Leaving behind her war-torn homeland, a young woman makes her way out of France just as the Nazi hordes begin their invasion. She finds herself in North Africa, doing a spell in Casablanca with her seven-year-old daughter in tow and unable to leave due her lack of a visa. Finally, miraculously, she ends up living the paragon of the American Dream as one of, if not the first female automotive designers, joining General Motors famed design staff in 1943 and then, in 1947, opening her own design studio and forming a successful partnership with Nash Motors. The remarkable story of Helene Rother is far from fictional, however, despite bordering on the fantastic. Born in Leipzig, Germany in 1908, Helene Rother seemed a born artist. While accounts vary as to whether she studied at the famed Bauhaus or Kunstgewerbeschule in Hamburg, one thing is indisputable: she had an eye for stylish design. Working with everything from furniture to jewelry, fashion to stained glass, she made a name for herself after having moved to Paris and embarking on a career within the city s high fashion market. Her timing, unfortunately, as hindsight shows, could not have been worse. By the end of the 1930s, it became clear that France was no longer what it once was. With the looming specter of Nazism casting a long shadow over the whole of Europe, Rother found herself fleeing with her daughter. By 1941, she had found her way to New York City. Here she put her artistic skills once more to good use, landing a job as an illustrator for Timely Publications (later, and certainly better known, as Marvel). Within a year, however, she found herself continuing west, landing in the automotive mecca of Detroit. She quickly took a job with General Motors, working for their interior styling staff where she was responsible for all manner of upholstery, fabric, lighting and hardware all more or less in her already-established wheelhouse. This being 1942 and Rother being a woman, however, her quick success did not sit well with many in the male - dominated industry/society. At the time, it was reported by that she was not only Detroit s first female automotive designer, but also collecting an unheard-of $600 per month (roughly $8,500 in today s money).

  • 1968 AMC AMX Rally Car PRICE £100,000
1968 AMC AMX Rally Car PRICE £100,000 ABOUT THIS CAR IDEAL FOR USE ON: Flying Scotsman, Himalayan Challenge, Trans America, Rally Round Africa, Paris to Amsterdam, The 4th Alpine Trial, Slartibartfast, Maharaja Marathon, Peking to Paris, Flight of the Condor Rally Preparation Services is pleased to offer this 1968 AMC AMX classic car for sale. This long-distance endurance rally car was stripped to a bare shell before being purpose built for the 2016 Peking to Paris Motor Challenge, a now famous endurance rally. There is no doubt that in the right hands, this is a potential rally winner. AMC (American Motor Corporation) was formed by the merger of Nash Kelvinator (as in fridges) and the Hudson Motor Co. in 1954 and soon competed with the big three despite being a much smaller company. Innovative engineering such as tandem master cylinders and manufacturing practices such as shared componentry helped the company compete along with the far-sighted purchase of Jeep. A largely unsuccessful merger with Renault followed the eventual absorption by the Chrysler Corporation which phased out the AMC brand by the late 1980s. The AMX was a mix of sports car and muscle car. Production ran for just three years from 1968 to 1970 and was unique in being the only steel constructed two seater car made in America at the time and voted ‘Best Engineered Car of the Year’ in 1969 and 1970 by the American Society of Automotive Engineers. Rally preparation includes a bespoke roll-cage which follows modern practice of reinforcing the bodyshell and suspension pick up points.

  • Jeep 2.5 Firing Order You Can Adjust Ignition Timing on Your Jeep Wrangler by Rotating the Distributor a Few Degrees
Jeep 2.5 firing order You can adjust ignition timing on your Jeep Wrangler by rotating the distributor a few degrees. This procedure is possible on the 4. Before starting, make sure you have the correct timing degree and RPMs at idle specified by the vehicle manufacturer. Timing your Jeep is best after you have driven the vehicle for about 20 minutes to make sure the engine has reached operating temperature. Park the car in a safe place and set the transmission to Park automatic or Neutral manual , apply the "Parking" brakes and turn off the engine. Locate the timing scale on the case cover above the crankcase pulley at the engine front end and the notch on the crankcase pulley or vibration dumper, right next to the timing scale. If they are hard to see, clean the scale plate and pulley. Then highlight the marks with white chalk or correction fluid. This wire is located on top of the valve cover. Also, unplug the vacuum hose at the distributor and plug the hose with a Phillips screwdriver of the appropriate size. Make sure the timing light wires are out of the way of moving parts. At all times, during this procedure, be aware of the rotating cooling fan so that you do not touch it by accident with your hands or a piece of equipment. Start the engine, increase the idle speed to rpm and adjust the idle to the number provided on the VECI label, following the procedure described in the same label. When ready, aim the timing light to the graduated scale on the front case cover and see what number on the scale the notch on the pulley points to.

Straight 6 engine jeep American Motors' first straight-six engine was the It was produced from through in both overhead valve OHV and flathead L-head side-valve versions. Sometimes referred to as the engine, this engine was originally designed by Nash and introduced in the Nash Ambassador model. It featured only four main bearings , unlike the 7-main-bearing flathead engine it replaced. It was a flathead design displacing It was redesigned as an OHV engine in The flathead version was discontinued for —, but reemerged in as the economy engine for the "new" Rambler American. When the engine was changed to an OHV configuration the water pump was moved from the left side of the engine driven by a shaft extending from the back of the generator to the front above the timing chain. When the flathead model was reintroduced it also received the new water pump. Equipped with such high quality parts as forged crankshafts and connecting rods , these engines earned a reputation for remarkable durability. The flathead, however, was prone to the typical flathead problem of overheating under sustained heavy load. This was from the hot exhaust traveling through the cylinder block to the exhaust manifold. American Motors introduced a die-cast aluminum block version of the OHV It was produced through The cylinder heads for the two types of block aluminum and cast iron are of similar design, but are not interchangeable. The OHV requires more periodic maintenance than newer-model engines. The head bolts must be re-torqued retightening process regularly. The cause of the headbolts loosening over time is believed to be thermal expansion and contraction of the head due to the rather heavy design.

UAW Local 154 represented Hudson Motor Car Company workers until 1955 when the company was merged with Nash-Kelvinator, forming American Motors Corporation. The entire manufacturing operation of Hudson Motor Car Company was moved to Kenosha and Milwaukee, Wisconsin after the merger and Local 154 represented workers of the Special Products Division of American Motors where some of the laid off Hudson employees found work. After 1955 the membership in Local 154 dropped rapidly and in its later years the local was chiefly representative of retirees of the defunct Hudson Motor Car Company. Local 154 ceased activities in 1963. The house at 1315 McKinley Avenue also displays a wraparound porch, spindle detailing, steep roof, fish scale wall shingles, and cut-away bay on the front elevation. An umbrage porch on the second floor and multi-level gables on the primary façade add to the asymmetrical character of the house. In general, these buildings have irregular footprints and roof forms. Hipped roofs with cross-gabled bays are common, as are hip-on-gable or jerkinhead details. Porch styles vary but typically extend across the full or partial length of the front elevation and wrap around the building corner.

  • Aircraft Designations and Popular Names
Chapter 1 Aircraft Designations and Popular Names Background on the Evolution of Aircraft Designations Aircraft model designation history is very complex. To fully understand the designations, it is important to know the factors that played a role in developing the different missions that aircraft have been called upon to perform. Technological changes affecting aircraft capabilities have resulted in corresponding changes in the operational capabilities and techniques employed by the aircraft. Prior to WWI, the Navy tried various schemes for designating aircraft. In the early period of naval aviation a system was developed to designate an aircraft’s mission. Different aircraft class designations evolved for the various types of missions performed by naval aircraft. This became known as the Aircraft Class Designation System. Numerous changes have been made to this system since the inception of naval aviation in 1911. While reading this section, various references will be made to the Aircraft Class Designation System, Designation of Aircraft, Model Designation of Naval Aircraft, Aircraft Designation System, and Model Designation of Military Aircraft. All of these references refer to the same system involved in designating aircraft classes. This system is then used to develop the specific designations assigned to each type of aircraft operated by the Navy. The F3F-4, TBF-1, AD-3, PBY-5A, A-4, A-6E, and F/A-18C are all examples of specific types of naval aircraft designations, which were developed from the Aircraft Class Designation System. Aircraft Class Designation System Early Period of Naval Aviation up to 1920 The uncertainties during the early period of naval aviation were reflected by the problems encountered in settling on a functional system for designating naval aircraft.
