The Club will soon be painting Jackson’s fire hydrants white – I gather the participants know when. Irene Perbal-Boylson urges us all to bring visitors to the Club meeting. She suggests that former members may just be waiting for an invitation to re-join. In any case – bring a guest, and let her know when you’ve earned points. Tuesday 7:15am Plymouth: 49er RV Resort Frank Halvorson brought us up-to-date on happenings at the Hotel Leger in Moke Hill. A popular TV Wednesday 12:00 show undertakes to re-vamp decrepit hotels in a blitz fashion and then air the results. -

1953 Hudson Cars Described
1953 HUDSON CARS DESCRIBED 1953 HUDSON - GENERAL: A downsized Hudson arrived this year, called the Hudson Jet. It had styling that would be mimicked by the rest of the line in 1954. Gone was the Pacemaker. with its nameplate replaced by a new, lower level Wasp. The upper level Wasp, called the "Super Wasp," and it moved into the former Commodore 6 slot that now disappeared. The Hornet finally supplanted the Commodore 8 completely. The nameplate was retired, putting the 8-cylinder powerplant out to pasture. That L-head I-8, having served twenty long years from 1932 until 1952, was gone. The consolidation of lines and the removal of the Commodore Six and Eight allowed for less tooling in the Wasp-Hornet lines and should have saved money. The problem was that production kept dropping even though the cars were considered popular. The issue at hand was dated styling and the lack of an OHV V-8. At the root of the lower production was Hudson's lack of investment dollars when that trend to V8s and more modern styling was pulling the Big Three away from all other competition. Worse, a good deal the sales problems were the result of Hudson misreading their audience and thinking that these changes weren't needed. Even with the introduction of the Jet, production dropped. And Hudson's racing victories, that outshone all rivals, while earning respect for the brand, did not entice buyers into the showrooms. INNOVATIONS: The Hudson Jet, a smaller, more economical model, was introduced. It was an attempt to drop into the lower price market to pick up sales. -

This long-distance endurance rally car was stripped to a bare shell before being purpose built for the 2016 Peking to Paris Motor Challenge, a now famous endurance rally. There is no doubt that in the right hands, this is a potential rally winner. AMC (American Motor Corporation) was formed by the merger of Nash Kelvinator (as in fridges) and the Hudson Motor Co. in 1954 and soon competed with the big three despite being a much smaller company. Innovative engineering such as tandem master cylinders and manufacturing practices such as shared componentry helped the company compete along with the far-sighted purchase of Jeep. A largely unsuccessful merger with Renault followed the eventual absorption by the Chrysler Corporation which phased out the AMC brand by the late 1980s. The AMX was a mix of sports car and muscle car. Production ran for just three years from 1968 to 1970 and was unique in being the only steel constructed two seater car made in America at the time and voted ‘Best Engineered Car of the Year’ in 1969 and 1970 by the American Society of Automotive Engineers. Rally preparation includes a bespoke roll-cage which follows modern practice of reinforcing the bodyshell and suspension pick up points. -

With a bit of luck and better than expected sales for model year 1954, Hudson Motor now merged into American Motor with Nash was now setting up the outline of a fine new set of Motorcars. The New Hornet Sedan shown above made good use of the re-styled Step-Down bodies now with the most glass erea of any American cars of the period. The NEW 1955 sold well compare with other brands and allow AMC to it's new V-8 in the last production run of the 55 just before model year 1956 started, the cars above came equipped with the famous straight eight. Okay... the redesign of the 1956 still shows the age of the Step-Down (1948) but you gotta admit... it is a pretty acceptable concept for the period and... now equipped with awesome new V-EIGHTs, these babies where the vanguard of the only cars that could rivaled Chrysler products for the next 2 seasons... the 57 Hudson Hornets are hot... still today! The Hudon Italia is also in full production and sales have more than doubled that of the Chevrolet Corvette... The Hudson Jet was removed from the line-up at the end of model year 1954, and the assembly facilities where transfered to Rambler. Rambler and Nash filling the lower and mid-price ranges have also posted impressive gains and the whole line of senior Nash and Hudson cars will be sporting new design for the 1959 model year.. -

UAW LOCAL 154 COLLECTION Papers, 1933-1963 (Predominantly, 1933-1960) 7 linear feet 1 scrapbook Accession Number 128 L.C. Number The papers of UAW Local 154 Detroit, were placed in the Wayne State University Archives of Labor and Urban Affairs in 1963 by officials of the UAW and were opened for research in March 1979• UAW Local 154 was formed in 1936 to reoresent the workers of the Hudson Motor Car Company, Detroit. The officials and rank and file of Local 154 belonged to UAW Local 18312, affiliated with AFL, un- til July 1934. The local broke away from the AFL and for two years belonged to the Associated Automobile Workers of America. In July 1936 the local was reconstituted and designated UAW Local 154. UAW Local 154 represented Hudson Motor Car Company workers until 1955 when the company was merged with Nash-Kelvinator, forming American Motors Corporation. The entire manufacturing operation of Hudson Motor Car Company was moved to Kenosha and Milwaukee, Wisconsin after the merger and Local 154 represented workers of the Special Products Division of American Motors where some of the laid off Hudson employees found work. After 1955 the membership in Local 154 dropped rapidly and in its later years the local was chiefly representative of retirees of the defunct Hudson Motor Car Company. Local 154 ceased activities in 1963. The years 1933 through 1935 are particularly well covered in the correspondence series and the complete minute books from 1936 to 1957 provide important insights into the growth, de- velopment, and decline of Local 154. -
