A variety of qualitative data collection techniques were employed including document analysis, direct observation, interviews with staff, and focus group discussions with student participants. Through collection analysis, ethnographic content analysis and interview analysis, patterns in the literature and the responses received were extracted in an effort to construct and offer a 'holistic' view of the state of the literature and its influence, and suggest clear implications for its future development and use with children in and out of libraries throughout the region. ii For my grandmother Earline DuFour-Herbert (1917-2007), my eternal inspiration, and my daughter, Jasmine, my constant motivation. iii ACKNOWLEDGMENTS To adequately thank all of the wonderful people who have made the successful completion of this dissertation possible would require another dissertation-length document. -

VITUAL FIELD TRIPS – GEORGETOWN’S HISTORIC HOUSES Log Cabin This log cabin looks rather small and primitive to us today. But at the time it was built, it was really quite an advance for the gold‐seekers living in the area. The very first prospectors who arrived in the Georgetown region lived in tents. Then they built lean‐tos. Because of the Rocky Mountain's often harsh winters, the miners soon began to build cabins such as this one to protect themselves from the weather. Log cabin in Georgetown Photo: N/A More About This Topic Log cabins were a real advance for the miners. Still, few have survived into the 20th century. This cabin, which is on the banks of Clear Creek, is an exception. This cabin actually has several refinements. These include a second‐story, glass windows, and interior trim. Perhaps these things were the reasons this cabin has survived. It is not known exactly when the cabin was built. But clues suggest it was built before 1870. Historic Georgetown is now restoring the cabin. The Tucker‐Rutherford House James and Albert Tucker were brothers. They ran a grocery and mercantile business in Georgetown. It appears that they built this house in the 1870s or 1880s. Rather than living the house themselves, they rented it to miners and mill workers. Such workers usually moved more often than more well‐to‐do people. They also often rented the places where they lived. When this house was built, it had only two rooms. Another room was added in the 1890s. -

However, different makeup styles will result in significant facial appearance changes. It remains a challenging problem to match makeup and non-makeup face images. This paper proposes a learning from generation approach for makeup-invariant face verification by introduc- ing a bi-level adversarial network (BLAN). To alleviate the negative effects from makeup, we first generate non-makeup images from makeup ones, and then use the synthesized non- makeup images for further verification. Two adversarial net- works in BLAN are integrated in an end-to-end deep net- work, with the one on pixel level for reconstructing appeal- ing facial images and the other on feature level for preserv- ing identity information. Smith McMaster University – English & Cultural Studies ABSTRACT This dissertation draws upon literary and cultural studies, hip-hop studies, and hip-hop feminism to explore Black women’s critical engagement with the boundaries of Black womanhood in the cultural productions of street literature and hip-hop music. The term “troublesome” motivates my analysis as I argue that the works of writers Teri Woods and Sister Souljah and of rapper Lil’ Kim create narratives that alternately highlight, reproduce, and challenge racist, classist, and sexist discourse on Black womanhood. Such narratives reveal hip-hop to be a site for critical reflection on Black womanhood and offer context-specific examples of the intersectionality of hip-hop generation women’s experiences. This project also incorporates ethnographic methods to document and validate the experiential knowledge of street literature readers. -

THESIS JAMALODIN ADAM AHMED (Y1412.110008) Department of Political Science and International Relations Political Science and International Relations Program MAY 2016 I II III IV FOREWORD One of Africa’s main problem is political structure of the states, I was sure that my thesis would involve this problem and its solutions, but this idea changed on 23rd February 2015, when security officers took me for extra security checks at Jomo Kenyatta international airport. The officers said that it was because of al-Shabaab security threat, and I fit the profile of the al-Shabaab members a young Somali and a Muslim. The group’s activities has never affected me directly but for the first time I faced profiling in Kenya just because of my age, religion and tribe. After three minutes of frisking and questioning, I was allowed to proceed with my journey back to Turkey. The incident got me furious which drove me to do intense research on the al-Shabaab group which led me to making the decision to make it my thesis topic. As sensitive and complex the topic might be, the Islamic and Somali cultural background gave me the motivation needed to finish the thesis in the required time frame. The thesis’s aim was to prove al-Shabaab wrong in their claim that they are doing religious duty and in the process prove that Islam and other religions are against terrorism and I was glad that I did prove them wrong. -

TWO EVENTS – ONE APPLICATION! This year the Art Mart and Fine Art Exhibit are combined into one application. No more standing in different lines to drop off your entries if you participate in both! ART is located at Schooley Mill Barn, on the southern end of the village. This location provides plenty of space to display works and will be hung as it was last year with the Fine Art Exhibit in the upper part of the bank barn and Art Mart in the “L”. We are proud of the quality of the art that is offered at the Waterford Fair and expect the Schooley Mill Barn Exhibit to be a big hit with the Fair’s approximately 18,000 visitors! GENERAL INFORMATION Art Mart and Fine Art criteria differ. Please read the requirements carefully. ART MART: The Art Mart is not juried, but the application form must be complete. You must also do at least one volunteer shift if you participate in the Art Mart. There is no limit on the number of entries that may be submitted. Sales prices up to $450 will be accepted. The most popular price point with our fair-goers is less than $100, but do not let that hold you back from submitting your more expensive pieces. If you have participated in the Art Mart in the past you were assigned an “Artist Consignor’s Number” We will no longer be using numbers. All art will be tracked by the Artist’s last name. Accepted Media: Oil, acrylic, watercolor, pastels, charcoals, block print, pen and ink, pencil drawings, or collage. -
