prestigious AMO Award As you may faintly recall, our club, The Potomac Ramblers co-hosted the National Convention of AMO this past June. As you may also recall, it required a profound amount of effort from many individuals over the course of a year, and particularly in the week before and week of the show!

An inspirational, essential driving force behind that effort was an individual who often can be described exactly that way in our club’s activities and in everyday life. Indeed, it was the guy who attended the prior year’s AMO convention in Rockford, IL, and let the cat out of the bag about our Gettysburg adventure, one Mr. Harley Smith.

The enormity of his contribution to the success of the event and the enjoyment of all its attendees did not go unnoticed by the AMO Plus chapter from Canada, which always brings a large contingent to the convention, and whose members play a major role in administering judging, awards, etc.

Thus, at the outset of the awards presentation part of the banquet, Gary Freelen of their club announced that they had reached unanimous decision to present their Glen MacDonald Award to our Harley Smith.

According to Gary, the award is named for the gentleman

who “started the drive within our club to host the AMO National event in Kingston for that year. Unfortunately, he passed away before the show. We like to acknowledge members of the host club that put out the extra effort to put on a show. We know that Harley was a big part of it, and there were a host of others who assisted with the show. As far as our club is concerned, Harley made an impression with us, so we gave it to him.”

Carol Smith is an essential part of the story, always there supporting her Harley and our club, seeing to the often tedious details with a welcoming smile.

Harley has served in various positions for the Potomac Ramblers, including President and Vice President of Publications. The fact of the matter is, Harley is the one most often who lights fires under peoples’ hindquarters putting together events and making sure they go off smoothly.

When you see Harley’s gorgeous bittersweet ‘70 390 AMX, you recognize his level of dedication to quality.

Congratulations, Harley! And congratulations also to everyone who lends a hand, volunteering time, effort, and expense to advance the cause of enjoying our fine American Motors automobiles.
